    This is a nice tool for teachers to use. I know that I can definitely take a look at it for my own classroom. Learning definitely changes with the use of technology and how accessibly it can be for students to learn facts.

    I think this resource is very applicable to my classroom because one of my main goals to to have my students evaluate and create which is what a lot of the article discussed. Overall this is more for teacher use as it is discussing 21st century skills and what they look like. Also it comes from the Teacher PD source book. I shared an article that was very similar to this that covered 10 signs of a 21st century classroom.

    I really like the way that this article breaks down 21st Century learning and dispels the myth that 21st Century Learning is the same as learning with technology. I especially like the quote that you highlighted that states "Twenty-first-century learning means that students master content while producing, synthesizing, and evaluating information from a wide variety of subjects and sources with an understanding of and respect for diverse cultures." I think this is a useful article that helps us focus on what will truly help students become 21st Century thinkers, instead of just figuring out ways to have them do their work on the computer.

    I think this website is a great start when it comes to thinking about teaching 21st century skills. Before you can understand something, you must understand the definition of it. I think it is important to note that 21st century learning is not the same as teaching/learning with technology. This website would be especially useful for teachers, because they need to understand 21st century learning before they can teach it. Great article, thanks for sharing!

    I really enjoyed the article. Made me think back to a physics teacher who had us do all kinds of things. Map stars, go to the playground and work on centrifugal force. (Wont forget that one, made me sick) I do not teach at the elementary level but think there is validity in having them do these type of projects.

    Sarah I think this article is well written, and a lot of parents need to read this, long with teachers. I am not sure when our society switched over to make everyone a winner. Making everyone a winner is not reality, and as a teacher that is so frustrating. I think about the scientiests who have made dramatic breakthroughs in their careers, and I would love to know how many times they failed? I am sure it was more times than they have found success, but that makes the success that much better! I do agree that this article is going to be benefical for future classrooms. I take it into this: Students might not find the "right book" on the very first try, and that is ok. If they can't read it because it is too challaning, that is ok. They can try again. I think this is an article that both teachers and students need to read because teachers need to let students fail more and students need to know that it is OK to fail! Life is full of failures...but the failure does not define you, how you handle the failure does! As far as the last question, am I aware of any other resources similar, this question does not really apply. The article focuses on the concept of failure and challanging projects and that is ok so that students know how to respond the next time.

    great point about "When did everyone become winners?" Students need to struggle sometimes in order to fully understand the assignment, the concept, etc. It drives me crazy when a kid doesn't get something so they just want me to spoonfeed it to them.

    This is a great article that explains different ways to use social media in the classroom. One idea that I wanted to share, but it was not on there, was this idea about having a Twitter Debate. I heard about it in a webcast that I watched last week. I think this could also be a very effective tool for students who are trying to get their point across. They would have to find an article to support their point, and by using Twitter and limiting them to 140 characters, it would force them to make their point consice. I think this article could be helpful with teachers. Teachers can have a lot of different ideas to help students use social media in their classroom. I think that I could use different ideas for the library, specifically tweeting different things that are going on in the library.

    I really like the idea of connecting with other classrooms through social media. I think this could work for my writing classes as a very authentic way of getting an audience. Maybe "Share your journal entry on social media and see if you get responses from people other than me and the rest of the kids in this class"? Kids and teachers can take control over this and use it in so many ways: sharing their work, reaching out to other people and classes, connecting with each other outside of class, etc. Plus there are so many different platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest) that allow us to do a variety of things so that you don't have to stick with just one.     This was a great article that gave a lot of diverse ideas for using social media in the classroom. One that I found I could use in my class would be a discussion forum for students who are in different periods, but taking the same/similar class, to communicate with each other on a variety of discussion topics. It could also be applied to allow my engineering students to communicate with the physics classroom. I believe this resource would most benefit teachers, administration, and technology integrationalist. It would be a great way to introduce the idea of incorporation social media into the classroom at a PD meeting.

