    I believe this is a great resource because it assist in giving students and instructors high quality, low cost alternative solutions to increase their knowledge on a particular subject. This is a factor of self-leadership where the individual makes choices that can increase their ability to engage on topics in the classroom. This is of course only one choice in the plethora of available online learning resources. One alternative is the ROCC or Regional Online Collaborative Courses.

    Ping, in our last meeting you brought this to our attention. My stepdaughter is moving from Kazakhstan (KZ) to live with us in Iowa. She is a native Russian language speaker and has studied English. KZ has a K11 system. I hoped that she would be able to attend the 12th grade here in Iowa. This summer I discovered that if a student graduated from a foreign high school they are not entitled to FAPE. She graduated from the KZ system this past spring at 17 years old. Now that we know about these online K12 courses we have a new avenue of opportunity to help her prepare for college.

  • This paper examines university instructors’ beliefs and practices concerning interaction in advanced Spanish courses with heritage and non-heritage students.
  • As they begin to look for the appropriate Spanish class, Latino students may need to go through some kind of placement test or interview, especially if they have a low level of proficiency in Spanish. A growing number of universities may offer the opportunity for Latino students to take courses within a program for foreign language (FL) students, heritage learners (HL), bilingual students, Spanish Native Speakers (SNS), etc.

    I liked this site. It gives webcasts and web pages that you can look at. A great place to look for ideas if beginning the process of flipping. I have saved it to my library and plan to dig deeper into the many resources the author shared.

    This article is tailored toward instructors and admin. of higher education organizations. I liked this article especially about using social media as a recruitment tool for higher education, an idea I have been toying with. I have already used social media by having students follow a Sonography Facebook page and a Sonography website with blogs. There are many resources on using social media, this is the first recruitment idea that I've seen.

    I like how this article ties social media to communications and marketing. Although the purpose of using social media mediums can vary, all of the input from a particular user or organization equates to a summary state of the user's character and subsequently a marketing statement. This gives cause for further study about individual due diligence in making choices about how, why and what we put into social media.

    Thanks for sharing. I like the example of how the Italian teacher used Twitter to promote confidence in her students. Very cool! I think that social media is a great tool for both teachers and students, and I have been trying to use social media more in my own classroom. The tough part for me is that my students are in 6th grade, and I'm not sure that they are old enough to be using social media. Most of them have Instagram, but not Twitter or Facebook. I use Twitter and Facebook to reach out to parents who want to keep up with what's going on in my class, but my students want me to create an Instagram account! I'm trying to figure out how to make 2 Instagram accounts (one for professional use, one for personal use). I don't think I am able to do this, so I haven't reached out to my students via social media yet. Our form of "social media" has been Google Classroom.

    Interesting article. I totally agree with the importance of "branding." I know our school newspaper is working right now on rebranding itself to get more recognition, and social media is a big part of that. We try to have a strong presence on our yearbook's Twitter account so that we can build followers and get more kids involved. I also think that we as educators have great things going on in our classrooms and schools daily, and that a school that embraces social media has a leg up on being able to show themselves off! Our principal always says that kids and families "vote with their feet," meaning "Are they coming to our school or going to another school in town?" When we can show off the good things about our school on social media, I think that gives us an edge. :) Thanks!

  • To begin with, I don’t lecture. My students don’t take notes, at least not in the traditional sense, and we don’t read a novel and simply answer the questions.
  • It also means my students don’t acquire knowledge just for the sake of acquiring it. They need to do something with it — that’s where “project-based” comes into play.

    I found this post very interesting. It is easy to see how PBL may work in a science or math classroom, but I have always wondered how it would look for English. It seems like this teacher has truly grasped PBL, and her students are enjoying the learning process. I think this resource could be utilized by any teacher who instructs about English content, but depending on the age of the learners, the students may not reach full autonomy as those in this article did. I particularly enjoyed one quote from the teacher, "Finally technology is embedded into the structure of all we do... It's never an accessory tacked on at the end." As we have learned about in other EdTech courses, technology needs to truly transform the learning experience. I believe the teacher is doing that in this classroom.

