Technology Innovation Brings Electricity to the Hotel Industry - 0 views

  • Hotels’ total energy consumption costs can be 6 percent of the operating cost and utilities cost continue to rise.
  • While other energy-reducing technologies have produced limited results, cogeneration appears to be a technology that will meet expectations.
  • It’s a technology that has significant corporate investment behind it so we expect to see continued research and development to improve the technology and lower its pricing.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • The primary reason for a change to cogeneration would be financial savings.
  • he current payback for the investment is right at three years and it is expected that timeline to continue to decrease.
  •
This article focuses on the technology innovation regarding electricity in hotels. The article states that the total energy consumption costs for hotels will continue to rise. Luckily, there is an energy saving technology that is worth investing in. Cogeneration, which the article states is known as "combined heat and power (CHP), helps minimize the heat and power from a single fuel source". It takes natural gas and converts it to electricity. This helps the hotel use heat for areas of their operation. This technology supplies 95% of the electricity needed for a standard hotel. Besides helping the hotel's electricity, heat, and power system be more efficient, the CHP helps with financial costs. According to the article, investing in a CHP will bring a payback in about 3 years and this time expected to decrease. This means hotels will receive a return on their investment in a shorter period of time. In my opinion, this is great technology to invest in. It not only helps with financial savings but it is also better for the environment. The business will benefit from it because it helps with operations. Also, consumers will be more likely to want to stay in a hotel with an energy efficient system. It goes hand in hand with the Go Green initiative that has proved to be successful and consumer driven. In all, investing in technology is a risky business. For this specific energy saving technology, I believe it is worth investing in. The cogeneration would be ideal for "hotels with 100 or more rooms, high electric rates, hot water heating system, and high use needs".

Solar power rising in southern African hotel industry - 0 views

  • Members of the southern African hospitality industry are rapidly joining the green revolution and its not for show or Google ranking - there are savings to be had and natural vistas to preserve.
  • 204kWp solar-powered installation. Consisting of 640 photovoltaic panels, the installation has been mounted on a horizontal weighting system that continuously tracks the sun – a first in Namibia.
  • During the day, the installation provides the laundry and restaurant with power. It provides 92% of our required daily power usage, and that is during the reduced sunlight of winter,” enthuses Williams.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • the panels are guaranteed for 25 years of use at a minimum of 80% capacity. “The lodge can expect to recover the value of the installation through power savings within five years,” enthuses Swart.
  •
In southern Africa the hospitality industry is shifting to become more green with the use of solar power and they aren't only doing this for the image, but because it return on investment is very fast and hotels can power many departments with the rise of new solar technology. Not only do they install solar power panels, they use a new technology that tracks the sun movement so that the panels are shifted so they can gain the most energy possible. According to one hotelier they are able to power their laundry and restaurant at 92% fully with the solar power created. This technology has many advantages as not only will it improve the image, it has a ROI within 5 years and the panels could last 25 years when running on 80% capacity.

Canalys: Cloud spending hit record $31 billion in Q1 2020, but growth continues to slow... - 0 views

  • spending increase was an established trend, with Q1 2019

  • But while cloud usage has certainly been up, service providers have experienced a downside —
  • Indeed, some of the industries hit worst by the global pandemic — such as hospitality, tourism, and construction — have cut or delayed planned cloud spending.
  • We saw an unprecedented surge in demand and use of cloud-based applications primarily driven by remote working — not just collaboration tools, but also cloud security, which was also added to by increased ecommerce and other online activity
  • What is clear, however, is that cloud services will likely only grow in demand if remote working continues in the future.
  •
this article is about the increasing demands of cloud computing, and is also leading to a rise in dollar spending. Remote working has been the drive for the increasing demands of cloud computing but as the result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the slow down of large business advising led project. The concern is that while the demands are going up, the actual growth of cloud computing is not.

GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse - 0 views

  • GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse
    • rnobl005

This article is rather short but I thought it complemented the discussion post for this week. Travel Click surveyed 900 travel agents worldwide and discovered that hotel bookings will surpass 68 million reservations by the end of 2017 thanks to Global Distribution Systems. In 2016 the estimated number of bookings was 66 million, meaning GDS is gaining in popularity as a means of securing travel arrangements even today. Like the Whitepaper suggests, Sabre, Amadeus, and Travelport are the 3 major companies supporting this service. I thought it was interesting that the article brought up the issue of "rate parity" as a means to distinguish one hotel from another. Travel agents are less likely to book a hotel if the hotel is offering different rates across platforms, especially if the GDS rate is higher. Again, bringing this article back to the discussion questions, this is evidence that there are benefits to using a travel agent when planning a trip. They have a comprehensive knowledge of the market at their disposable compared to the average person searching for the best deal on their own. Towards the end of the article the author brings up that travel agents are not using Airbnb because the platform isn't integrated into the GDS - which was not surprising.
  • travel agents are using the GDS to make a record number of hotel reservations.
  • 68 million reservations
    • rnobl005

