No fair! Why your brain hates inequities - Behavior- msnbc.com - 0 views

  • people prefer a level playing field,
  • Our study shows that the brain doesn’t just reflect self-interested goals, but instead, these basic reward processing regions of the brain seem to be affected by social information
  • humans are attuned to inequality, and we just don't like it.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The researchers monitored signals in the striatum and prefrontal cortex , parts of the brain thought to be involved in how people evaluate rewards. They found that the brain activity in these areas was greater for the "rich" subjects when money was transferred to the other player than to themselves, whereas the "poor" subjects' brains showed the opposite pattern
  • n other words, everyone seemed to prefer a financial equality.
  • these regions were responding most when the outcome would be the most fair,
  •
research shows that people prefer equity in situations. fairness affects one's emotions about a situation

When drive becomes overdrive | LinkedIn | Daniel Goleman - 0 views

A timely reminder for educators who are seeking to motivate students. I seem to recall the center of 'Flow' to be focused on happiness so if this excessive motivation to do well comes at the expense of one's health, then perhaps it's good to take some time to reflect on what the real benefit is. Thanks for sharing Kasthuri!

Cathy Davidson reflects on the recent Harvard Innovations in Learning and Teaching (HILT) symposium (wish I had been there) and shines light on the value of badges [peer rewards/extrinsic] vs. multiple-choice tests [often a disincentive to learning].

Game-Based Learning - Without Video Games | MindShift - 2 views

  •
An interesting article on game play in the classroom...students take on the role of a video game character and act the part during game performances!
  •
If you look at it as 'play' instead of 'game' I think it opens a whole range of possibilities. Which is not surprising. As young children, we learned through play, often elaborate role-play.

Teens prefer reading news online to Twitter | Media | guardian.co.uk - 0 views

  • Some 62% of US internet users aged 12 to 17 are going online for news and political information or find out about current events
  • the decline in blogging among teens and young adults is striking as it looks like the youth may be exchanging "macro-blogging" for microblogging with status updates.
  •
I would be interested to see why teens are looking at news online. My skeptical side wonders if teens are going online for news and political information as a result of assignments and homework and if these stats simply reflect their tendency to turn more and more to digital technologies, neglecting print sources.
