Title: Peer Relations in Middle Childhood Author: Blume & Zembar Date: n.d. Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains how friendship is important in middle childhood. Whether or not someone likes you or dislikes you can really make or break a person. Friends provide all the needs the one self can use at that time and in the future. For one of them being a need for survival because in middle childhood friendship is based on people liking you which then determines their popularity status. Also discussed in this article is the individual need for success, power, status, approval, autonomy, and etc. It also expresses the concerns of rejection in children at this age and it affects them. How this influenced my thinking: This helped my understanding of why it is important for us to connect with others and increase our social skills. I have found a new understanding of the word friendship from this article. Credibility: Seems credible because they cited quotes.

Zembar Date Published: 2007 Why relevant and summary: great information on research and finding of socialization patterns- shows a strong correlation between playground play and future choices in adult relationships. The habit forming patters of socialization developed at an early age impact how we relate to people as we become older. How this influenced my thinking: I was not aware how big of an impact peer relations/friendships in middle childhood had on adults. Credibility of source: seems very credible. title: 10 Strengths to a happy marriage Author: unknown Date: 2010 Why relevant and summary: I really liked this article it was brief interesting and to the point. It is a reflection on a study conducted on more than 21,000 couples in all the United states and gives 10 easy tips on what to do to improve your marriage and also gives the top 10 reasons that cause problems for a marriage. I think it is an easy piece to read for everyone at every stage of their married life. How it changed my thinking: Most of the tips are common sense that everyone will agree to it but more than often we fail to follow; reading them kind of reinforces their message. Credibility of source: The website "first things first" is a non profit grass roots organization that came to be as a tool to help the residents of Hamilton county , Tennessee. Apparently they have a high divorce rate and other relationship and children rearing issues and this website offers advice, support and education on hoe to deal with family problems on a day to day basis. Dozens of books are written every year about the things that go wrong in marriage. Now one of America's foremost marriage researchers has evaluated the things that go right in marriage. David H. Olson, founder of Life Innovations and one of the creators of the Prepare/Enrich marriage enrichment tools, has surveyed 21,501 married couples in all 50 states to identify the top ten strengths of happy marriages.

Abnormalities are at greater risk of occurring during critical periods of development. This period is highest during the embryonic stage. By gathering research on what affects prenatal development, we can pinpoint when pregnant women are most at risk and the factors, thereby preventing congenital problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: It's very surprising how a span of 6 weeks can have such a life changing impact on a person before they're even born. Title: Babies Seem to Pick Up Language in Utero Author: NICHOLAS BAKALAR Date Published: January 7, 2013 Why Relevant and Summary: This study took place in two different countries, and aim to gather information to prove the hypothesis that memory and language learning starts even during gestation. How This Influenced My Thinking: I already knew about it, but actually having a study to support this claim, made it even more reliable. I think studies like this influence future parents in their quest to stimulate their babies learning in the womb. Credibility of Source: It was publish in the health and science section of the New York Times, and the study is conducted by a University.

Title: Babies Seem to Pick Up Language in Utero Author: Nicholas Bakalar Date: 07 January 2013 Why Relevant and Summary: This article talks about the researches and experiments that are taking place to give people more information on how babies pick up language while still in the womb. Babies hear their mother's voice all the time after about 30 weeks. Once the baby is born he/she knows their mother's voice because it is so familiar. The babies that are involved in the studies have pacifiers that have tape recorders embedded in them to record the sucking noise. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have always heard that it is good for babies to listen to classical music because it increases their learning abilities, but to know that prenatal learning is important and has a positive effect blew my mind. Credibility of Source: Credible, it is from a newspaper, in which the article is peer reviewed and it talks about research.

In this article, Dr. Mercola explains some of the largest factors or early onset of puberty and explains why those things may cause early childhood puberty. How This Influenced My Thinking: This didn't so much influence my thinking as it confirmed my belief that chemicals in the food our children eat may very well play a major role in when they begin puberty. Credibility of Source: I find this article to be highly credible, Dr. Mercola seems to have done extensive research on the topic as well as included the input of other knowledgeable professionals.

Author: Ann Hallemans Date Published: May 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant to the study because it demonstrate a longitudinal study done on infant of the earlier stages of walking. It also provides research done and the methods that were included as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This had influence my way of thinking by now knowing that earlier development is in walking is not only with our nervous system but as well with our mental capability. Credibility of Source: Scholarly article found on EBSCOhost.

Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The journalist and mother expounds upon the different research and studies that give insight into what a fetus experiences and learns in-utero. How This Influenced My Thinking: The last part of this talk discusses the "Hunger Winter" study and how prenatal exposure to famine effected health in adult life, and how 9/11 fetuses of mother who experienced the trauma, had babies with greater susceptibility to PTSD. Credibility of Source: Highly credible with verifiable references

Date Published: Nov. 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: As a science reporter and mother Paul combined her experience as a pregnant woman with her love of research to write about what a fetus is learning in the womb and what a mother teaches through their shared experience. How This Influenced My Thinking: there was a lot of interesting and pertinent information shared within this video. The shared experiences of a mother are vast. A fetus learns from a mother's voice, food preferences, language and culture to environmental events such as famine, war, fear and stress.

It refers to Erikson's theory as well as theorys from Waterman and Van Hoof. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influenced my thinking by introducing me to new identity theories and exploring those theories and ideas more indepth. Credibility of Source: This is a credible source since it has many references to all the information provided and the article tells who the authors are and dates published.

Title: The Latest Science of Nature Versus Nurture Author: Stefan Molyneux Date Published: May 25, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This video is breaks down all factors from genetics to environmental influences that contribute to human development. The video shows the importance of prenatal care to environmental effects on individuals after they have been born. How This Influenced My Thinking: Reviewing this video has really made me think on which plays a bigger role on a person's development. I have come to the conclusion that genetics play the leading role but not by much. The human fetal stage is very fragile and will induce any stress that it has encountered, from emotional stress, to chemical through the actions of the mother. Credibility of Source: Stefan Molyneux who is a radio broadcaster, is really a collector of information rather than a scholarly researcher, who merely reposts other's findings from educated researchers.

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

It gives examples of methods use to deliver a baby. How This Influenced My Thinking: Although i was aware of this form of childbirth method, I was not aware of the terminology that doctors use, and how complex childbirth actually is. It has open my eyes to the variety of methods. Credibility of Source: This source was somewhat credible. This website is useful if wanting to get an overview of the topic or if one is new to topic. This source is a good way to begin with research, however more extensive research should be done.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It helps my thinking because I'm able to see what kind of parenting style I have, what the temperaments of my children are and how I can match them so that my children are succeeding in life. Credibility of Source: I think its credible, a doctor wrote it along with supporting evidence of research.

How This Influenced My Thinking: It helped me better understand what temperament in a child can influence development. Credibility of Source: Credible, the article by Dr. Meyers seemed to be thoroughly researched and well written in a way that was reader friendly.
