  •
This article focuses on attendees using a modern day technology- mobile phones, tables and laptops at events and how event planners should engage more in incorporating them in to events and NiceMeeting, has done just that for event coordinators. NiceMeeting has introduced a presentation tool developed to enhance event engagements and maximize the value of knowledge exchange through live events.  Some cool features NiceMeeting also offers even planners is an AV application that turns attendees mobile device, such as iPad, iPhone, Tablet, laptop into a full-featured personal conference display.
  •
This article suggests that the use of handheld technology, such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops at events has become so widespread, that event planners need to incorporate them into daily use if they want an edge on business. Nicemeeting is just one of many new hospitality applications that enhances the event managing process for event planners. According to the article, it has the capability to turn technology, such as an Ipad or mobile device, into "a full-featured personal conference display." It creates an entirely interactive space. I think that this idea was brilliant, because regardless of whether people like it or not, cell phones are going to be present in the meeting space. This application makes the most of that occurrence and turns it into a positive thing.

IHIF: Leisure investment growing in importance for UK banks | News | Breaking Travel News - 0 views

  • hotels and leisure sector has become the third-largest lending market for NatWest and RBS under the Funding for Lending Scheme
  • Andrew Taylor, head of leisure for commercial banking at NatWest and RBS, said: “I’m delighted at how successful we have been in helping clients in the hotels and leisure sector access cost-effective funds – we are committed to working with businesses of all sizes.
  •
In the United Kingdom, the hospitality and leisure industry has become the third largest recipient of Funding for Lending Scheme loans. The only industries that lead the hospitality and leisure sector are agriculture and healthcare. This industry is a major lending market for NatWest and the Royal Bank of Scotland, which sees over £200m FLS loans to date. The current head of leisure for commercial banking at NatWest and RBS recently stated he was thrilled to help clients in this industry create cost effective funds. Additionally this team was created in September 2011 to focus on the hospitality industry. From 2011 to 2012 there was an increase in lending of eight percent. I find the concept of banking dedicated to the hospitality industry to be both beneficial and interesting. I feel this can help a business focus on creating the right types of investments in the hospitality field in order for a business to succeed. This can help small hospitality firms, hotels, restaurants, and other related businesses to seek financial help from someone who understands the field in the banking and investment industry. A dedicated system can focus on the needs of a hospitality business since it only focuses on this type of business for FLS loans.

IT, human capital investments boost competitiveness of travel, tourism & hospitality sectors | Elaf Group | AMEinfo.com - 0 views

Industry events have been emphasizing the importance of conducting advanced training programs to produce qualified personnel and provide unique services that meet the requirements of travelers and tourists. Greater focus is recommended towards promoting creativity and innovation across the travel and tourism market which is in need of 'travel consultants' rather than just 'ticket clerks,' for example. IT development is playing a vital role across the industry as an effective means to obtain services in a quicker, easier and more reliable manner. Online booking, for one, has received highly positive response from customers and has driven tourism companies and travel agencies to invest in the latest systems and talents to achieve greater customer satisfaction. Bin Mahfouz added that it is vital to adopt advanced IT systems that can support effective and convenient online services. Such systems, he said, promote competitiveness and help meet and exceed customer expectations."Rapid changes and fast-paced digital developments have influenced the Elaf Group of Companies to undertake major investments across the Saudi travel, tourism and hospitality sectors and beyond to keep pace with international developments and resolve competitiveness-driven challenges to reach a wider segment of customers. Some of the areas we are focusing on are the installation of better IT systems, the expansion of our hotel portfolio, and advanced training to enable our personnel to meet the many needs of our customers," said Bin Mahfouz.

Save the World through Sustainable Travel: How Destinations Are Being Rated : Condé Nast Traveler - 0 views

  • No industry has a bigger stake in protecting the environment and local communities than the travel industry.
  • And so it makes sense that the STLN has decided that its first project is focusing on a wonky sounding thing called “destination stewardship.”
  • The initiative will push destinations to improve governance, help travel companies decide where to do business, and, when the project’s last phase rolls out, allow us travelers to assess the social and economic impact of our trips.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • What’s the problem? “Political will,” said Seleni Matus, Vice President with Sustainable Travel International, which is implementing the STLN project. “Destinations have sustainability plans, but often they just end up on a shelf.” “Governments just don’t see sustainability as a priority,” said Aram Zerunian, General Manager of Half Moon hotel, who spoke on a panel at the launch event. “They are focused on the bottom line, and don’t see that these things are connected.”
  • The first phase is a survey that will determine how destinations need to improve in promoting sustainable tourism. Based on the 58 destinations that have piloted the survey, it looks like most governments have a ways to go.
  • “A tool like this can help us convene conversations with governments about sustainability. Our bottom line is if we don’t have great destinations to visit, we won’t have a business.”
  •
No industry has a bigger stake in protecting the environment and local communities than the travel industry. Like the article states, if coral reefs are destroyed, there will be no more snorkeling. And if the communities are not able to profit from the travelers coming to the area, their displeasure will show. In order to help green travelers decide if their trip is hurting the environment or harming local communities, or actually doing some good Sustainable Travel Leadership Network has started TravelWell. This project will also encourage the governments in the destination areas to improve sustainability practices, help travel companies decide where to do business. This initiative will score destinations based on the practices of piloted destinations, letting them know what areas they need to improve in. The problem is that while most governments are willing to create a plan, they do not actually follow through with the plans they've made. With TravelWell being implemented, destinations could lose out on the growing market of green travelers and this will affect their bottom line more in the long run. Because TravelWell will also give this information to potential investors, destinations also run the risk of losing potential investors. The main purpose of this tool is to keep the conversation of sustainability alive with governments. It would continually create a standard to measure the effectiveness of sustainability efforts as well as creating new ideas.

