  • As the industry looks to rebound, hotel owners, in particular, are introducing new solutions and services to entice guests, including embracing automation, a once taboo term in an industry used to thinking of service in a very human-centric way. The industry has its back against the wall, forcing change and innovative new thinking to adapt and entice guests back as travel resume
  •
Before the pandemic hotels were using apps to allow guests to view hotels in their area and book hotels from the comfort of their phone. These apps also had incentives to make customers want to book through the app, now that the pandemic has caused individuals to not be able to be in contact as much, the hotels have taken advantage of these apps to allow guest to do more. Guests are now able to check in through these apps, open the door to their room without needing a key, ordering room service and towels and other toiletries through the app as well. The pandemic forced a lot of companies within the hospitality and tourism sector to become more technology friendly in the sense that they wanted less person-to-person contact, for the safety of external guests and internal guests. Like mentioned in the article smart devices have more of an influence on the guests experience overall, the article mentioned how hotels are using robots to clean rooms, deliver room service and toiletries to guest to increase social distancing standards within the properties. Hospitality was once known as an experience only able to be best delivered by humans but now it is an experience through technology that brings comfort to guests.
  •
To provide safer environments to guests and avoid going out of business, hotels had to quickly adopt changes and innovations. Although the industry has heavily relied on human interaction for all customer service aspects, smart technology and automation has been crucial for hotels. In many hotels, all guests need is their smartphone to check-in and get in to their rooms. Marketing has changed and many hotels rooms now feature workstations and gym equipment to ease guests travel concerns.

OPEX or CAPEX for your IT Investment? | TOUGHBOOK Blog - 0 views

  • The “as-a-service” approach also has other benefits when it comes to flexibility. It’s much easier for a business to scale up and down as required. For example, adding new devices and services on a monthly basis or removing them. This flexibility ensures the business only pays for what it needs at the time, rather than having additional tech that is no longer required gathering dust in the warehouse.

This approach is more beneficial for smaller companies, as many times they do not have the money to invest in these capital expenditures all upfront. This article explained the relation between Capital Expenditures vs Operational Expenditures as it relates to technology. This article explained how more companies have been taking the operational approach versus the capital approach because technology does not last forever. Almost every 3-5 years companies have to change their technology to stay up-to-date and efficient with their software and devices. Capital expenditures require all of the money upfront while operational expenditures is money spent as it comes in, like utilities, rent and other monthly or quarterly services.
  • Traditionally, if a business wanted to invest in IT equipment, such as new laptops or PCs, they would pay for their technology upfront as a capital expenditure (CAPEX).

  • To help affected human bar staff do just this it launched an initiative in the US in 2019, whereby for each sale of one of its units it would give a barman or woman $1,000 (£747) towards helping them retrain.
  • "Robots will not replace traditional [human-staffed] bars," says Jan Hiersemenzel, the head of marketing for Swiss firm F&P Robotics, which makes a robot bar server called Barney Bar

  • The company says that each unit can be filled with 70 litres of different types of spirits, and that it can serve up to 120 cocktails per hour.

Why You Need A Travel Agent Now More Than Ever - 0 views

  • There are a ton of reasons to use a travel advisor at any time, but even more today in a chaotic world of uncertainty, cancellations, fast evolving border rules and last-minute changes. But at the end of the day, the best reason of all is because you will have a better trip, and that’s why you travel in the first place. Again, words I wrote years ago here at Forbes still ring true: “They know more than you do, they are better connected, they have access to benefits you can’t get yourself, and they can match and often beat any prices you find. They plan a better trip and then provide a safety net. Having a top travel agent can make you an instant VIP, certainly will save you time and hassle, and quite possibly money.”
  •
Travel advisors are more important than ever for a successful trip. Such advantages like priceless advise on your destination. The advisor becomes an advocate on your travel and time. This is especially helpful for delayed flights and cancelations. They will make adjustments as these unexpected snags can happen during a trip and most of all, they can save you money.