I think this figure them mention is slightly misleading though. In context this sounds like the total number of reservations made using GDS systems, not necessarily the number of reservations made by travel agents.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • increase of more than 2 million reservations from the number of bookings generated in 2016.
    • rnobl005

Regardless of who is responsible for the amount of bookings, I think an increase of 2 million bookings in one year is evidence that GDS is still an extremely profitable revenue stream for the hospitality industry.
  • One of the most important things that travel agents want when it comes to hotel bookings on the GDS is rate parity. Hotels that don’t offer the same prices on the GDS that they do elsewhere are not looked upon favorably.
  • Hotels that offer great amenities are also among the ones that travel agents book the most.
    • rnobl005

The most appealing amenities mentioned in the article are swimming pools, free parking, airport shuttles or transfers, hotel gyms and early check-in/late check-out. Hoteliers should take this information into account and find ways to highlight these features at their properties.
  • global travel agents rely on the GDS as an essential operating system for conducting hotel research and booking reservations
  • Travel agents continue to rely heavily on the GDS for booking and shy away from non-traditional accommodation options such as Airbnb because they are not available on the GDS.
  •
The article talks about the use of GDS and its importance in the current Hospitality World. It shows a study which refers GDS as the most important booking tool for travel agents, citing record numbers in booking in 2017
  •
Based on the reading GDS assist and has raise the profit margin for hotel across the board. Hotels are more profitable due to this feature .

Because event planning is a stressful and demanding career, automation of application helps efficiently in its own way. It also states how technology helps planners to save abundantly because of how practical it is to use an application where all your information are stored in. Many applications are rising to help with the planning. They help with organizing with all the details and all data are stored and save. Smart phones are a major part, in that it is a major tool that helps the planner pull up their activities and they can also use it as business contacts and work with all the vendors. These applications are the best ways to help cut cost and a good solution to improve new strategies in the event planning workplace.

Every year technology plays a more significant role in the hospitality industry, including the event planning sector counting for direct spending of $263 billion in the U.S. market alone. According to the article, there are 5 trends that companies will focus on in order to demonstrate return on investment. Smart event will be taking center stage in 2013 therefore operators need to choose smart technology that will allow them to operate more efficiently and grow their business. Automation and streamline will help reduce costs and will allow for more transparency. The next trend is for planner to achieve greater efficiency through solution consolidation that will free up planning s time allowing them to focus on their creativity. Meeting planners will also leverage technology to gather in depth information about their attendees to find out what their preferences are so they can adjust their strategies. Lastly, event organizers will engage audience with smartphones. This trend I think is very crucial and will make events appealing to attendees who will be able to use app for the conference prior during and after the event allowing them to be connected to all the information and recourses at all times.
  •
This article contains information about the expected event trends this year that will possibly increase ROI. The list of expected trends all surrounded the technological advancements that are enhancing event planning. The advancements include the increased use of smartphones to conduct business. This technological increase will also reduce company costs. It is also expected to improve company value. I agree with technology improving company value. Technology is advancing majorly throughout the world. It is also making it easier for companies and consumers to interact. Smartphones, alone, are very popular in today's economy and are a great example of technological advancement. Being that people already use their smartphones to check emails, save event dates and contact other people (whether over the phone or by video), conducting business will be somewhat simple to adapt to. Increasing company technology to reduce costs is a good move. However, the companies should keep in mind that losing one cost will only open the door for another one. When dealing with technology, there are always risks (usually malfunction risks). So, companies should keep in mind that there is a possibility that expenses will incur for the technological maintenance that will be needed to keep the technology operating.

The Great Recession has been come to end point; therefore, expected corporate and event spend will begin to rise from 9 to 20 percents in next two years. The author has scooped out 5 major trends that will rapidly increase Return on Investment (ROI) for 2013 and future. 1. But only 25 percent of organizations see its effective, in 2013 organizations will choose smart event technology to help them operate more effectively 2. Automation will help event planners reduce expenses: Strategic meeting management ( SMM) technology can help event planners adapt to new methods to identify event-related functions and reduce costs. 3. Planners will achieve greater efficiency through solution consolidation: In the future, organizers will lay out their workloads by choosing consolidated solution, saving time and freeing up event planners to focus on making event better and well organized. 4. Event  organizers will engage audiences with smartphones: New all-in one apps will help organizer to provide all the information needed for attendee about the event. 5. Meeting planners will leverage technology to gather in-dept attendee information: focusing on the need of attendee is a crucial part of event planner, to be able to get requirement of attendee in real time will help organizer to adjust their plan, strategies on the fly and increase ROI. Increasing the need for events in 2013 and future requires event planner to be able to get familiarize with new event trend and technology to minimize the cost and maximize the ROI for an organization.

