How can hotels' water conservation help the Global Goals? | Green Hotelier - 2 views

  • The International Tourism Partnership is working with its hotel group members to address water as a critical issue for the industry, and find ways to work together towards Global Goal 6: clean water and sanitation.
  • For hotels however water scarcity is increasingly common and therefore vital for them to address. As more countries, and cities, experience the effects of high population pressure and less available freshwater, the interest among policy-makers, businesses, and citizens grows. We need to become more efficient water users. We need to make some drastic changes.
  • These words are essential for hoteliers to take to heart as they consider greywater systems or ground water collection as part of the arsenal of water-saving practices they have at their fingertips. All hoteliers need to be thinking far beyond linen re-use programmes, and as guests in some countries typically use ten times or more the amount of water daily than is typical for local people, we also need to look at education and communication to customers.
  •
As World Water Week has come to a close, experts have discussed a number of issues regarding water and waste. With major climate initiatives such as the agreements established in Paris, individuals and industry alike have been called to action in order to mitigate negative climate change. Water use is one of the key resources that must be preserved. Hotels are major consumers of water, from guest consumption to laundry to F&B, water use is rampant in hotels. Water scarcity would be utterly detrimental to the hospitality industry. For this reason, greywater systems and ground water collection are but a few of the water-saving methods at the disposal of the hospitality industry. This is especially important because it has been found that hotel guests in some countries use ten times as much water as the local populace.

One of the smart things about the evolution of the GDS is that designers keep the end user (the traveler) in mind and continue to make sure the systems are user friendly and provide assurances to the traveler. This is significant to remember because there are several GDSs out there performing similar functions so, designing customer friendly systems become competitive advantage.

The reason I was attracted to this article was that the authors provide an interesting history lesson about the role of the travel agent before the advent of modern-day GDSs, including online travel websites, including Travelocity and Expedia.
  • travel agents spent up to 80% of their time doing things that prepared them for making reservations, and only 20% actually making them. But, due to the commission that tourism providers and travel agents relied on, only the 20% generated revenue.

Important to note that although this article is specifically written about the airline industry, the entire concept relates directly to the GDS of the lodging industry.

These systems tend to attract younger users - is this a missed opportunity to attract older users or are businesses intentionally ignoring older travelers who may still depend on more traditional travel agent services?

Costs to use these systems are high but the ROI may be higher than traditional methods because, used correctly, these systems market and sell themselves.

Why hotels are getting on board with sustainable development - JLL Real Views - 1 views

  •
This article touches on the reasons the hospitality industry has enveloped into the trend of "sustainability". As "going green" catches on and becomes mainstream, hotels feel the pressure as a result due to the high energy and water consumption rates of the industry. Hospitality is a competitive marketplace and it has a social responsibility to the environment. Hand in hand with "going green" is the initiative of also helping those in need. Many hotels are now donating food that would otherwise go to waste and growing their own herbs with the intention of employing locals to oversee the operations.

Naples Grande Beach Resort (a personal competitor for my property) has upgrades its PBX system and chosen Cloud5, a cloud based system that allows for on-going integration that does not degrade over time. As stated in the article, "With Cloud5's hosted solution, our systems are always current with the latest software functionality, without the need to purchase future expensive upgrades or interrupt hotel operations. We're always operating with the most advanced features that allow us to deliver fast, reliable guest service across our expansive resort. This upgrade has even reduced monthly telecommunications expenses which adds value directly to our bottom-line.". This very statement intrigued me as I recall when my property transitioned to HotSOS for our PBX software. Like most other softwares, integration with Opera our rooms system was a challenge and it was not without hiccup and initial challenges. Because it is not cloud based, the property does need to purchase upgrades and re-install in individual areas throughout the property. Our Sales team does however, work off an internet based software - Salesforce - and it allows not only for easier and seamless integration, but it also allows us to access it from home. It will be interesting to see how Cloud5 changes the guest experience for those at Naples Grande and how many other companies will begin moving towards this format of system.