POV: IHG's Recent Data Breach Wasn't Due to a Weak Password | Hospitality Technology - 0 views

Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with novel schemes to kidnap their victims. A recent cyberattack on a five-star resort should act as a cautionary tale for your company. In Oregon, the Allison Inn & Spa recently became the target of a ransomware assault that revealed the personal data of its staff and visitors. The stolen data was published in easily accessible form on the public internet and includes details from 1,500 employees and more than 2,500 guests, including dates of the guests' hotel stays as well as employee birthdays, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers. The "dark web" is typically the only place where stolen private information like this is released, making it harder to find through regular online searches. The goal of the cybercriminals was to coerce the company into paying a ransom. The public disclosure of the private visitor and staff information seems to have been an "experiment" to see if it would increase pressure on the company to pay the ransom. Cybercriminals may use this new strategy frequently in the future to demand ransom from their victims. The implementation of thorough cybersecurity risk management procedures should be considered by resorts. In the event of a cybersecurity attack, determine which systems were affected by the attack and immediately isolate them. Then, prioritize those systems for restoration and recovery. After which, involve internal and external stakeholders and retain legal counsel for advice. It is crucial that you hire a third-party incident response provider and notify law enforcement. Multifactor authentication should be used by businesses to protect network access, and they should also annually train all staff in cybersecurity best practices and keep offline encrypted backups of all internal data.

  • Like many of the other technology trends in the hospitality industry, investing in a check-in/cocierge app requires a small initial investment and can lead to greater efficiency and savings as hotel staff are able to focus on customer service
  • Communication between NFC devices can transfer data at up to 424 kbits/second and the communication is enabled when two devices touch each other,
  • This technology is also ideal for self check-ins by guests at hotels as well as the next trend in this article: smart room keys.
  • Some hotels are already offering more futuristic experiences, with robots delivering any items ordered through room service to a guest’s door
  • nfrared scanners are now also used to minimise disruptions relating to housekeeping (which is a common complaint from customers). Instead of hanging a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on doors or having cleaning staff wake up traveling guests with knocks and phone calls, hotel staff can take a more innovative approach by using infrared scanners that will detect body heat within a room and tell cleaning staff that they should rather come back later if the room is currently occupied.
  • Hotels will increasingly install smart room access systems that allow guests to unlock their doors by simply swiping their phones across a keyless pad on the door.
  • While hotels want to be able to offer digital content, they don’t necessarily want to invest in IT infrastructure and IT staff, making cloud computing the ideal solution.
  • Many companies in the hospitality industry are already using social media to their advantage as guests check-in on location-based social media apps,
  • Converged LANs to support multiple services
  • Marketing, management and hotel developers can no longer work in silos and these technology trends are giving them the opportunities, tools and solutions they need to create memorable experiences that can lead to positive change

Airbnb is out, new disruptors are in | Hotel Management - 1 views

  • At first blush, it may seem that Sorenson was calling out the likes of Airbnb, a common target blamed for poaching travelers seeking hotels. However, this is not the case. Instead, Sorenson said it is the likes of Google, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba that have captured his attention.

  • . Instead, Sorenson said it is the likes of Google, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba that have captured his attention.
  • “They are all trying to have a profile for every customer, so how do we use that to make sure we are monetizing as much of that relationship as we can?
  • If companies such as Google, Amazon or Facebook make a push into the hospitality business, there is no doubt that the level of disruption on the current business environment would be staggering.
  • Getting to know your customers and what they value is something that Amazon, Google and Facebook have mastered
  • According to Nassetta, hotels and hotel operators are masters of their environments. If they fail to capture guest attention, it is no one’s fault but their own.

While Airbnb is still one of the larger competitors the hotel industry is up against, at the NYU Hospitality Conference, a new possible disruptor was brought into question. Speakers began to discuss the possible disruption that online services like Google and Amazon to name a few. The advantages that these companies have, should they dive into the realm of hospitality, is the sheer amount of information that these sites contain about the consumer. Although they have this extensive data, they are lacking in interpersonal experience as these companies don't deal with the consumer physically. The hotel industry however, leads far ahead of these companies in this regard, as it's what they've been known for. However, for the hotel industry to ultimately come out on top, they will need to partner with these companies and work together, rather than be taken down.

