This SOB used Facebook to explain his reasons for taking his son's and his own life. Make no mistake this guy has some serious issues. Still, it is noteworthy that Facebook and other social media outlets (youtube, flickr) have been used by the public and authorities to intervene and prosecute people that broadcast their criminal actions and intent. Think about it, George Orwell's vision of the future had the authorities constantly policing and monitoring citezens, but this has not been the case. Instead, we the people, ourselves are the ones monitoring each other via ubiquitous content creation and social media sharing.

I've been doing a ton of reading on visitor engagement and learning in museums for work, and I think this framework is a nice lens for beginning to think about the how, the what, and the why. It's a little shallow, but a good initial conversation starter. "Most people believe that digital media can benefit their organisations, but when it comes to using these tools, even the biggest, tech savy museums and galleries can struggle to know where to start. The Digital Engagement Framework was developed by Jasper Visser and myself as a simple to use roadmap to help the sector to approach digital media in a more strategic manner."

I've downloaded the report and can tell that with sentences like, "The results highlight the different pedagogical roles of social software: communication, nurturing creativity and innovation, and collaborative learning," you've definitely found great resources. ~ Leslie

This is one of the premier resource sites containing links to rich media for educational applications. I have yet to see the notion of games or simulations mentioned in the literature as a rich media source, or "learning object" for curriculum integration.

Will great professors start defecting to interactive media, where they could become media stars? I wonder how truly interactive or engaging this type of delivery is.

What happens when everything can be made engaging, instantly?

I read the UMass study that it references (average time to wait for a page to load is ~2 sec) when it came out and initially found it surprising, but after paying closer attention to my internet habits, I realized that I, too, am quite impatient!!

I do feel media can be viewed as a reward because of the high levels of enjoyment and engagement when one consumes media. That is why it is so 'gratifying' and we end up constantly yearning for it unless we train ourselves to observe our media consumption patterns. It is important to monitor these patterns.

Two faculty members test out social media (Twitter and Google+) in the classroom. They evaluate the pros/cons of using these technologies, admittedly not knowing if/how it affects learning outcomes yet.

Once again, people are approaching social media as a cute distraction and not a powerful data minin tool. I purposefully keep my bday and other info wrong. A) I get to see who of my 'friends' knows me well enoughto notice and B) ...I like to keep the creepers guessing. Too engaged in digital media? Not engaged with humankind? Here is a national unplug day invite. March 20th people all over the world will be quiting their phones,computers or whatever other device of choice keeps them from spending time interacting with other humans and enjoying the analog beauty that is all around us.

I can't do this and I'm pretty old! Can't imagine young people being able to.