    This was very informative on how to use social media in the classroom in a fun and appropriate way. There are so many platforms for students to seek or gain information, and I find that some teachers are afraid of allowing their students into the social media world in a classroom setting. Also, I would state that those teachers have not themselves explored social media in an educational format. This could be a great resource for many teachers.

    I think this is an awesome resource to give teachers ideas of how to integrate social media in the classroom more effectively. Edutopia always has lots of great, reliable information and resources. One of the things that I think is the most effective is how this article has links to other sites where specific real life teachers have used social media in the classroom effectively.

    This is a nice resource for teachers to come and look at. I think that we often forgot how beneficial it is to read a whole class novel, and still allowing students to read the way they know how to read. I really think I can take a closer look at this article for future classroom purposes.

    This is an interesting article that I think is so important. I don't read novels with my classes as a CTE teacher, but we do read a lot of articles and sometimes I give students a time limit for reading them. Every time, some students zoom through and others don't even finish. I have found a couple great websites in the past that have adjusted reading levels of specific articles and that has been incredibly helpful for me. I do think that whole class reflection is important when reading the same text, as it gives different points of view and opens student's eyes to things they may not have realized.

    I definitely enjoyed this article. I liked reading novels as a whole group, but it was difficult if only half the class did the reading and the other half just messed around. A good resource for teachers to take a look at and consider. I agree that the reflection from all students is necessary, but that could be done without having to read the novel as a whole. If students don't read the book, it's on their own shoulders...

    This was very interesting to read. I agreed with many of the point made by the author and I think that this article can help me as I continue to work to engage students in reading. I read aloud a novel to my 6th classes for the to just enjoy listening to. We are also currently doing a whole class novel study of Holes. I agree with the author of the article that there is room for both whole class reading of a novel and choice time. I have my student independently read a book of their choice, and we have a set aside time a few times a week where everyone in the class reads. Currently my 7th grade Literature students are reading a novel of their choice and I am just requiring that they write reading response letters to me and it has been going very well. They are engaged in reading and able to read at their own pace. I gave them a deadline for when they need to have their books finished, but it is on them to decided how much to read each week. Choice and voice are very important. This is a great resource that I can share with teachers in my collaborative teacher team.

    Austin, I love classes that use Poll Everywhere! I think this is a great resource for my future classroom and would love to use it but I think I would need to adapt it depending on the grade level I teach. I believe Poll Everywhere is beneficial for student and teacher use because it promotes a safe classroom environment and student engagement. Teachers can use this resource as a formative assessment and feedback tool. On the flip side students will be able to use Poll Everywhere as a way to speak up in class when they may be too shy to do so in other ways.

    I loved using Poll Everywhere! I think this a great interactive tool for teachers to get students involved into the classroom activity! It's very easy and is very fun for students to use in the classroom!

    I used Poll Everywhere for the first time last semester and it was a great idea. It was a really fun time interacting with the teacher in that way. It was very easy to set up and even if you don't have a smart phone you can still text in your response. We answered questions ranging from single answers all the way to little short sentences. I would definitely use this tool if I ever became a teacher because it allows students to be on their phone and contribute at the same time, instead of just being on their phones.

    I feel like this would be a great tool if it's used in the right context. I don't necessarily think elementary would be the right place for it. For the students that actually have phones you don't know if the students have texting included in their plans. You might get them in trouble with their parents, hence you get in trouble for telling them to send a text. In older grades I could see this going over very well and I've seen it used in a college class before. It's a nice change of pace in that context.

    I actually used Poll Everywhere in my Level 1 Teaching Experience and loved it! The students got to see some results of our lessons, I got a quick formative assessment, and the data was nicely organized for graphing or applying to spreadsheets!

    Picasa is a great application by Google, it allows you to upload and edit photos. A great web 2.0 tool that could be implemented into an activity. I love using Picasa, since photography is one of my many hobbies!

    I love using Picasa! Every since I learned about it I use it for personal editing and professional editing! It's so easy to manipulate and very fun! I think that both students would love using this as an interactive tool in a class! I also think that it's fun and great for teachers to use as well!

