This article adresses obesity increasing in the US. It is less current (1999) but still useful facts about the background of over-eating. The chronology is useful to my research. Also the article has good background that I can use in my introduction.

This article deals with substance use among high school students. This sample is used to foreshadow the future college environment. The study shows that alcohol is the most substance consumed by adolescents. Moreover, it explains that white people tend to be heavier drinker compared to others. It also describes the negative effects drinkers believe alcohol has on their school work, family and peer relationships. Although this study deals with high school students, but the latter will soon constitute the new college generation. Therefore, this article helps us understand the drinking background of college students.

Founded in 1996, "Rock the Vote" was launched to boost political participation by using pop musicians, comedians, and other means of popular culture using a three stage strategy, Rock the Vote aimed to raise profile and funds, push voter registration and finally urge those who were registered to vote to use their vote. The article can be helpful to readers by presenting specific details of how "Rock the Vote" gets youth voters involved.

Signal and team explore New Zealand and the low-income inhibiters. This study used focus groups to question 158 shoppers. They concluded that many did not have time to read the labels or did not have the understanding to do so. This study was well organized and had useful conclusions. Also its background was informative, and the study itself added that people of New Zealand lack education to read the nutrition labels, it is not just in the US.

This article addressed the increasing obesity in the US. The article is helpful becuase of its focus of the unhealthy aspects of over-eating. I can use its mention of the food industry seeling high-suger, high-fat foods. This can be useful in my introduction. Also it is current (2003).

This essay is an overview of the theoretical, methodological, pedagogical, ideological, and power-related issues of world Englishes: varieties of English used in diverse sociolinguistic contexts. The scholars in this field have critically examined theoretical and methodological frameworks of language use based on western, essentially monolingual and monocultural, frameworks of linguistic science and replaced them with frameworks that are faithful to multilingualism and language variation. This conceptual shift affords a "pluricentric" view of English, which represents diverse sociolinguistic histories, multicultural identities, multiple norms of use and acquisition, and distinct contexts of function. The implications of this shift for learning and teaching world Englishes are critically reviewed in the final sections of this essay.

This article compares between second-hand effects encountered by people living next to colleges with high levels of binge drinking, and others living next to schools with low levels of binge drinking. It explains that binge drinkers also affect non-binge drinkers and their neighbors. The study is completed using a telephone survey. It shows that as the number of alcohol outlets increases, binge drinking also increases. This also increases the second-hand effects encountered by people living next to colleges. Lastly, it suggests that decreasing the density of alcohol outlets would decrease the consumption of alcohol among college students. This article clearly portrays the second-hand effects of alcohol use. However, it is a limited study since it relies on a telephone survey.

The author states that children instinctively understand music. She believes since both music and reading are im portant that they should be used in combination to teach literacy. Using evidence from the Mozart effect studies, she stress the importance of music in education

This article focuses the decline in reading in this generation. It is a very general topic of literacy and does not focus on nutrition at all. It is useful to me for statistics. Ghislain Savoie speaks about how knowing two languages can give you discipline. He also tells us how knowing a second language can give us the upper hand in getting a job, and also how you get get a job faster, or switch faster if needed.

Oladejo writes this article speaking about foreign language education in Taiwan. It describes that the government is very appalling when it comes to getting input from the public that's concerns determining the language education in Taiwan. The process they use many a times has had complaints, and the public hopes for it to be better. There are many charts that Oladejo adds to his article with results of questionaires sent out to parents. Questionaires conclude many answers that parents have regarding when English should start being taught. The author also uses many other charts to show details in his work, and his article is very well put together.

In this article Pam McCollum discusses two-way bilingual programs and students who study together in two languages. It directly examines how middle school Mexican students that are enrolled in two-way bilingual programs do better in school, and usually use English over their native language of Spanish. The article shows that they analyzed these students very carefully not only in their work, but in informal settings as well. McCollum's article is, at times, a little bit hard to understand, but if read carefully a useful one.

Li explains through this article the importance of parents helping their children when they are part of a language minority. Studies have shown that if children are trying to learn a second language, it is much easier to do so when their parents are using that language as well. This study was done by the author, Xiaoxia Li, on her daughter, Amy who had come to Li from Mainland China when she was twelve knowing little Enlglish. The article describes the study and the details of how Amy started learning English. Li does a very good job in this article by making everything very understandable and it makes a very good resource for parents that are trying to use two languages in the household.

The "New Media" such as Youtube, Facebook, and Myspace today are changing the political scene for young Americans. The technology today allows people to be more involved with politics, as seen during the 2008 election. Now people can watch debates on YouTube or ask questions at town hall meetings with icams connected to your computer, or even "friend" a presidential candidate on Facebook or Myspace. Technology today is promoting political awareness especially with the youth of America, and will make for interesting turnout in the 2008 election. This article explains how technology is being used to promote political awareness in a new way that has never been used before during a presidential election.

This article is based out of Israel and their education system. The Bible is used in the academic parts of Israel according to this document. Furthermore, it tells how they believe that the community uses the Bible to shape the next generation into what they believe is a good person. Moreover, it explains the lifestyle of the group of people called "Zionist" which was where these beliefs seemed to originate from.

This article gives a few examples of the way the Bible was used and how it influenced some of the famous writers such as Shakespeare. Throughout the article it gives statistics and facts about how the bible influenced and was used in his work. So overall this article described the ways that literacy benefited from the Bible's literacy.

An experiment using music to teach English-as-a-second langauge to elementary aged children. All the students were native Spanish-speaking first graders. The author explains how the students are expected to learn Spanish writing and reading first but then switch to an English curriculum. She used songs and music to help them transition to English.