What role cloud computing is playing in the evolution of the hotel industry? - 2 views

  • What role cloud computing is playing in the evolution of the hotel industry?
  • Preparation starts when guests interact
  • Cloud services collect data from the moment a customer interacts with a company or service. For example, the hotel can keep track of which services or rooms the customer viewed and make recommendations for upgrades.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • information provides insight into customer preferences
  • Personalization continues with upsell offers that appear as the customer interacts with the company.
  • The cloud not only enables a frictionless checkout experience with no surprises, but it can also follow up afterward to nurture relationships and reward loyalty.
  • Benefits of Cloud Computing
  • Cloud computing provides several advantages over traditional computing:
  • Avoids costly and painful installationsRequires minimal upfront investmentAllows software companies to focus resources on R&D/innovationEliminates negative depreciation (in fact, the software gets better with age, since updates can be made at any time) Offers the ability to cancel at any time. Apart from that, it has lower switching costs for buyers.Pushes software companies to consistently earn customer loyalty with innovation and great service.Eliminates the chances of tasks being derailed because operating the job is possible from anywhere at any time.Relive the risk of unsecured information.
  • Build responsive infrastructure
  • Disruption can have far-reaching consequences. Suppose organizations need to work remotely, shut down or open up certain operations, change supply lines or alter operations in any way. In that case, cloud services allow a smooth transition with a central line of communication.

This post helped me better understand cloud computing and the benefits associated with doing so through an industry-focused lens.
  •
Cloud computing continues to transform the hotel industry by providing the opportunity to reduce cost, improve experiences, build responsive infrastructure and personalize guest offers. Cloud-based software can save the industry money and seamlessly implement a new system without the lengthy installation process. A great way to meet hotel objectives and increase guest experience.

Cloud computing contributes to many different factors in hospitality. From the moment the guests arrive cloud computing is already playing a role in providing a better experience. By saving guest information and make it readily available to all members of staff, personalization is provided form the start. Cloud computing will also keep previous stay information which allows employees to see customer preferences. "Predictive maintenance can handle by cloud computing to reduce downtime, especially during peak seasons. The cloud offers a true end-to-end solution for hospitality, restoring the thrill of travel."

7 Reasons Why You Should Move from On-Premise to Cloud Computing - IBIS Technology - 1 views

  •
Cloud computing allows you to store and access files via the internet rather than the computer's hard drive. Switching to this system saves on costs, extra security measures, and connection and access issues you may be experiencing when working remotely. Data loss is always a risk when your files are stored in a place with only one access point, with cloud computing the files are stored on the internet making it more secure. Cloud computing also allows you to easily work with others in different departments or offices altogether since the files can be shared and accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

There is a lot more to the cloud than I thought. As an owner of a macbook i do store lots of things on the "cloud" but I can't help to feel like not being able to physically touch something that has my files, like a hard drive..is real. I know it is but maybe I'm just real old school. I think I need to start trusting the cloud more, especially this day in age.

Cloud computing is the delivery of services through the internet with the use of a cloud based remote database. Cloud computing helps businesses with cost savings, productivity, speed, efficiency, performance, and security. There are different types of clouds which include public clouds, private clouds, and hybrid clouds. In addition, there are also three services in cloud computing which are; software-as-a-service which provides the user with a pay as you go model, infrastructure-as-a-service, which provides the user with services via IP addresses, and platform-as-a-service which is a platform delivered via the internet. There are both pros and cons when it comes to cloud computing. Some pros include the ability to use the software from any device, cost savings, and storage utility. On the other hand, some cons include security concerns, internal bugs, and power outages.

I also read this article just for a better understanding of the cloud and to really dive deep into the good and the bad, because as we know you can't have the good without the bad. I didn't realize the many different types of cloud computing so that was interesting to read.

Hello Alejandra, This is another great article that you have posted, thank you! Although I have been doing a lot of reading this week on Cloud Computing, I was truly enlightened by some of the information in this post; for example, Cloud Computing offers both public and private services, coupled with a Hybrid option that allows more flexibility and helps optimize the user's infrastructure and security. Further, creating and testing apps, and audio and video streaming were highlighted in this article, unlike others that I have read. Moreover, it broke down the functions of the components of the system (SaaS), infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), and platform-as-a-service (PaaS). Equally, some disadvantages stood out to me, like if the encryption key is lost, the data disappears. The geographical reach of cloud computing cuts both ways: A blackout in California could paralyze users in New York, and a firm in Texas could lose its data if something causes its Maine-based provider to crash. Additionally, with many individuals accessing and manipulating information through a single portal, inadvertent mistakes can transfer across an entire system. In closing, I have noticed that overall the benefits of Cloud Computing can tremendously assist companies in many ways, but some of the disadvantages can have a catastrophic impact on businesses and their operations.