    I've used Picasa before and it seemed simple enough to use. I think the upper elementary grades would definitely be capable of using this but I would maybe wonder if something like iPhoto would be a little easier for them to use? I've had a little better experience with that. If you were trying to get teachers to use the software I also think iPhoto might make them a little nervous about using photo editing programs. People tend to have good thoughts more often than not when they think of Apple.

    Erin this looks like a great website. Although I won't be able to use it in my classroom, I can definitely see how it would be beneficial for grade school and middle school teachers. I think this will be a great resource for both students and teachers, and is very interactive. The pictures just "pop" off the page and provides great educational opportunities for students.

    Erin this looks like a great site for students who want to learn about the ocean. When I visited it I noticed just how easy the site was to navigate. Super simple for people who might now be to tech savvy. Everything was laid out in an easy to read manner. The articles looked fun and full of information. If I ever became a teacher and we were learning about the ocean this would be a huge help, because the Smithsonian is one of the most prestigious organizations in the world. The Smithsonian has many different interactive website that deal with all different parts of our planet, and the ocean is just on small sliver of their knowledge.

    Wow, love the extensive lists and all of the ideas they have here. It helps to keep them all together on this site so I can remember where to look when I want to variety of ideas for something. Whenever I feel like I want to change up a lesson or add something "spicier" to it, I often turn to something-tech related, so now I can turn here. Thanks!     I love the part of this article that encourages educators to think of a lesson that needs some life and then to look at web 2.0 tools! Also there is a link that brings you to effective communication tools for web 2.0 that I found helpful. Definitely a great teacher tool so that they have a place to go to for ideas for sprucing up a lesson.     Nicole I really enjoyed watching the video on inquiry based learning. I liked the principals quote that "inquiry based learning is really just a fancy phrase for curiousity." I also liked the young man's quote about "inquiry based learning actually makes you think." Memorization is not allowing kids to explore or think for themselves. The teachers did a nice job of explaining how the students curiousity can help guide what they are learning, while still getting the common core standards mastered. I agree that the concept of inquiry based learning can be used effectively in the classroom. I think that it can be used effectively in my library because we provide resources to help students answer questions they wants to know about. I think that inquiry based learning is something both students and teachers can benifit from. Teachers will find it much easier to teacher if their students are engaged. Allowing students to choose what they are learning about will allow them to be more engaged. While I do not know of anything else that is similar to inquiry based learning, I think that it can be very helpful for students at all levels and I believe more teachers should take advantage of it.

    Nicole, I really enjoyed watching this video as well. When I first started watching the video, there was an opening sentence that just drew my attention right away into the video. The teacher said, "I realized how much more they learn, then when I see that they take action and their applying the skills they learn in here, I feel like I have done my job as a teacher." When I start to begin my teacher's journey, I hope to feel that overwhelming joy of teaching my students, not just viable information, but also how it can be applied to the real world settings. I also was excited to hear that all the coordinator said that group based learning is all about curiosity. Which I believe is what we as future or current teachers try to accomplish everyday that we are in the classroom. I agree that the resource can be used efficiently in my own future classroom because I hope to one day teach my students how they want to be taught material, as well as how to share that material with others around them. I believe that the resource is a use for both teachers and students. The reason why is because teachers can learn from their students developing ways, as well as how the student can teach their teacher how they can best develop and comprehend the material. I am currently not aware of any other similar resources that could be considered at this time, but I am confident that as our class continues on, there will be more resources.

    "Inquiry is a fancy term for curiosity". I could not agree more. This is such a motivational video to help us as educators encourage our students to dive further in exploring ideas. Curiosity leads to the ability to create strong, driving questions. I look forward to allowing my students to take charge of their learning by encouraging them to bring up real life questions that will allow them to dive into their inquiry and research. As teachers, we must learn to take a step back and allow the students to facilitate their own learning with strong question asking!

    Sir Ken Robinson is one of my favorite educational speakers. His Ted Talks are all amazing. I like this resource just for its usefulness in making people think. It would make a great tool for teachers to take to administrators who are reluctant to move towards a new teaching style or technology implementation. I am lucky enough to work with an administration that already thinks this way, but I know that there are some districts that do not see a need for a change in our education system. I also think that every parent and student also need to see this video. It is important to understand why your teachers are trying new things and teaching new skills. It helps when everyone is on board. Thanks for sharing this source!