This article very much relates to what we discussed in class on Monday and what ebusiness' are doing these days to stay afloat. The internet is taking over the travel industry since everyone likes to do things on their own these days. Travel agents are trying to find ways around this growing trend. The two main tips for travel agents in this article are staying close with your existing customers while gaining new ones. This will alter the way your business will run. Once your existing customers realize you are loyal, easy to work with and focused them they will start spreading the world about the work you have done. The new customers will see the customer base you have and will more than likely choose you over t.agent 2 with only a few existing customers and no new clients in years. Once you complete a job, it is a must that you follow up. After everything is said and done, send them a quick email & maybe offer them a better package deal next time. Yes, the internet is putting a damper on the travel industry but at the same time agents are finding ways to work around this highly growing trend.

7 Things You Can Do to Make Internet Explorer More Secure - CIO.com - 0 views

  • How well Internet Explorer--or any Web browser, for that matter--protects against attacks and malware greatly depends on whether you keep it up to date and have the right security settings. Here's how to take the proper security measures with Internet Explorer 9 and 10.
  • IE lets you set custom security settings for different zones: Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. When you visit a website, IE automatically classifies it as in the Internet zone. The exceptions are websites hosted by your local network (say, a site set up for use on your company's network)--then it's Local Intranet--or sites that you've added to the Trusted or Restricted lists beforehand. You can set each zone to a predefined security level and customize the settings as well.
  •
The article by Eric Geier is mainly an informative piece as well as a basic tutorial of Internet Explorer Settings. Geier focuses on security, the core of a browser's purpose next to actual browsing. He provides a few tricks that aren't always set for users, such as tracking protection, a feature that protects your privacy and reduces pop-ups, especially from unwanted ads. The largest focus of the article is what I find most important, and it's most talked about for a reason. Staying on top of a browser's update is essential for not only the browser's performance but most importantly for your computer's security. To put it into perspective, every time you get on Internet Explorer, it's like leaving your house. If you update your browser constantly, you are always making sure the door is locked. But the longer you wait between updates the more likely the door will be unlocked. And if you completely forget to update for an extended period of time it's like leaving the door open for malware, or malicious software.

Almost everyone has a smart phone now and days. Apps are used for almost anything and this article gives evidence to how much you can do with an app. The article focuses on Las Vegas and how many hotels have different apps for every occasion. Vegas Mate caught my attention from how it has things such as "a listing of resort fees, top suites, information for travelers on getting around, conventions, gambling and more" that other Vegas apps don't have. I believe it takes great time and money for these companies to keep up with the ever changing schedules for each hotel. I'm a planner and I was really intrigued on how this certain app pulls up the latest update and weather from around the city and even "keep all those show tickets, dinner reservations and hotel bookings in order." I mean who can beat that? There's no excuse to why hotels and many other tourism spots don't have an app for all the amenities that are offered. It'll surprise guests and make them really pleased with their stay.

  • Green Path Transfers, part of the WHL Group, is a new, global, eco-friendly airport transfer and ground transportation network. We are currently operational in over 30 destinations around the world, with over 100 expected by the end of this year.
  • Our focus is on partnering with local operators who have made a commitment to environmental sustainability, especially through the use of low carbon emission fuels or engines
  • . They do not know how to access global markets with a professional transfer service priced for distribution (a problem they have as well with their other tour and activity products), nor do they have the technology to plug into global distribution, and this is where Green Path Transfers comes in.

  • Second is the move to a low carbon future. The WHL Group is committed in all its businesses to minimising our environmental footprint and supporting local communities. In designing the airport transfers business we noted the increasing number of “green” transfer and taxi companies appearing around the world and had the idea to try and bring as many of these into one big global family as we could
  • Green Path Transfers are simply in this case focussing our training, distribution efforts etc. around the transfers element of their business, giving them access to the technology to plug them into global markets.
  • First, ground transportation in much of the developing world is still very fragmented and immature.
  • Green Path Transfers offers transfers from airports, ship ports, bus stations, train stations and border crossings, as well as inter-city and inter-country transfers.

