California's Green Chemistry Initiative: "Work Plan" basics and the 7 product categories - 3 action steps | Insights | DLA Piper Global Law Firm - 0 views

  • Under the Green Chemistry Initiative, manufacturers of “Priority Products” – product/chemical combinations targeted by the DTSC – must conduct an Alternatives Analysis, evaluating the use of substitute chemicals with lesser environmental harm and reporting results to regulators.
  •
This article is about California's newly implemented law called the Green Chemistry Initiative to "increase the regulation and oversight of consumer product chemical exposure". They are the first state to legally force companies to actually be aware of not only what their products are made of but also how it can be hurt the consumer once disposed. The best part is that they force the companies to provide a list of alternatives that will also be reviewed before a decision is made by the Dept of Toxic Control. at the moment there is a short list of products but California would like to expand this initiative. With expansion, my concern would be how many products actually being regulated and would there be enough funding and manpower to conclude these in-depth reviews for them to be accurate?

Now this is a sight to see! Dubai is recognized as one of the fastest growing cities in the world. This rapid urbanization has led to many environmental issues because of the critical environment, lack of resources such as building materials, and the surprising expansion. Due to it's expansion, their is a high demand for electricity. While being a city with a high consumption of electricity, Dubai has taken steps to introduce solar power on a large scale with now its first ever hotel. Dubai seems to be ahead of the curve, let's just hope it doesn't fail them long-term.

Naples Grande Beach Resort (a personal competitor for my property) has upgrades its PBX system and chosen Cloud5, a cloud based system that allows for on-going integration that does not degrade over time. As stated in the article, "With Cloud5's hosted solution, our systems are always current with the latest software functionality, without the need to purchase future expensive upgrades or interrupt hotel operations. We're always operating with the most advanced features that allow us to deliver fast, reliable guest service across our expansive resort. This upgrade has even reduced monthly telecommunications expenses which adds value directly to our bottom-line.". This very statement intrigued me as I recall when my property transitioned to HotSOS for our PBX software. Like most other softwares, integration with Opera our rooms system was a challenge and it was not without hiccup and initial challenges. Because it is not cloud based, the property does need to purchase upgrades and re-install in individual areas throughout the property. Our Sales team does however, work off an internet based software - Salesforce - and it allows not only for easier and seamless integration, but it also allows us to access it from home. It will be interesting to see how Cloud5 changes the guest experience for those at Naples Grande and how many other companies will begin moving towards this format of system.

New Hotel Technology Likely to Bring Sticker Shock - 3 views

  • The need for a new generation of computers, data centers and security equipment for the nation’s hotels is driving up the expense of technology in the hospitality industry,

  • The upgrades involve both communications that make life more convenient for travelers, and the unseen hardware that makes hotels function more smoothly.
  • Hackers are more aggressive than ever, and the cost of protecting hotel systems has risen accordingly
  • The hotel industry hasn’t kept up with the state of the art to the degree other industries have, says Shah, particularly with regard to pricing and customer convenience.
  • Traditionally, too many hotel managers focus on the condition of the carpets and walls  — whether they need painting or new pictures, or fresh plants in the lobby, rather than scrutinizing their technological infrastructure.
  • Examining how people buy and use media shows that bandwidths are growing more sophisticated, and the trend in a hotel experience is to become more connected,
  • And too many hotels are unable to provide that level of technical response.
  • Costly upgrades don’t always translate into higher rates, however. “The question really is, can you charge more for it? Or is it part of the experience?”
  • high-speed Internet, for instance, it’s an amenity that customers demand, but they’re not necessarily willing to pay extra for it.
  • Another expense involves business intelligence technology — the detailed analysis and tracking of a hotel’s daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance.
  • Operating teams then analyze the results and plan their financial strategy on a day-to-day basis, says Shah.
  • When it comes to creature comforts, travelers don’t want to compromise, says Shah. They want the same comforts on the road that are available at home

The Hotel Industry has not kept up with the state of the art technology to the degree other industries have. It's at a point where a great investment is needed to upgrade technology they use both in communications as well as the unseen hardware that make hotels function on a day to day basis. The cost of replacement and and expansion of business data centers and security is very large. But who bears the cost?, since guests have come to expect ammenities such as high speed internet, but aren't necessarily willing to pay for it. This is an inevitable cost hotel corporations are going to have work in to their budgets in order to stay relevant and competitive