    This Blog is one that I have bookmarked and will coming back to. This teacher's description of her class is how I want to work to make my class to look like. She had her premise but she had been able to create a class based on inquiry, openness and trust. This empowers students to create a social media campaign, create their own curriculum, and at the same time become more advanced in the content. Ms. Barseghian, I'm gushing, but your class sounds inspirational and worth the gushing.

    Some very good points for the teacher to consider when implementing and blended learning environment. I am still researching the idea of blended learning in my higher education classes, but have saved this with some of the other articles I have. I shared an article called "7 Things You Should Know About the Flipped Classroom" It too has some good ideas.

    This website has great points on blended learning. Blended learning, when done effectively, is very beneficial for the teacher and student. Teachers are able to differentiate their teaching and students are able to pause/review videos and receive extra help during the class period. Another similar resource I found was also on Edutopia.   • Imagine a world where resources were limited to what was found in the classroom or the school closet known as the "Curriculum Materials Room." Picture a world where students wrote letters with pen and paper to communicate with other students and adults outside of the building. Due to postage costs, the teacher either sent the letters in bulk or paid for stamps out of his or her own pocket. Can you recall a time when student interests like skateboarding or video were never used as part of learning curriculum because the tools needed were either too expensive or not yet conceptualized? Do you remember a time when non-traditional learners struggled, and absenteeism meant a high likelihood of students doing poorly in school, and possibly having to retake the course?

    Social media can enhance differentiated instruction if the tools are selected with a careful eye on individual students' readiness, interests, and learning profiles. In my classroom, I plan to try out "Kaizena" which is introduced on this website. I will use "Kaizena" to give feedback to my students' writing pieces.

    Katie, I agree that this resource can be used efficiently for other teachers future classrooms, just maybe not my own. The reason why it would not be efficient for my future classroom is because my specific area of teaching is more towards the sciences, and my the language arts. But I did love how there were multiple different websites that were available for further information and valuable resources for teachers. I also enjoyed how there were different topics to choose from such as websites, learning resources, articles and advice, teaching resources, reference, communities & blogs, and many other related posts. This website seems to be just for teachers, especially with other the different resources that are right at the fingertips for any language art or foreign language art teacher. Especially since the resource seems to be just for the english subject or even the foreign language arts course. There were also many different tools, printables, and as they say other great stuff for ELL educators are all available. I am not aware of any other similar resources to be considered, especially since I wasn't interested in looking for ELL websites. But overall, an excellent resource.

    Katie, this is an awesome list of resources! I think so often that teachers neglect ELL learners, especially if they aren't ELL teachers. I was just talking with one of my TESOL friends this last weekend and we both agreed that classroom teachers need to be more accommodating to their ELL students.

    YAY TESOL. I love seeing other teachers post about TESOL because every teacher is going to encounter ELL students in their teaching career. This is a great list of resources! I have used many of them and know that having them all in one place is extremely helpful. Since this is my future, I would definitely use this website to keep track of resources. It is for teacher use. Most ELL students would have difficulties navigating through these resources and understanding why they would be useful until a teacher helped them understand why. There are many lists on the internet for ESL help, but most have a lot of dead links. From what I looked at, this list looked very helpful!

  • Our goal should be to find a tool that allows students to interact in an open-ended and creative way about topics of interest and relevance to them.
  • The parameters of the interaction need to be established ahead of time by the teacher as well as the expected level of participation and interaction of the students. As engaged as your students might be in the activity, there is no escaping that this is a course assignment or requirement which may hinder open communication and could dampen some enthusiasm
  • In a K–12 setting, it is a good idea to get your principal’s permission before using social media with your classes in any capacity. For minors, it also makes sense to get permission from your students’ parents. They want to know what you are doing in class and, for the most part, will be as excited as the students.

If you are not as technologically adept as you would like to be, remember your students’ experiences learning language in your class. It is only through practice, and trial and error, that you gain technological proficiency.

    My friends got me into minecraft, and it is an impressive game. I like how the article doesn't just focus on using it like an art tool like I've seen other articles, but how it can teach different skills. Of course, minecraft doesn't follow the same rules as the real world such as physics. So its real job is to just get kids interested from a young age and perhaps learn more about how they really work. Another way I've seen minecraft used educationally is to introduce kids to working cooperatively on a joint server. So they know how to behave online and solve problems diplomatically.
