It goes into detail on the consequences of starting puberty at a young age, such as engaging in risky behavior and in growth problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: This website definitely made me aware of how children as young as seven are starting puberty. As a kid one usually looks up to kids who have a deep voice or girls who develop breast early, and this website made me realize that those kids whom everyone admires, are at risk of having health problems later on in life. Credibility of Source: This website seems to be credible because it does give a lot of information about kids health, and it was also reviewed by a M.D.

Date Published: July 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is persuading people and trying to inform everyone the importance in breastfeeding. Basically, explaining that women should be able to breastfeed where ever and whenever they want and need too without people thinking it's bad or in a sexual manner. How This Influenced My Thinking: I now think that women should be allowed to breastfeed where ever and whenever because it is a statement and it is natural. Credibility of Source: Credible. Title: Guided Participation Author: Zeynep Isik-Ercan & Susan Golbeck - The Gale Group Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant & Summary: Not only explains what Guided Participation is, but also it's roots from both Vygotsky & Barbara Rogoff from her book "Apprenticeship in Thinking." How This Influenced My Thinking: It elaborated upon the information from the textbook, explained how social interaction plays a role in cognitive development, and the origins of the guided participation concept. Credibility of Source: Great - lots of references at the bottom of this article.

The article talks about how guided participation helps the child to achieve their goals. How this influenced my thinking: Helps me to realize the method of teaching I can do for my children so they will teach others the same way. Credibility of Source: There is a bibliography at the end to cite their sources that are equivalent to the sources of theory used.

Why Relevant and Summary: This covers the basics of what temperament is, and how to tell what temperament a child might fall under. It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. DVD Author: power-babies-youtube video Date: March 24, 2011 Why relevant and summary:The process of habituation is very crucial to our cognitive development and ability to function in the world. This clip shows the activity how it is performed and how the data is collected and the graph plotted. I think it is very interesting watching what we learn how it is actually done in practice and also how it occurs naturally. How this influenced my thinking: It has made my belief stronger on the ability our children have to perform cognitive tasks at a much earlier age than previously thought. This goes into the discussion of cognition and toys and how infants learn from their environment. Children make schemas, how we organize and process information, in order to make sense of things. However, for children, assimilation and accomodation are necessary since they are constantly learning and can confuse things. How This Influenced My Thinking:Schemas are a good learning tool, but can also make learning difficult. It is important to be open minded in order to take in new information. It compares the obesity percentage of today's children with those of twenty years ago. It also gives a brief summary of how to deal with children who have obesity, and even includes a meal plan. How this influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in the fact that I always thought that putting an obese child on a diet was the best solution, but this site mentions that one must not completely change their diets because they do need foods from different groups because they need it to grow. Credibility: This website seems credible since its from the government.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I have always thought that no matter what the parents do the children involved in divorces will feel the repercussions and that there is nothing that parents can do to fix it. This false belief that I have had is untrue-many children that are provided stable,secure, and loving homes after divorce learn to cope and turn out to be just fine. It talks about menarche, getting enough sleep, sexuality, dealing with dating etc. Most importantly, the website talks about protecting yourself, if your sexually active and how important it is to seek medical care such as seeing a gynocologist. How This Influenced My Thinking: I think it is great that this information is presented appropriately for young girls to utilize and educate themselves on what is going on within their bodies as well as reassuring them that this is all normal and happens to all of us. I'm glad that this information is readily available to girls that perhaps do not have relationships with their parents to discuss these topics. Title: How Does Religion Affect the Lives of Adolescents? Date: 11-30-2005 Author: Jennifer Elliot Summary and why important: This was an excellent article about religion and adolescence. It was well written, had great sources, it taped onto this issue from all the sides. It talked about the media's influence, how recent religious scandal might or have affected faith in our young generation and it explained that religion is one of the factors that influences adolescents to make the right choices and not the only one. How it has change my thinking: I liked this article because it seemed impartial, it did not glorify or vilify those who practice religion and those who do not. It was realistic, it explained some great concepts, and everything was backed by research.