Why unattended retail is exploding in response to consumer acceptance| NAMA 2022 | Retail Customer Experience - 0 views

  • A host of technologies and service concepts have come on the scene as of late: "smart" coolers, third party delivery, artificial intelligence, computer vision and biometric identity verification
  • Moderator Bill Moxey, director of strategy and planning at PepsiCo Inc., made one thing clear at the outset: Thousands of locations will be adding unattended retail concepts and technologies in the near future as the consumer's preference for self service is stronger than ever.
  • Consumers wanted to know exactly what they were getting… and they didn't feel pressure about somebody asking if they wanted a side."
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • When consumers feel less pressure, they feel more comfortable…and we buy more," he said. They will spend 20% to 40% more per transaction in an unattended setting.
  • According to the research, half of consumers think unattended is faster and more than a third of consumers think unattended is more efficient, Moxey said. Two thirds say it is more comfortable, and one third like the ability to browse and purchase without interacting with employees. The biggest takeaway is consumers don't feel pressure and they feel safe.
  • When consumers get full control over the experience, they get more excited.
  • The expansion will include a projected 12,000 lodging sites, a projected 3,000 airports, a projected 11,000 health care sites, a projected 3,000 college and university sites (including gyms, libraries, common areas and auditoriums), Moxey said. The majority of expansion will be in healthcare, travel and recreation channels.
  • Coffey pointed out that consumers on average increased snack consumption from 2.2 snacks per day to over five snacks."The people at home were rewarding themselves between Zoom calls," he said. When they go back to work, these habits won't change, he said
  • lassman said the pantry/OCS future is hard to gauge since it depends on customer budgets. With economies scaling and budgets cycling, there will be some type of need, he said, but the scale of it is uncertain.

IT Investment - Calculating the Value of an IT Investment - 0 views

  •
Justifying IT investments is a critical skill for anyone working in technology. It's important to understand the terminology and basic techniques to make a choice to invest a new equipment. Capital Expenditure (CAPEX), Depreciation, Cash Flow, Discount Rate are basic IT investment analysis terminologies. Capital is used to identify a purchase that can be used more than one year. Usually companies will have policies on the useful life of equipment. Depreciation is used to spread the expanse of a capital IT investment over the useful life of purchase. Cash flow means that the movement of cash. And there are cash and non-cash items. Discount rate can be used to account for the fact that a dollar today is worth more than past. There are two simple IT investment techniques, Net Present Value, and Payback Period. Net present value lines up a series of cash flows over time and discounts each to the current period. It take into account the time value of money. It typical to look at cash inflows (saved maintenance costs from retired software), and outflows (cost of the software) over a 3 to 5 year period and discount the net inflow less the net outflow into a single value. Payback period analysis is trying to indicate how long the IT investment takes to recover the cost of the investment. Usually the shorter the payback period the less risky the IT investment

