Title: White Paper: Teaching in the Zone Author: Angela Lui Date published: 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This paper goes into amazing depth about zone proximal development as well as scaffolding. It doesn't give a generic textbook definition, but rather puts it into terms that are not only interesting but easy to understand. How this influenced my thinking: It allowed to be better understand what the textbook had already explained. I was able to see real life examples of these definitions. Credibility of source: Very credible, there were tons of references and the author appears to have done extensive research prior to writing this.

Title: Understanding Temperament in Infants and Toddlers Author: Lindsey T. Allard and Amy Hunter Date published: N.D. Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives a good description of the different temperaments and different parenting skills you could use based on the temperament. How this influenced my thinking: I used to think that there was only one way to parent and what worked for one child would work for all but this showed me that by understanding your child's temperament you can develop a much more effective way to parent. Credibility of source: Seems credible, a lot of references.

As well it gives examples and defines what goodness-of-fit is. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article gave be better understanding of what temperament is and goodness-of-fit. The article also gave me understanding on how an environment can effect a infant or toddler's temperament. Credibility of Source: This material was developed by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning with federal funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families.

Title: Social Emotional Development: 24-36 months Author: No author Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This is an accessible guide for parents of two year olds to learn ways to help their toddler understand his feelings, encourage early friendships, letting the child lead in play, and supporting older toddlers' developing skills, as well as helping the child learn to resolve conflict in healthy ways, understand reasons for limits/request, use language to communicate needs. How this influenced my thinking: As a mother of two children (fairly recently out of the toddler stage) this gave me quite a bit to reflect on as far as my own parenting and how I can make improvements going forward should I ever have more children, and it would likely influence any advice I may give out to parents of toddlers. Credibility of Source: National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families is an organization dedicated to healthy child development, so this publication is likely backed by solid research.

Title: ADHD Overview Author: Jacob Silverman Date Published: No date Why relevant and summary: This is a comprehensive overview of ADHD, the causes, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments and related disorders. There are also a number of other highly relevant articles that are easily accessible on this site. How this influenced my thinking: There is a lot of information about raising a child with ADHD. I've never had experience with this in regards to my own children, but as a former teacher I have been aware of the 'basics' for many years. There is so much to learn and understand on this topic, especially so that caregivers can be more understanding of individualized needs and be less likely to judge or treat children with ADHD differently. Credibility of source: This is a Discovery Health article. It may not be highly credible in it's own right, but likely pulled it's information from scholarly/medical/research based resources.

(2009) Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Gives clear detail by people who stay on top of current research on the best way to nurture babies How This Influenced My Thinking: I think everyone should do everything possible to put infants in constant contact with their mom's for as long as possible to develop loving secure people capable of mature relationships. Credibility of Source: The people on the board have very good creditials.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It makes me think that ADHD is way more common than I realized. Credibility of Source :It is a credible source- it comes from The University of Maryland Medical Center. Has many repitable sources listed.

How This Influenced My Thinking: There's so much information on ADHD, and helpful links and material to help people that may have ADHD. Credibility of Source: It seems credible, and all the links have authors and dates on them as well.

Date Published:Jan 6, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives a nice overview of what exactly ADHD (and also ADD) is, what symptoms there are and how to work with it. it also gives interesting facts about how long it may have been around, and how many people are diagnosed with it. How this Influenced my Thinking; This just gave me a few extra bits of information about ADHD and its history, i am already familiar with it, as i have a younger brother who was diagnosed with it. Credibility of Source: The authors have degrees, and it is on a credible website about many varying aspects of psychology.

How it Influenced my Thinking: I was really surprised by the number of children in america that have ADHD. It says on average one student in each classroom will have it. Credibility of Source: Seems like a very credible source.

How This Influenced My Thinking: The up-to-date research regarding the history, treatments, and causes of ADHD of this site have been illuminating and helpful. Credibility of Source: 7- Sources are cited at the bottom of articles, from credible sources.

Title: Nature, Nurture and Attention Deficit Author: ALIYAH BARUCHIN Date Published: 3/12/08 Why Relevant and Summary: I was curious about whether nature or nurture is responsible for ADHD. This article was an interview with Susan Smalley, Ph.D., is a professor in the department of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and director of its Mindful Awareness Research Center. How this influenced my thinking: I was fascinated to find out about some of the environmental factors that show increased lecels of ADHD. Credibility: I'm on the fence. The doctor seems credible, but I am not sure about the writer.