Any guest at a participating SPG hotel can Make a Green Choice by forgoing full housekeeping for up to three days in a row (excluding their check-out day). For each night a guest opts into MAGC, they receive 250-500 Starpoints or a $5/5โ‚ฌ Food & Beverage voucher, while helping to reduce the use of water, energy and chemicals. Sustainability strategies are being imposed in hotel chains and one program that I am familiar with is the MAGC in which starwood properties participated in. They have the guidelins to be on brand with these sustainability programs which is both beneficial to our guests loyalty and help sustain on what is left in nature. It has been shown in this topic the different programs that involves every department. The MAGC being introduced or offered to guests upon check-in is a good way to let our guests know that we truly cares and value our environment. And email receipt is also recommended. The SMP is for company or meeting planners with the recommendation of going paperless and go digital and still be efficient and effective. This is also to prevent the property and participants in making unnecessary wastes.

" "Google Trends indicates a steady increase for the search term "Virtual Reality" over the past 5 years, with a notable spike occurring during 2016 (Google Trends, n.d.)" "With the introduction of VR, however, existing roller coasters and their infrastructure can be revitalised at a fraction of the cost of a complete rebuild by introducing a digital experience overlay (Louw, 2017a:135)" "Naturally, future work could include gaining a better understanding of how VR additions to existing roller coasters affect park visitor numbers with prior studies having indicated positive results of introducing new attractions lasting up to 2 years (Cornelis, 2010)."

  • Wyndham first began its digital transformation journey in 2016, which has since resulted in a shift to best-in-class, cloud-based property management systems, a single central reservation system for all 20 brands, and a flexible cloud service and sales platform.
  •
Wyndham Hotels & Resorts announced the roll out of the Oracle Hospitality OPERA Cloud Property Management (PMS), which will reduce the need for onsite hardware with special installation and provide operational enhancements that will be beneficial for guests, such as higher performance, security and reliability. One of the key features described is the mobile computing aspect of it, which gives operators the ability to run the hotel from anywhere, meaning team members do not need to be stationed at a desk to serve guests. The cloud-based system is designed to operate in more than 200 countries and can integrate with thousands of partners to create personalized opportunities for guests. This follows a series of shifts to other cloud-based systems which started in 2016 in an effort to demonstrate a progressive approach to digital transformation to give their hotel owners a strategic advantage over the competition.

I was shocked to read this article. I have worked with Wyndham and with Opera for many years and I was not expecting them to change to a different PMS system. I believe this might be a good move from Wyndham because private owners could reduce expenses by not having to pay royalties to Opera but at the same time, this is a new system that is somewhat new to the franchise. Great post I really enjoyed this article.

Soaring e-waste affects the health of millions of children, WHO warns - 0 views

Children are often engaged by parents or caregivers in e-waste recycling because their small hands are more dexterous than those of adults. Other children live, go to school and play near e-waste recycling centres where high levels of toxic chemicals, mostly lead and mercury, can damage their intellectual abilities

Cloud Storage Security: How Secure is Your Data in The Cloud? - 0 views

  • Hybrid Cloud: Many companies choose to keep high-volume files on the public cloud and sensitive data on a private cloud. This hybrid approach strikes a balance between affordability and customization.
  • Intrusion Detection: Online secure storage can serve many users at the same time. Successful cloud security systems rely on identifying when someone tries to break into the system. Multiple levels of detection ensure cloud vendors can even stop intruders who break past the networkโ€™s initial defenses.

  • โ€œFinding the right suppliers to maintain your facilities can be difficult and time-consuming. From janitorial services, to groundskeeping and maintenance supplies, ensuring suppliers are providing apples-to-apples quotes, developing contracts with clear service levels, and validating that supplier quality
  • โ€œBoilers today can reach efficiencies of up to 96 percent using condensing technology; however, a typical building, including new buildings, uses atmospheric type boilers which, for all intents and purposes, are only slightly more advanced than a science lab Bunsen burner. This technology is reliable and it works, but it is expensive to operate
  • An energy audit systematically identifies and develops opportunities to help reduce energy use in an institutional or commercial facility and, as a result, decrease building operating costs. Focusing the audit is imperative for maintenance and engineering managers.
  • โ€œCommercial kitchens are high energy users, consuming roughly 2.5 times more energy per square foot than any other commercial space, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  Of that, as little as 40% is used in the preparation and storage of food, says the UKโ€™s Carbon Trust; much of the wasted energy is dispersed into the kitchen.
  • All commercial buildings are insulated; building codes make it mandatory to insulate up to  a certain level. Unfortunately, because most buildings are put up under strict guidance to budgets, they are usually put up with only the minimal amount of insulation
  • Develop performance measures for your PM process with an emphasis on measuring the amount of PM that is work completed compared to all other work. Total PM hours should be the highest percentage of all the departmentโ€™s maintenance work. This goal might seem impossible, but over time, it is very achievable
  • โ€œPreventative maintenance is all about planning, plain and simple. Every piece of equipment or machinery at your disposal or under your care should have a schedule of what type of maintenance it requires and when it requires that check-up.
  • โ€œFailure modes are defined as โ€œhow something fails.โ€ Letโ€™s use a flat/membrane roof to show an example of what a failure mode is. On a flat/membrane roof, one failure mode may be โ€œpenetration of roof membrane,โ€ and the causes of this failure mode could be many. Knowing the failure mode(s) of a specific maintainable item such as a membrane roof and its causes can be key to early detection of roof failure (not meeting the intent of the end user) so the repair can be made before it affects an operatio
  • โ€œCatch small problems now before they become big ones. Addressing small details can add up to huge improvements in appearance and functionality. Ask your facilities services provider, janitorial company