BENEFIT - 0 views

  • Technology has been a key driver of growth for the hospitality sector over the last decade. New technologies for jobs like real-time inventory access, seamless exchange of operational information and collation of key performance data, have transformed the hotel and restaurant business. And the biggest positive from this process has been the enhanced customer experience, leading to higher loyalty. Thus, technology has increased profits for restaurants and hotels, and also helped in reining in costs on a long-term basis by reducing manpower and improving the quality of service.
  • Key technologies used Currently the most popular technologies being used are accounting systems for back office needs and the Internet, along with POS solutions for front office solutions. These systems are found in over 90 per cent of the establishments in the industry.   K Ramakrishnan, president, Marketing, Café Coffee Day, says “The two key technologies we use are POS for our café operations and ‘SAP IS Retail’ for the back-end warehouse supply chain requirements. Besides, our Cafés are Wi-Fi enabled. We also use Facebook and Twitter to understand and listen to what our consumers have to  say. It serves as an excellent tool to receive reviews on what we do and how we can make the café space more fun and exciting. We use these inputs to refresh our menu, look and overall feel,” he adds.
  • Touch screen POS: Point of sale systems now have a touch screen  display to allow cashiers and servers to input orders. It automatically sends the order to the kitchen without the need for a call or a manual dining ticket. The latest POSs can even send separate dining tickets for different food preparations, for an order. Stock and time clock management: These two components can be directly integrated in the latest POS terminals, allowing employees to clock in and out of any POS. The central computer keeps tab of the hours worked. It also allows computers to keep track of food and dry stock, based on the orders that are coming back through the POS system. It alerts the server, if a particular ingredient is out of stock. Technology also helps accurately measure the exact amount that goes into a fryer basket or in portions/ servings. This helps in maintaining the same standards each time an order is placed. Modern financial control tools allow managers to make balance sheets, statements of cash flow and income. There are advanced softwares available, which help the management get a clear view of the finances involved in the day-to-day running of the restaurant. Future technologies Many new technologies are also knocking at the door of the Indian hospitality industry. Internationally, these tools are already in use to improve efficiency. For instance, client server technologies (CST) offer great advantages to mid and large sized multi-property hospitality chains. They allow owners to effectively integrate disparate systems like multiple computer platforms or software, accumulated over the years. They simplify report generation and MIS (management information system) support, making these functions more efficient. Players that are in expansion mode and are trying to overhaul their IT infrastructure can use these solutions to reduce their IT costs and improve staff productivity. Software as a service (SaaS) or pay as-you-go services (where software such as ERP solutions are made available on demand over the Internet and users are required to pay a monthly rental based on the time and nature of use) have also emerged as another cost effective way of handling data and processes over the Internet. Here, companies can reap big dividends by effectively cutting down on their system maintenance costs. Green technology is another option, players can look at. It helps improve sustainability in areas like energy efficiency through the use of solar power for cooking or water heating. Solid waste management, plastic and paper recycling machines, rain water harvesting, and water efficient technologies, are other green technologies. If deployed in earnest, restaurants and hotels can reap long term benefits, besides scoring high on environment friendliness and brand image improvement, among customers.

Miami hotel transactions expected to hit $750 million in 2013 | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • "The Miami brand is stronger than ever reporting records on records in 2012, including 13.9 million overnight visitors," said Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO William D. Talbert, III, CDME.
  • Miami's metro area is among the highest performing U.S. hotel markets, achieving recording occupancy and ADR in 2012, and ranking fourth in terms of RevPAR performance.
  • Miami draws in a massive influx of tourists from around the globe, and during the past 20 years the market has emerged as a crucial commercial hub linking the United States to Latin America, and eventually Asia with the imminent expansion of the Panama Canal.
  •
This article caught my eye because I think we can relate to the hotel projections for Miami this year. It basically states that everyone wants to be in Miami, and I can see why. I also agree with the topic the article touched up on: Miami is a melting pot. It is, as it states, a "...commercial hub linking the United States to Latin America..." I think that the rising tourism in Miami can help increase revenue and can eventually continue to market Miami is such a positive light. Yes, every city has its flaws but I think Miami will continue to bring in tourists and hopeful residents.

POS Shipment Trends in 2011 | Top Stories | | Hospitality Magazine (HT) - 0 views

  • Whichever view you ascribe to, it is clear that by the end of 2010, the hospitality industry chose to move forward with expansion and new POS purchases.
  • There remain a large number of gift shops and other small stores within hotels and resorts that utilize electronic cash registers.
  • While there are few full rollouts that we are aware of, there are numerous hospitality providers that are experimenting with mobile POS. We expect that to be an area of growth going forward.
  •
This article, though a few years old, discusses the implications and overall market share the POS has in the marketplace. While these suppliers saw a downturn in the recent recession (as most businesses did), they are beginning to see their business turn the 'corner' as hospitality companies invest into their companies...primarily getting out of date systems current and adding mobile applications. Proving that they are embracing the technology surge in the hospitality industry.

Essential Hospitality Tech Investments for 2013 | ManagerPlus BlogManagerPlus Blog - 0 views