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. I use this site in my math class when we are starting a new unit. My student preview video lessons on this site, and do some practice problems to prepare for the next unit.

    Khan Academy is for more than math? I never knew! I have used this before to help my ELLs in their math classes. I will have to check out the other options the website offers.

    We just looked at this the other day in our online class! I definitely think this would be a really beneficial as a supplemental resource. Although I wonder would it be worthy enough to use in a lesson or in a classroom? By this I mean is it mainly working through slides and problems? Does it benefit to problem-based learning as much? To me it seems to be mainly for student use in that the teacher doesn't do much in helping other than giving them the links for it.

    I definitely think that if I were to use this resource in my classroom, it would be supplemental to my lessons. If students were not understanding the content of the lesson, I would give them the link to the correct videos from this website and ask them to watch. I also could see myself asking students to get a username and log into the site to work on problems so that I could see their understanding of the concepts. I think this resource could be for both student and teacher use: the students watch the videos and work on the problems, the teachers see how students do on the problems and adjust their lessons as necessary. One thing I found interesting about this website is if you click "Test Prep," the only tests that are listed are SAT, MCAT, NCLEX-RN, GMAT, CAHSEE, IIT JEE, and... AP Art History (along with a couple of others that look to be in a different language than English). Why is AP Art History the only AP test included in the test prep?! I think this is an area that this website could expand upon, but don't get me wrong, I think this is a great resource. (In particular, the math videos and lessons of Khan Academy are very strong.)

    In high school I never would have thought that Twitter could be used as a resource in the classroom, but it mostly definitely can be. It's a great tool for both teachers and students as a sharing platform and connecting with others. I will use Twitter in my future classroom and hope that other teachers will be on board with the idea, too!

    I have experienced twitter use in the classroom numerous times through my experience during college. I think it is a great way to utilize social media in a safe way. Students can easily share information because they use twitter all the time. The resource deals mostly with teacher use, but the tool could be used with teachers and students. 3. There are many different social media tools that could be used with students. The important part is selecting tools that are appropriate for the audience.

    In reading this post, I felt like I was teaching my 7th grade math students. I don't know how many times I try to restate a something to get them to UNDERSTAND the problem. I think many students just want the quick and simple... how do I solve it. To them, it doesn't matter what or why they are doing something.

Shawn Cornally states that he "helps run a competency-based high school" so, based upon that, I'm sure that many of his posts deal with high school level material. However, as an educator, good is good, across the board. So, I'm excited to read about his ideas even though they may not directly pertain to my grade level. I think this could be a great resource for educators to gain new ideas within the teaching realm. You might also enjoy marvelousteachermusings.com.     I thought this was a great article! It gives wonderful advice on how to correct the mistakes that are made with iPads in schools. This would definitely be a great resource for teachers to use to gauge how they are using iPads within their own classrooms and to remember how to keep iPad use effective and meaningful. Great find! :)

    This is an excellent article to forward onto your administrators (as I just did!) so that they can understand the common pitfalls for technology use in the classroom. In my building, we have a classroom set of iPads that can be checked out and they have been used for all kinds of assignments and subject areas. As the kids will report, some teachers know how to use them effectively, and others are just using them for the sake of doing it. I've also read a couple of articles that I'll have to try and come back and link, but a few very large school districts have been in the news for the issues that they've been having with iPads in the classroom. The issue seemed to be that they scaled their programs way too quickly, did not train their educators properly, and did not look at the liability piece that comes along with giving students access to certain apps and features.

    Nicole, this is an awesome article. I like how it shows the 5 mistakes and ways to correct those. I think this article would be great for teachers as some are unaware of how to use iPads or how to use them for the right reason. I feel like if you have the right apps on the iPad for the correct age group they can be very educational. Personally, young kids are learning to work this and enjoy doing this. I had a boy I nannied he loved playing on the iPad at age 4! He was allowed to play educational games and have books read to him, etc.