  • Greasing the rack and pinion of a beam saw, for instance, can cause grease and saw dust to solidify inside the gears over time, eventually preventing them from moving. If youโ€™re unsure which tasks are beneficial to each piece of equipment, ask your equipment representative.โ€
  • Having spare parts and supplies around the time of a major preventive maintenance schedule is absolutely critical. Asset management software allows you to check the availability of the spare parts for dates when the work orders are due. This report can help you identify parts that are insufficient for the required work orders in the future. If you know which parts you are falling short on, you can order them in advance from suppliers rather than waiting till re-order limits are reached
  • โ€œAppropriate repetition and reinforcement are necessary. The average person is bombarded with more than 300 messages while at work, and multiples of that outside of work, Finney says. Getting a message to land with an audience might take as many as 12 repetitions, in some cases, he says
  • Letโ€™s get together: when youโ€™re designing your facilities, design social spaces for your employees. These might be lunch or break rooms, games rooms, gyms, or even community gardens.
  • While other managers may work to manage clients or staff, your job is to manage facilities and all that occurs in them. Your corporationโ€™s physical assets are just as important as your human resources, and you are the expert in this field. Whether itโ€™s collating data or contributing to the organizationโ€™s bottom line, your input is a valuable part of corporate decision-making
  •  โ€œWorkplace inclusion has to be clearly defined before any initiatives can be pushed forward. One useful definition of an inclusive office is a workplace in which all staff are treated with respect and have equal access to resources and opportunities. Facility managers should build on this high-level description to create an idea of what concepts like equal access, diversity and fairness look like in their own facilities
  • Space costs money. Knowing that we are moving towards a working environment consisting of virtual or mobile workers, investing time in developing new workplace designs that can suit these new ways of working while increasing space utilization rates can result in impressive cost savings
  • Performing facility maintenance and engineering tasks is like sailing among icebergs. What technicians canโ€™t see will sink them โ€” or their facilities. Thermal imaging technology gives technicians the ability to see the unseen, making it easier to spot failing motors and electrical components,
  • This concept is broadly used to describe our attempt to formally identify in-house talent in many of our labor shops. We identify talent through a competitive selection process based on potential vs. skills and promote our selected personnel to the worker and helper level while training them to achieve appropriate full mechanic level with associated certifications/licenses

Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, Apple, and others hacked in unprecedented Twitter a... - 0 views

  • The Twitter accounts of major companies and individuals have been compromised in one of the most widespread and confounding hacks the platform has ever seen, all in service of promoting a bitcoin scam that appears to be earning its creator quite a bit of money.
  • Shortly after the initial wave of tweets from Gates and Muskโ€™s accounts, the accounts of Apple, Uber, former President Barack Obama, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, hip-hop mogul Kanye West, and former New York City mayor and billionaire Mike Bloomberg, among others, were also compromised and began promoting the scam.
  • Itโ€™s unclear how widespread the operation is, but it appears to be affecting numerous major companies and extremely high-profile individuals. That suggests someone, or a group, has either found a severe security loophole in Twitterโ€™s login process or third-party app or that the perpetrator has somehow gained access to a Twitter employeeโ€™s admin privileges.