  • The challenges facing the hotel industry have shaped the new reality chains are operating in, and forced organizations to find new tools.
  • Not only have guests reached a critical phase in the way that they locate and interact with travel services online, but every class of customer is now demanding even more in terms of data access and tech-related amenities.
  • Guests are looking for your website to be a digital portal to the hotel itself, not just an online booking service.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • An effective hospitality management system is now a requirement for entry to the industry, not just a cost-reduction measure.
  • Guests also want clear rate details, which many hotels are loathe to provide without certain gate-keeping features in place.
  • Hospitality’s growth in emerging markets has also proved challenging online, and many websites are lagging behind when it comes to serving non-English-speaking clients, providing region-specific sites and websites for the growing mobile market.
  • Digitization of previously paper-based processes provides asset tracking and inventory management tools that let managers plan ahead with preventative maintenance schedules and materials ordering.
  • Internet access has long been a prerequisite for high-end frequent travelers, but it’s now increasingly a necessity for all travelers.
  • These investments in technology aren’t just bonus features that chains should be looking to offer their clients; they’re requirements to compete in an industry that has been hardened and refined by a massive global recession and globalization.
  •
With all of the challenges that have faced the hotel industry in recent years, organizations have been forced to find new tools to make sure that guests are satisfied. Technology has been a very important part of making sure that organizations are able to do this. Guest now have certain expectations from hotels concerning a hotels website. Not even expectations, but demands. A hotels website is expected to be a direct portal to the hotels. More than just an online booking tool, but also provide photos, information on the area, and accurate rates and options. Having an effective hospitality management system is also essential to customer satisfaction. When expanding hotels to different areas, having a system in place to ensure that all the hotels produce the same results, the same successful results, is mandatory to remain a viable brand. This is especially true in areas where cultue and language can be a chanllenge to expansion. Being able to digitilize the processes that are usually done on paper is also vital to hotel operations because it helps managers track inventory and plan ahead for preventitive maintenence and ordering materials. This also introduces cost savings. Where having internet access has been a requirement for more high-end hotel guests before, it has now become a requirement for all travelers. With the use of mobile phone, tablets, and laptops that all have wireless capabilities, it is increasingly imparative that hotels increase their bandwith. What was at one time bonus features, is now a requirement for hotels to remain competitive in the hospitality markets. These investments in technology are the foundation for success in this year.

Thai Tourism Seven Green Concepts: Green Direction by Tourism Authority of Thailand. - 0 views

  •
The article states that the "Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has committed to the social and environmental sustainability in a broad and long-term planning of the hospitality and tourism sector development throughout the country". The previous focus of Thai tourism was on social and economic development. The focus has now been shifted towards minimizing the ecological impact of tourism. In efforts to minimize the ecological impact, the TAT has introduced Seven Green Concepts in 2011. The Seven Green Concepts include: * Green Heart * Green Logistics * Green Destinations * Green Communities * Green Activities * Green Service * Green + Despite some criticism, the TAT will look at "managing short-term market recovery, long-term market expansion, improved economic revenue, and the preservation of ecological assets". The upkeep of national parks, protection of wildlife and green capacity building will help sustain the environment. Hotels and resorts are also encouraged to follow Green guidelines. In 2011, there were 220 hotels with Green Leaf recognition and 535 smoke-free hotels. With increasing popularity of Green concepts, these numbers were expected to increase in the future.

Like we learned in accounting and financing classes, ratio analysis is the best  method to analyze finance in a hotel, which compares the current ratio with the past in order to make feasible investments in the future. What's more, long term financing in hotel industry gives lots of investment potentials. For example, by investing new sectors in F&B as well as accommodation, the job opportunity has also been increased. Besides the investments in hotels, hospitality investment also includes in airlines, cruise lines and tourism bureaus which can also bring profits. So long term financing help hospitality industry make a successful goal with experience and cost effective strategic plan in order to attract more and more tourists as well as guests.

I didn't agree with the pricing method of examining the past and the prices. What for? Prices, consumers wants and needs along with products constantly change. It's an unpredictable market at times. So examining the history would be a waste of time, the only thing you could possibly get from this would be to see how much your costs have gone up in recent years and plain your profit margins accordingly. But you can do this with out having to manage your previous records and histroy. You could just look at any expense report and go from there

Instead of introducing some new technology, this article is more like an advertisement. it does not introduce much information about this technology and it is not a news for us to know a cloud based PMS. This article introduces the accouting systems developed by Benchmark Hospitality International. Benchmark invested in the hospitality industry's first "private" cloud platform to host its property's systems and data. Profitvue back office accounting system was mentioned, which has the advantages of more flexible, simple and faster to use, and save money. Also, it is safer to use this private cloud-based to save data, which can bring lots of benifits to shareholders and management teams. In my opinion, all hospitality organizations should enhance their accouting and financial systems to create a safer financial environment, and to get clear information of the financial operations and make further plans to control costs.