Title: Social Development Author: Growing Miracles Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because it talks about the social development and all the aspects of what a toddler learns in this stage of life. It talks about communicating, sharing, putting the child in home settings and setting limits for the child. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences my thinking because it makes me want to go back to when my children were small so that I can teach them differently than how they were taught. Credibility of Source: I think it's credible because even though it was reprinted with permission, the information is similar to that of research.

Title: Suicidal Thoughts More Common in Kids With Autism: Study Date: 3/21/2013 Author: Amy Norton Why relevant and summary: This article reports on the findings of a scientific study published on the "Research in Autism Spectrum disorders" journal, that children on the spectrum have a higher chance of contemplating or thinking about suicide than their typical peers. This is especially pronounced in those families where the mothers are depressed as well and bulling happens in school. The author reports on both sides which support and are against such findings. How has this changed my thinking: As a mother of a child on the spectrum I am really concerned and interested in finding out how this disorder will affect him, as he grows and what can i do to help. Source credibility: This article was published on an online news magazine and reports findings published in an academic journal.

This site goes into detail of the different parenting styles and gives background examples of child qualities and parenting styles. How This influenced my thinking: This site definitely gave me more insight on the parenting styles Credibility of Source: This site seems credible its from developmental psychology.org

How This Influenced My Thinking: This mademe aware of the different styles and how it could effect children, so it made me know which parenting style I would like to take on. Credibility of Source: This is credible due to the citations and that it comes from an original source document.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped to clarify Baumrind's theory. Credibility of Source: 7- References cited.

Title: Obese Children Twice as Likely to Die Before 55 Author:COURTNEY HUTCHISON and MICHELLE SCHLIEF Date Published: Feb. 11, 2010 Summary/Why Relevant: This article discusses a recent study done on children whom were obese. The stud found that over weight children were put at more risk for more health complications therefore more likely to die before the age of 55. How it influenced my thinking: This article made me more aware of the risk factors that children face when over weight. Credibility: Very. The authors provide citations for the research study as well as other resources.

Title:Co-Sleeping Neither Helps Nor Hurts Child Development Author: Michael J. Breus Date Published: August 17, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article offers a study doing on a variety of lower class cultures and their children whom have co-slept with there parents. The researcher test their cognitive skills and behavior development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influence my way of thinking that bonding can happen even while sleeping. Credibility of Source: the article was written by an author with a Ph.D and was found on Psychology Today.

Title: How Does Religion Affect the Lives of Adolescents? Date: 11-30-2005 Author: Jennifer Elliot Summary and why important: This was an excellent article about religion and adolescence. It was well written, had great sources, it taped onto this issue from all the sides. It talked about the media's influence, how recent religious scandal might or have affected faith in our young generation and it explained that religion is one of the factors that influences adolescents to make the right choices and not the only one. How it has change my thinking: I liked this article because it seemed impartial, it did not glorify or vilify those who practice religion and those who do not. It was realistic, it explained some great concepts, and everything was backed by research. Credibility: the author has a BS in Mass Communication, a BS in Psychology and is a Certified Mental Health Technician. This article was published on yahoo! voices which is a great website with a good reputation.

Title: Kohlberg Author: Saul McLeod Date Published: 2011 Why relevant/summary: This goes over the different levels and stages of kohlberg's moral reasoning theory. Explains an exaple he used for determining moral reasoning (Heinz question). How this influenced my thinking: This further explained what each stage resembles morally. this showed me one of the examples from his research, and how each group resoinded to it. this gave me firther depth into the stages. (at least from another perspective) Credibility: Saul McLeod has written quite a bit of information around psychology and development. Simply Psychology website. has citations and references.

Title- why religion matters author-Patrick F. Fagan date-Jan 25th 1996 why relevant and summary- this site provided many supporting examples as to how religion influences a child's upbringing. This give my paper some depth and intertwined different view points. how this influenced me- i wasn't really influenced by this site because it didn't add anything that i hadn't heard before. It might influence a person more if they are not as familiar with religion, specifically Christianity, as i was. credibility-the site seems pretty credible. It is a .org website, and was written by someone with a PHD in his area of study.
