  • Cloud has evolved from a vogue word to one of the main factors impacting hotel software purchasing and the way hospitality does business in general.
  • . It’s becoming more cost effective, secure and reliable, but we are still struggling with the communication limitations in several regions like Middle East, Africa and China where there isn’t enough bandwidth or too much latency.
  • One of the main issues when upgrading locally is that you need to get the approval from individual owners to get the upgrades done as there is a cost involved which does not happen when you have a central environment.
  •
This report shows Kempinski hotels are going to use cloud PMS. It analysis the limit of local PMS, for instance, which is difficult in updating because individual hotels have to update one by one. It is also hard to manage all the hotels with central standard if the version of PMS are not the same. In this case, one update will take care of this situation if hotels are using cloud PMS. Besides, cloud technology will release IT manager work as a server, IT manager will have more time focusing on customer-side technology to enhance satisfaction and loyalty. On the other hand, area like Africa and China still have some bandwidth limit so that cloud PMS are not available. Kempinski are trying to find out solution for that. Meanwhile, they will make new PMS more effective by reduce intermediates between hotels and distribution company, provide customers more channels to be served, like tablet and mobile phone.

Cloud infrastructure: Three views from the IaaS sharp end | ZDNet - 0 views

  • With its promise of lower costs and greater flexibility, infrastructure as a service (IaaS) already accounts for the largest single area of cloud spending.
  • Others, such as the Kempinski Hotels group, are for the moment progressing through an interim phase, with a considerable amount of infrastructure provided by the cloud but with the rest remaining on premise.
  • The proposed model consisted of concentric levels of security with a highly secure environment at its centre, which only AWS services can talk to. The next level was only accessible to AWS and the Geneva corporate office with its 10-strong IT department, with a subsequent level for the hotels, followed by a level for public access for web services and third parties.

  • The answer was a Vyatta redundant soft firewall that allowed Ward to create a VPN tunnel from all the Kempinski properties.
  • Action for Children's decision to move the web operation onto Rackspace's Open Cloud is designed to solve online scalability issues, but also offers the charity a chance to shift some of the massive datasets of customer, donor, fundraiser and foster parent information to the cloud.
  • "We need to be able to do these analyses when they're needed. This is where the cloud really comes into its own and delivers in terms of cost savings. It means people can still use the infrastructure and the fundraising CRM system, but we can run major pieces of analysis without impeding other people's workloads or slowing down our internal network."
  • "Stick something together on a cloud instance, test it and see if it works. No, it doesn't, drop it, pull something else out — the amount of time to set it up is less, the amount of money spent on putting it together is less," he says.

This article looks at the growing trend of the cloud system. You hear the opinions from a few different companies in varying industries on the trending system and how they are implementing the cloud system. Digital iRiS Sommelier - 0 views

  •
The iRiS Sommelier is an application that turned the iPad into a digital Sommelier. It allows diners to browse through the wine list in their preferred language, view each wine label, and narrow the selection according to the type of wine, color, size, grape and region, as well as price. The iRiS Sommelier does not just lead to more informed dining experience, but also reduces wine selection time. Furthermore, this application helped to increase wine sales by 21% at the Kepinski Hotel in Budapest. In regards to the operation, the great feature is that restaurants are able to update their wine lists instantly, as well as change prices and availability. In addition, wine menu printing costs are minimized and environmental benefits are maximized. In my opinion, the iRiS Sommelier is not just a great new way to introduce the wine menu and update the inventory, but also to educate diners and give diners more time to enjoy their wine and food.

I think that mobile devices (smart phones) are playing an important role in the lifestyle of the restaurant goers, this applicaton not only educate the consumers about wine and food, but also keep them up date of the new trends.

What's Behind Alibaba's $486 Million Investment in Hotel Tech Giant Shiji - Skift - 0 views

  • Shiji, a Beijing-based maker of software for hotels, retailers, and food service providers, is much better at raising funding than it is at explaining to Western vendors and media its global strategy.
  • E-commerce giant Alibaba is investing $486 million in Shiji, a Beijing-based maker of software for hotels, retailers, and food service providers.
  • Within China, Shiji has the largest share of the market for property management software, which helps hotels run their operations, and central reservation system tools, which enable hotels to distribute their rates.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • InterContinental Hotels Group, Kempinski, and Shangri-La hotels in China use its software tools, to give a few example. So do Starbucks and Swarovski as retailers
  • Within China, the big online travel players Ctrip and Qunar provide competition with their own self-developed or acquired solutions for the hotel supply base.
  • Looking beyond China, Shiji has lately been expanding into Western Europe and North America, particularly on the hotel technology front.
  • When Goldman Sachs analysts researched Shiji a few years ago, they said it was dominant in providing IT systems to high-end hotels in China, and had a greater than 30 percent market share. That share has likely grown.
  • A key growth area then and now is helping hotels and restaurant integrate their payment systems with Shiji’s back-end IT infrastructure through Shiji’s own or through third-party payment hardware and software.
  • Another gap is its ability to copy the Oracle Hospitality playbook and attempt to cross-sell more of its services to hotel food-and-beverage divisions.
  •
Alibaba is a well-known e-commerce company and the largest stockholder of Shiji. It added investment in this dominating PMS software company in China. Shiji is not only expanding its PMS software business in China, but also seeking chances to expand their business to Europe and America. It has the goal of being a well-known company worldwide and has a long way to go according to some business analysts.

  • Many hospitality providers and hotels are using biometrics technology to verify user identity and secure payment information for a variety of guest services: in-room tablet apps, premium on-screen entertainment services, high-speed internet service, and access to amenities like the pool and gym
  • The streamlined ID process frees up staff so they can spend more time and resources on other activities, allowing them to fully commit to their role as hosts

  • For companies that already have a content management system or guest platform, it’s easy to integrate secure optical character recognition in the form of biometrics facial recognition technology that matches a face with an ID to generate a QR code
  • Case in point: Hoteza, an interactive, guest-facing platform, is using biometrics to verify photo-based identification for mobile check-in. Over 500 hotels around the globe including Hilton, Radisson, Wyndham, Kempinski, IHG, and Accor look to Hoteza’s cloud-based content management system for online check-in solutions, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), mobile and in-room tablet apps, digital signage, and high-speed Internet access
  • Biometrics not only helps recognize users when they attempt to log in to the hospitality guest platform, but it also reduces operational costs by enabling self-service capabilities
  • Hotels and resorts each offer a unique personalized experience when greeting customers as they walk in the door, but if there is one common thread in the industry it’s that hospitality professionals constantly go the extra mile to create a superior experience. Biometrics is advancing that by blending familiarity and ease-of-use with modern, secure, and innovative technology
  •
Biometrics usage in the hotel sector have been ramping up. Biometrics links a user's I.D. and credit card information with biometrics like a photo or fingerprint and this tech can be used throughout the hotel for things like in-room purchases and access to the gym and pool. Using biometrics allows the hotel staff to focus on being hosts.
