The main focus is on child and adolescent development. It compares Urie's model to other theoris of development. This is a great starting point if you want to learn about Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Kohlberg and Urie Bronfenbrenner. How This Influenced My Thinking: From this model I understood that how a child develops is influenced from the systems in the child's life. However, when taking microsystem into consideration and the important people in the child's life, the way the child acts towards the microsystem (people) also influences how those people will act towards the child. How This Influenced My Thinking:  Brain development greatly influences me and I am always looking for information that I can put into practice. Why Relevant and Summary: This covers the basics of what temperament is, and how to tell what temperament a child might fall under. It describes the different traits of temperament and how to react to them. How this Influenced my Thinking: I wasn't aware of how many various traits a child can have that can determine their temperament, i generally believed you either had a well-behaved child, or a fussy child. This gives more dimension to temperament and shows how there are varying levels to a temperament as well. Credibility of Source: Has references; linked to Ohio State University; somewhat dated information, but information that is still relevant.

Title: Social Intelligence for Toddlers Author: Dr. Laura Markham Date Published: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This site is relevant because it gives tips on how to handle toddlers in social interactions, and how to help them interact well with others, and understand to not only understand their own emotions, but the emotions of others as well. How this Influenced my Thinking: This showed me just how important it is to communicate with children about their feelings, and how to help them understand them. It showed me it is important to be calm and discuss what is going on, instead of simply reacting to a situation. Credibility of Source: Degree aquired by author, found on ahaparenting.com, a website for parent to seek helpful and beneficial tips and lessons on raising kids.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This articles identified the importance of communicating and intervening with your child to help develop social skills and the importance of knowing how your child feels, and helping your child understand other peoples feelings. Credibility of Source: The author is a doctor.

Title: What Influences Child Development? Author: Chaplinspeaks Date Published: March 24, 2012 Why relevant and Summary: While not necessarily referring to Bronfenbrenner's model specifically, she hit all of the same points as used in his model. She went into much more depth explaining not only the influences but also why it is likely to influence a child's development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article didn't influence my thinking one way or another, because I found the same information in our textbook, but it did help me to understand the model in more depth because she thoroughly explained everything. Credibility of Source: I feel like this source is very credible. She has a MSW and seems to be very knowledgable and has done her research.

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave clear and concise information as to what development is occurring and at what age. Title: Parenting -Child Development Prenatal Care and Development Author: Healthline Date Published: 2010 Why relevant and summary: This website is relevant in that it talks about the signs on how to determine whether one is pregnant and what to do after. This website continues by describing the stages of development and what to expect when expecting. It ends by discussing the importance of healthcare all around from environment to doctors visits. How this influenced my thinking: I was able to learn a little more on why it is imperative to consider all the different possibilities when having a child and how it is crucial that one sustains a healthy condition throughout their pregnancy in order to give their child the best outcome possible. Title: Helping kids cope with seperation and divorce Author: Jocelyn Block Date Published: Nov 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is a parents guide to supporting children during divorce. It describes the needs and expectations needed for healthy coping through divorce. Children need reassurance, stability, patience, and love even more during a divorce. Keeping these important staples intact will help the child deal with divorce. It discusses how kids are going to express their feelings and red flags for more serious problems developing due to divorce. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have always thought that no matter what the parents do the children involved in divorces will feel the repercussions and that there is nothing that parents can do to fix it. This false belief that I have had is untrue-many children that are provided stable,secure, and loving homes after divorce learn to cope and turn out to be just fine. But it is all dependent on the parents methods of making the divorce less traumatic for the child. Credibility of Source: Its credible- the authors are doctors.

It was put in a clear concise way with explainations How This Influenced My Thinking: I was a child of divorce, but at an age where it wasn't as impactful. It was interesting to see what my parents did right and wrong. Credibility of Source: Written by MA's and a PhD-High

The article gives detailed tips in how to help your children cope with a divorce. How This Influenced My Thinking:This helped me understand why it is need to focus on the children during a divorce proceeding and how divorce can effect a child. Credibility of Source: very reliable source the authors have M.A's and Ph.D's.

It not only provides you with a definition of each term, but also gives you information on Vygotsky, and provides you with sample learning scenarios that help you to better understand his theory. how this influenced my thinking- This webpage gave me insight on what are good ways of teaching someone a new task. It helped me to better understand why a child would have trouble learning a new task, and what can be done to help them achieve their goal. credibility of source- credible with many sources

Title: Social Emotional Development: 24-36 months Author: No author Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This is an accessible guide for parents of two year olds to learn ways to help their toddler understand his feelings, encourage early friendships, letting the child lead in play, and supporting older toddlers' developing skills, as well as helping the child learn to resolve conflict in healthy ways, understand reasons for limits/request, use language to communicate needs. How this influenced my thinking: As a mother of two children (fairly recently out of the toddler stage) this gave me quite a bit to reflect on as far as my own parenting and how I can make improvements going forward should I ever have more children, and it would likely influence any advice I may give out to parents of toddlers. Credibility of Source: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families is an organization dedicated to healthy child development, so this publication is likely backed by solid research.

Breus Date Published: August 17, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article offers a study doing on a variety of lower class cultures and their children whom have co-slept with there parents. The researcher test their cognitive skills and behavior development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influence my way of thinking that bonding can happen even while sleeping. Credibility of Source: the article was written by an author with a Ph.D and was found on Psychology Today.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me better understand what temperament in a child can influence development. Credibility of Source: Credible, the article by Dr. Meyers seemed to be thoroughly researched and well written in a way that was reader friendly.

The article discusses the ways that babies begin to understand and categorize words long before a child actually verbalizes. It touches base on the way that adults interact with babies/infants greatly aids language development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This did not influence my thinking but gave me better understanding of how language development begins with categorization. Credibility of Source:This is a credible source. It is a write up of the extensive research done by Dr. Marianella Casasola and Associate Professor of Human Development at Cornell University.

Title: Lev Vygotsky Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: Talks about Vygotsky and the theories that he created. It also has a good comparison between Vygotsky and Piaget. How This Influenced My Thinking: It was good additional material that went more in depth on the topic, and had some information that the textbook did not cover. Credibility of Source: Good - the author is a professor at Wigan and Leigh college.

The effects of Vygotsky's theory is presented and there is also a video that talks about the differences of both theories. How this influenced my thinking: I used to think that there was only one way to parent and what worked for one child would work for all but this showed me that by understanding your child's temperament you can develop a much more effective way to parent.
