Report on the nature of innovation at community colleges. Surveyed leaders and focused on community colleges to understand the innovation process

Global Skills for College Completion (GSCC) deploys an online community of 26 outstanding basic skills faculty in 16 states on 13 campuses to innovate math and writing basic skills pedagogy to consistently increase pass rates to 80%. The project is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the League for Innovation in the Community College in partnership with Knowledge in the Public Interest and LaGuardia Community College in New York.

This issue brief describes how the 15 states participating in the Achieving the Dream project have concentrated their policy efforts on four key areas: preventative strategies, assessment and placement, implementation and evaluation of program innovation,

Developmental Education Initiative Policy Framework for their states. Includes comprehensive framework emphasizing innovation, funding models, early assessment and interventions, benchmarks, performance funding, etc.

Describes Virginia's process of redesigning developmental education across the state's 23 community colleges and 40 campuses. By 2013, developmental math will be taught as a series of nine one-credit modules. Developmental English will be taught as a tiered subject, integrating academic reading and writing. "The Importance of Minority-Serving Institutions January 16, 2012, 7:53 pm By Marybeth Gasman This past week the Institute for Higher Education Policy released a report titled The Role of Minority-Serving Institutions in National College Completion Goals. The report urges the nation to look closely at minority-serving institutions (MSI's) and their work with underrepresented minorities for clues on student learning and student success. It also emphasizes the role of MSI's in educating a disproportionate number of low-income and first-generation students. Nearly 98 percent of the black and Native American students who attend MSI's are eligible for need-based financial aid. Moreover, almost 50 percent of MSI students receive Pell Grants in comparison to all students. These students, according to countless research studies, are some of the most difficult to retain and graduate as they have less access to quality education and opportunities."

This article details the main research and data findings on developmental education. The article touches on innovative approaches at three community colleges. Also, a discussion of program cost and student success situates developmental education in the right policy context.

This forum held by the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) will spotlight community colleges that address the challenges of developmental education and produce best practices for supporting students' progress toward degree completion. The forum will be held Monday December 13th. Speakers Peter Adams and Elaine Baker have worked with ECS and Getting Past Go in the past.

CAI is also driven by the work of the Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, and Science (METS) Coalition, as well as the P-20 Council and the Director of Education and Workforce Innovation. "

This announcement references the University of Phoenix's plan to provide just in time developmental education as part of their online programs.

Examines student performance at the University of Phoenix through several internal and external measures. The report outlines three initiatives, including Just-In-Time Remediation. The University of Phoenix has instituted a program of integrative learning on a gradual plane to provide just-in-time skills. Remediation is provided through online tools and offers study skills support. (University of Phoenix, December 2009)

This could be the next wave in innovation in developmental education. Just in time remediation.

Paper outlining the ways to develop and sustain innovation in "pre-collegiate" or developmental education

Details the tension between institutions developing innovative approaches to assess students and deliver remedial content and state policies that reinforce the traditional course-based design.

From CLASP: Beyond Basic Skills describes strategies that can be used to strengthen connections between basic skills education and postsecondary education to help lower-skilled adults and out-of-school youth attain the postsecondary credentials they need to advance in the labor market. This includes state-level innovations such as: instructional strategies that provide a strong foundation in occupational skills required for jobs in the local economy; acceleration strategies that help students progress further and more quickly in education and training programs in a shorter period of time than traditional approaches, and funding formulas, assessment policies, and other administrative policies that support a statewide vision to provide adults and youth with pathways to better jobs through postsecondary education. The report also includes examples of states and local institutions that are effectively implementing one or more of these innovations.