Green Path Transfers are a a fairly new Eco-friendly airport transfer and ground transportation network. The goal is to offer safe and professional transportation in global markets to travelers. In addition Green Path Transfers are focusing on a low carbon movement in the future. Are "Green Initiatives" in Hotels Bogus? Hotel Workers Think So : TreeHugger - 0 views

  • The hotel users get a few bucks back because they are not paying for services that they don't feel they need; the hotel saves a few bucks and a lot of water and electricity; everybody wins except the guys at the bottom who do the dirty work.
  •
This article contains the belief that the "green initiatives" of the hotels are more for saving the company money than saving our planet. The article continues to tell how some hotels give their customers rewards for not requiring housekeeping assistance. This leaves the question of whether this initiative is actually saving the company money or harming the employment of the housekeeping staff. I believe that going green is a proper step to take, especially looking at today's economy. Going green could improve our environment. However, this is not what I am seeing in today's companies. The companies are too reliant on profit. So, they use the green initiative as a way to actually cut costs, without actually going green. Companies should focus more on how the green initiative will affect the world as a whole in the future instead of completely focusing on profiting for now. Focusing on profit and covering it with the supposed green initiative will only drive up unemployment and create more problems with today's economy.

Are Independent Hotel Operators Leading the Way in Driving Property Management System Evolution for Greater Flexibility, Increased Functionality and Service? - SFGate - 0 views

  • Maestro empowers hundreds of high-touch independent operators and hotel groups to grow their business and stay ahead of the competition with innovative technology backed by the industry’s most reputable Diamond Plus service.
  • Lodging Hospitality Management (LHM) uses flag-mandated PMSes for its Hilton, IHG, and Marriott properties, but it relies on NORTHWIND’s Maestro System for its independents.
  • Maestro empowers hotel groups with enterprise-wide system solutions that deliver true centralized management controls on a single database. This enables closer property coordination, cross-property booking and upsell capabilities, and consistent guest recognition at all touch points for all properties.
  •
This article focuses on the benefits that Maestro (a property management system) offers to hotels and how it has been benefitting hotels that currently use their system, more specifically, smaller, independent hotels. Most chain hotels and large facilities are required to utilize a flag-mandated property management system. However, independent operators are not linked with these mandated systems, and have a choice as to which system to utilize. Maestro claims to offer Northwind, a service that allows Maestro to be utilized in a cloud-based system, enabling it to host multiple properties and save the establishment money by not requiring them to purchase servers and security, whereas a traditional PMS would have done so. The president of Northwind also states that they strive for their clients to succeed and that it is more of a partnership with those who utilize their service, and their goal is to make a hotel's operations more profitable and efficient. The article continues on to explain the uses and functions of the Maestro system, including being fully-integrates and offering operators loyalty program benefits and the functionality to compete with programs that were solely available to chains. It also tracks points earned and redemption stays as well for those loyalty programs, and claims to minimize errors and save operators money. It also allows integrations that provides social media outlets through the property management system, allowing the user to operate their business simultaneously through different systems. Maestro also boasts that the utilization of their property management system allows hotels to increase their direct bookings through the property for a lower cost than if they were to utilize a different system in which it was not flawlessly and seamlessly integrated with a global distribution system. It seems to be a property management system that enables users to complete many tasks at once, from one location, without having the hassle of

Kempinski Hotels see their future in the cloud | cleverhotel.org - 0 views

  • Cloud has evolved from a vogue word to one of the main factors impacting hotel software purchasing and the way hospitality does business in general.
  • . It’s becoming more cost effective, secure and reliable, but we are still struggling with the communication limitations in several regions like Middle East, Africa and China where there isn’t enough bandwidth or too much latency.
  • One of the main issues when upgrading locally is that you need to get the approval from individual owners to get the upgrades done as there is a cost involved which does not happen when you have a central environment.
  •
This report shows Kempinski hotels are going to use cloud PMS. It analysis the limit of local PMS, for instance, which is difficult in updating because individual hotels have to update one by one. It is also hard to manage all the hotels with central standard if the version of PMS are not the same. In this case, one update will take care of this situation if hotels are using cloud PMS. Besides, cloud technology will release IT manager work as a server, IT manager will have more time focusing on customer-side technology to enhance satisfaction and loyalty. On the other hand, area like Africa and China still have some bandwidth limit so that cloud PMS are not available. Kempinski are trying to find out solution for that. Meanwhile, they will make new PMS more effective by reduce intermediates between hotels and distribution company, provide customers more channels to be served, like tablet and mobile phone.