Hotels may also see benefits moving into future years with easier training due to familiarity with this type of technology and customers with easy-to-use technology. For hotels and consumers attempting to plan completely customized experiences, trip-planning functionality is built into the app providing many possible uses. This app to me seemed to be very logical in the current progression of technology. The majority of people today

A New Meeting Frequency - 0 views

"A New Meeting Frequency" discusses near-field communication (NFC) and its gaining popularity with the meeting and event planning industry. This form of communication enables smart devices to have communication between each other; one acts as the writer, the other as the reader. According to meeting tech consultant Corbin Ball, "NFC marks the next step toward a cashless and paperless society".  Barclaycard and Chase, just to name a few, have adopted ISIS Mobile Wallet which lets customers make payments and collect rewards. "Industry professionals are beginning to see adoption in interactive events and business-to-customer trade shows", and are present in some current NFC applications. Contactless payment, automated ticketing, social networking, exchange of information (maps, business cards), registration, attendance access and control are some of the major ways this technology is utilized presently in the industry. Usage is slowly on the rise, particularly with regard to corporate networking events, and potential is huge.  NFC technology is extremely innovative, saves money and can be a great marketing tool.

Miami hotel transactions expected to hit $750 million in 2013 | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • "The Miami brand is stronger than ever reporting records on records in 2012, including 13.9 million overnight visitors," said Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO William D. Talbert, III, CDME.
  • Miami's metro area is among the highest performing U.S. hotel markets, achieving recording occupancy and ADR in 2012, and ranking fourth in terms of RevPAR performance.
  • Miami draws in a massive influx of tourists from around the globe, and during the past 20 years the market has emerged as a crucial commercial hub linking the United States to Latin America, and eventually Asia with the imminent expansion of the Panama Canal.
  •
This article caught my eye because I think we can relate to the hotel projections for Miami this year. It basically states that everyone wants to be in Miami, and I can see why. I also agree with the topic the article touched up on: Miami is a melting pot. It is, as it states, a "...commercial hub linking the United States to Latin America..." I think that the rising tourism in Miami can help increase revenue and can eventually continue to market Miami is such a positive light. Yes, every city has its flaws but I think Miami will continue to bring in tourists and hopeful residents.

Travel trends and predictions. Debate on the future of sustainable tourism; a vision fo... - 0 views

  • If I walked into a high street travel agent today, the first question I would be asked is 'Where do you want to go?' I've always thought that this was the wrong question: it isn't the 'where' that's important, it's the 'why' and the 'how'. I want to go on holiday to re-charge my batteries or to reconnect with myself. Sometimes I want to meet new people or to discover and learn about another place and another culture. When deciding what my next holiday will be, I try to place the focus more on what I need from the holiday and what I can give back to destinations and local people.
  • This new way of travelling could be described as 'deep' travel.
  • Tourism will no longer be dominated by Westerners either. We'll see residents of India and China becoming more mobile than ever before from a leisure perspective.

  • By 2020, we'll also see the majority of hotels getting their produce, employees, materials, services and the like from sources within their immediate vicinity. I refer to this as 'hyper-local' sourcing.

This article is based on the new trend of traveling & what the travel agents need to stay aware of. Climate change and global warming is on the rise and the majority of the people are starting to make a change. Yes, people are switching vehicles to fuel efficient but are starting to recycle a lot more but people are also changing their traveling motives. Instead of spending a week in the sun at a luxury resort, travelers are wanting more of a cultural experience and yearning to learn about other ways of life. There is a shift in activities which people are starting to take up. A more personal and low key tour of a family or small village is the ideal excursion now. Travelers are also taking into account the carbon emissions they are producing while traveling to their destination. Traveling by train or boat is making a come back instead of flying or driving.

Priorities, focus shift as ecommerce evolves - 0 views

Today's online space is more complex and more fragmented. There is a tremendous amount of growth in the mobile research and booking space, which in turn is leading to shortening booking windows. The rise in importance of the mobile channel garnered much attention at PhoCusWright. There are OTAs that are helping solve a problem hoteliers could not do on their own and there are OTAs that are maliciously attacking hotel revenue with large margins. Search-engine marketing, particularly with new parameters introduced by Google, is making it harder to promote and sell hotel rooms.