    Nichol, I definitely agree with the things this article is saying! I think the fact the lack of Teacher Preparation in Classroom Management of iPads is a big one. How are we suppose to be incorporating this technology when we don't even know how to use it ourselves? Many people assume it works like a laptop when it does not. I definitely think this is an article teachers should read before trying to bring ipads into the classroom! Great article!

    With so many articles on 'what you should do' it's a nice change of pace to see 'what your doing wrong' kind of article. I went into it thinking it was going show how students are misusing ipads, so I especially liked how it was aimed towards educators telling them how they are going to misuse them. I see a lot of what we've read for class already in this article, it helps reinforce the lessons.

    I agree with this article and its must be obvious to anyone who has used an iPad why this information is important. The iPad is a tool and is effective for certain types of task. It's not a replacement for a computer. Due to the low cost and ease of operation the wow factor could cause someone to lose sight of the purpose of application. This article is more important for the designer of curriculum and the teacher who have input. One recently large lawsuit resulted from a one billion dollar purchase of iPad for a California school district.

    This article is tailored toward instructors and admin. of higher education organizations. I liked this article especially about using social media as a recruitment tool for higher education, an idea I have been toying with. I have already used social media by having students follow a Sonography Facebook page and a Sonography website with blogs. There are many resources on using social media, this is the first recruitment idea that I've seen.

    Thanks for sharing. I like the example of how the Italian teacher used Twitter to promote confidence in her students. Very cool! I think that social media is a great tool for both teachers and students, and I have been trying to use social media more in my own classroom. The tough part for me is that my students are in 6th grade, and I'm not sure that they are old enough to be using social media. Most of them have Instagram, but not Twitter or Facebook. I use Twitter and Facebook to reach out to parents who want to keep up with what's going on in my class, but my students want me to create an Instagram account! I'm trying to figure out how to make 2 Instagram accounts (one for professional use, one for personal use). I don't think I am able to do this, so I haven't reached out to my students via social media yet. Our form of "social media" has been Google Classroom.

    Interesting article. I totally agree with the importance of "branding." I know our school newspaper is working right now on rebranding itself to get more recognition, and social media is a big part of that. We try to have a strong presence on our yearbook's Twitter account so that we can build followers and get more kids involved. I also think that we as educators have great things going on in our classrooms and schools daily, and that a school that embraces social media has a leg up on being able to show themselves off! Our principal always says that kids and families "vote with their feet," meaning "Are they coming to our school or going to another school in town?" When we can show off the good things about our school on social media, I think that gives us an edge. :) Thanks!

    Mindmeister is a great resource for students! Graphic organizers are a powerful tool to help organize thinking. Mindmeister's ability to bring collaboration into the mix just makes it better, as well as being able to present. Works on multiple types of devices too, so good for everyone!

    I really like this software! When I think of Social Bookmarking I want to use it to help me find different tools that will benefit me in my classroom. I can think of a time where I am going to want a nice mind mapping software that you can collaborate with, and I know I will be able to come and look at this resource. I agree that this software could be used very effectively, especially because it does have the collaboration tool. I believe this tool could be used both for the teacher and also the student. I could see how easily I could use this website in my life, both when trying to explain things and also in group work. I am aware of different concept maps you can create online, but I believe this one looks user friendly and I would like to explore it even more!

    Hi Sara! This is a great article that I think will be helpful for what I've chosen for my final project for Dr. Z's class which I hope to utilize in my own classroom. The last point in the article was really relateable for me, especially with the global collab project we just completed. It is important to realize that in a project like this, not everything can be controlled. I also really enjoyed the point about asking your students if they are comfortable with it. I think that we all experienced some discomfort in our project, so making sure students of a younger age are okay talking to strangers would be incredibly important.

    I agree that this could be used in a classroom. This can be a good way to help students better understand a topic that they are learning at that time. I feel though it would be more for the teacher usage for a younger age. I feel that a global collaboration might be difficult for elementary students unless they work with anyone older than them in their district. Otherwise, I feel it would be a good experience for older students as well.
