The elderly begin to withdraw from activities they love because of an illness, for example. Little by little, they lose their independence and remove themselves from social networks. How this influenced my thinking:It's is sad to think that some elderly will withdraw themselves from society when they lose independence. It is important that as family, we keep in touch with our elderly family members and keep them as close to society as possible. Whether it be taking them to the park, grocery store, or just talking to them on a daily basis. Credibility of source: Seems credible. It includes all its sources.

Provides each cultures beliefs and history of beliefs regarding childbirth and customs for it. How This Influenced My Thinking: Informed me of other perceptions and views of childbirth--things I was unaware of; I was not familiar with any other views of childbirth but that of the U.S.'s. Credibility of Source: Unsure of credibility.

Title: The Do's and Don'ts of Divorce for Parents Author: James Lehman, MSW Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This goes over how to handle discussing divorce with children, what might be expected. and how to react to children's behaviour. Gives a list of what to try to do, and what to avoid. How this Influenced my Thinking: This showed me that there are multiple reasons for divorce, and how children usually feel fear when they dont know what will be happening to their family. this also showed me that family divorce counseling might not always be favorable. Credibility: Empowering Parents website that won an iParenting media award. ideas, not straight facts.

Title: Refective Judgement Author: Source : King, P.M. & Kitchener, K.S. (1994). Developing Reflective Judgment. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, pp. 14-16. Date published: 1994 Why Relevant and Summary: This site gives a breakdown of the stages in reflective thinking. Along with the breakdown it gave clear examples of how someone in each of the different stages would react which helped me relate the stages to situations. This gave me a better understanding of each of the stages. It was helpful in writing my paper. How This Influenced My Thinking: The examples that are given are short statements that provide excellent examples of what they described in each stage explanation. Credibility of Source: seems reliable-but no proof that it is legitimate

Asher Date Published: 1993 Why Relevant and Summary: Examines in depth the variances, fluctuation, and observed tendencies of friendship formation and maintenance during middle childhood. Examines psychological elements to the presence of friendship during middle childhood and the effect it has on the individual's overall well-being. How This Influenced My Thinking: Called me to evaluate my own experience with friendship when I was going through middle childhood. Was relatable and answered a few questions or examined a few ideas I had held onto about the topic. Credibility of Source: Published by the American Psychological Association

Author: Cristen Conger Date Published: April 7th, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: It details the disengagement theory and discusses how the study that produced this theory began and how the scholarly community regarded this theory. It also briefly compares it to other theories of aging that eventually developed. How This Influenced My Thinking: It gave a nice background to how the Disengagement Theory came about. It also is a good reminder that theories can become outdated. Just because a popular opinion is also a theory, it does not necessarily make it factual or "right." Credibility of Source: OK. Title: What Is Disengagement Theory? Author: Cristen Conger Date Published: April 7, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Thoroughly explains the Disengagement Theory; identifies the positive and negative opinions of it and how it affects multiple relationships in the life of an elderly individual. Provides scenarios with which to examine the Disengagement Theory; enabled me to understand the effects it had on the elderly individual. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to compare and contrast it to a very opposite theory in successful aging, the Activity Theory. It forced me to think of ways in which the Disengagement Theory could have positive outcomes and influences on an elderly individual and their surrounding environment. Credibility of Source: Through Discovery Health, seems fairly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Lots of great statistics about how the sandwich generation is affected by economics Credibility of Source: Really credible - well written and sourced

Title: The Development of Self-Esteem Author: Sue and Jo Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This is a straightforward summary of a child's cognitive development of self-esteem. Although it doesn't include many details of what contributes to a child's self-esteem it does clearly define what its makeup is. How This Influenced My Thinking: This was interesting to me because it summed up the definition of self-esteem in a nutshell. I am personally interested in how to promote a healthy self-esteem in children but this website gives a good foundation for the outline of what self-esteem is and what factors affect it. Credibility of Source: It looks like it's some sort of personal website; however, it does cite studies and seems to back up its statements with scientific data.

Title: Importance of prenatal sound and music Author: Giselle E Whitwell Date Published: It doesn't say Why Relevant and Summary: This was an amazing article! It was talking about the sound decibel of conversations or music outside of the womb. She goes to talking about how a baby might respond when the mother is in a certain environment and sometimes, what the effects may be after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: While some of this is common knowledge, I never really knew or understood the importance of sound and how detrimental it can be in later stages of childhood. I see it now in my own children. I played a lot of music when I was pregnant and my kids love listening to it and dancing to it. Sometimes, you just don't think about these things. Credibility of Source: It's posted on an Association of Prenatal and Health. I don't think they would give false information.

Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).
