    • Joe Cilli

I'm not sure if this is a legitimate news article. The page that is reporting it is littered with blocked URL's, there is no mention of actual hotels effected, and the one company mentioned (Trustee) has no reference to this on their site.
  •
Identity theft in hotels is now running wild in the black market. The hotel trojan is being sold in the underground for $280 dollars. Its bad enough these cruel people have the conscious to commit the crime themselves but then to pass along the tools so others can indulge in the caos is just wrong. The program takes screenshots from point of sale applications as credit card and other personal information is being uploaded. Its scary to say that your personal identity isn't even safe when you are booking a hotel room as a walk in guest, word to the wise use your phone to check in the next time you find yourself needing a hotel room with out a reservation.
  •
This is a pretty scary situation however identity theft has become more amplified with the inclusion of the Internet in hotel and business industries.

The Mobile Proximity Marketing Advantages and Disadvantages Retailers Must Know - Shopkick Insights Blog | Partners - 2 views

  •
This article was a huge help during my additional research on proximity marketing. The article sums up some pros and cons of the software. I think it did a thorough job on explaining some of the points and definitely peaked my interest to do more research. Proximity Marketing seems cool but at the same time it makes me nervous. As consumers we literally don't get a break to simply just function and be normal. This is our new normal, technology overkill that is supposed to help us and make things easier but at times can seem intrusive.
  •
While reading this article, I found that the statistic pertaining to the notion that 82% mobile market penetration will be anticipated by 2020 in the United States is quite significant. Considering that there is an estimated 40 million messages per year, proximity marketing does indeed sound captivating. Thanks to geolocation tags, they can properly attract consumers such as in the article's example of Macy's with Black Friday. Do you think this type of proximity marketing is attractive to all types of consumers? In my personal opinion, there are certain locations which do not specifically mean that the user wants to be bombarded by messages. For instance, an individual may go to a business meeting in Madison Avenue in New York, and due to the geolocations she may receive messages pertaining to nearby sales. However, these may become a bit too intrusive at times.

An introduction to building management system vulnerabilities - 1 views

  •
In December 2018, the FBI warned that unpatched devices on networks were exposed to hackers through an open port used to communicate with control systems.
  • ...4 more comments...
  •
Target stores attack in 2013. Criminals gained access to Target's point-of-sale (POS) system software to obtain the credit and debit card data associated with over 110 million accounts. However, the criminals did not directly attack the POS, but instead began stealing login credentials used by Target's heating, ventilation and air conditioning vendor when they connected to the Target web applications. Through this vector, the attackers gained access to Target's Active Directory and, ultimately, the Target POS system where they could collect credit card numbers and other sensitive data.
  •
In another example from 2014, a hacker broke into the building control system of a five-star hotel in Shenzhen, China, to manipulate room control systems and steal customer data.
  •
The four key modules of a building management system include management, automation, field devices and communications. The management level includes the human-machine interface, enterprise software, workstations, servers and, sometimes, network switches. Automation is the primary control for field devices.
  •
Another common BMS vulnerability is ineffectively controlled remote access to systems. The Target hack demonstrated how remote access, if it is not rigidly controlled, can be used against customers.
  •
One last, often-overlooked vulnerability is an aging BMS. Many buildings still have legacy BMSes installed that could be subject to simple attacks, although some of the older systems are analog-based and are not as easy to hack as modern, Ethernet-based systems. Regardless, the old systems may have default passwords that can be found on the internet and that cannot be changed or patched. These old systems may also have open ports that cannot be blocked unless you install a major -- and expensive -- upgrade or retrofit.
  •
Building management system is an intelligent microprocessor-based controller network installed to monitor and control a building's technical systems and services. they can be directly integrated with a broad range of building services, including access control, security, power, lighting, fire systems, elevator and escalator controls, smart whiteboards, and clinical systems. Hackers are becoming more savvy to BMSes. As a resullt, businesses must spend time and resources to patch any vulnerabilities.

  • mPOS systems, and especially tablet-based systems, are breaking into the restaurant scene because they offer a compact, flexible, and powerful solution to waitstaff. First, most waitstaff will be familiar with tablet or smartphone-based systems because the technology is so prevalent in society today. Familiarity means easier and faster training; waitstaff can be trained to use a mobile POS system in a fraction of the time it would take for them to be trained on any traditional POS system.

How to Prevent Malware Attacks and Promote Cybersecurity at Your Hotel - 0 views

  • Each time a hotel’s guest records get breached, the property is burdened with financial strain and faces broken trust with guests. As a hotelier, you don’t need to be an expert in cybersecurity, but you absolutely need to understand the basics to protect your business and your guests.
  • hotels process lots of transactions and store tons of guest data. A hacker can simultaneously target a property’s point-of-sale and property management system to capture payment card information as well as personal data, like passport numbers and email addresses.
  • Research from Symantec, a cybersecurity firm, found that more than 65% of hotels are routinely leaking booking reference codes through third-party sites. Why is this important? Because the information shared through these codes would allow a bad actor to login to a reservation, view personal details, and even cancel a booking altogether. When this happens, your guest information is vulnerable and you risk destroying the guest relationship.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) not only helps to ensure that data security software, hardware, and practices are safer, but also helps to protect against fines and penalties when a breach occurs,
  • The right technology is only half the equation; over the years, security experts have also identified employees as part of the problem. Hotels must train their staff to handle personal information security, comply with privacy policies, and change user access credentials regularly.
  • Even with a great PMS/POS system and the right training, it’s important to perform routine penetration testing and risk assessments. There’s no straightforward answer as to how often you should pen test your network, but experts warn once a year probably isn’t frequently enough
  •
The article is about the reasons why the hotels are attractive for hackers, the author also explains the key concepts in the cyber security. Then, the biggest cyber attacks in hotel industry are described in the article. At the end, the author tells us how hoteliers can improve the security measures.
