Sartre believes that "Hell is other people".
How is this true in "No Exit"?
In what way are Estelle, Inez and Cradeau (Garcin) responsible for each other's salvation or doom?

This is true in "No Exit" because Cradeau, Inez, and Estelle all drive each other crazy with their flaws. For example Inez craves being in control and lives to see other people suffer. She points out Cradeau and Estelle's flaws and uses their faults to manipulate and mentally torture them. This causes many problems because Inez is trying to seduce Estelle, but Estelle wants Cradeau. They are all entwined in this journey through hell because they are in the same room together. I believe that if they want to succeed and reach salvation they will have to work together and get over the flaws that got them in hell in the first place.

If they were even capable of forgetting a small part of their differences they might be able to find salvation, but instead they focus only on other's flaws and their own personalities. It was critical at the end when Inez insisted that Cradeau is always the coward due to his last acts, because if she was even able to let go of a tiny part of her cruel nature Cradeau would've have been making peace with himself. Then they would've been able to help each other to salvation ultimately. So yes, hell is other people, because with the right people they would be able to make you suffer for eternity with no escape.

In the story, Cradeau, Inez and Estelle are showing the really society. A small room to which three belong has dark side of the humanity, such as jealous, control others, coward, desire of sex and indifferent to others. " No Exit" does not only mind the door of the room, but also people never open their heart to trust the others. Estelle wants Cradeau, but Inez love her, and she also could control Cradeau. So none could get out off the room, because they stuck in a circle, and compromise each other. Inez need Cradeau to got Estelle for herself, but Estelle is not easy to convince. Therefore, Cradeau is the only man who feel the pressure from both side.

Estelle's flaw is to gain attention from others; Inez's flaw is to control others; Cradeau's flaw is that he is a coward. Their flaws influence themselves and drive them to hell. When Estelle wants gain attention from Cradeau, Inez wants to control her at the same time. Also Inez exposes Cradeau is a coward to control him. When they start to use do anything with their flaws, they are the doom of each other.

yes. this is true in "no exit" hell is other people.but it doesn't mean everybody that lives around you is hell. it is people who don't get alone with you very well and argue with you sometimes or debating with you for something. if you can not handle that intricate relationship with them. they are hell to you in that way.also we can tell that in that room doesn't have any mirrors in that.they can only know themselves by hearing from others" mouth. when they realize that there is no tools to use to torture them. the only thing that they have is their relation.they close themselves but also torture others.they ave been spying each other since they came into this room. estelle she wants cradeau but rejected by him. inez wants estelle but she doesn't respond for that. cradeau wants inez also got rejected form her. they chase each other but that can not ever reach each other. they wound not be content unless they gain each other.but that is impossible.that is why cradeau concludes that hell is other people. but cradeau also asked a question . is it right to judge people"s life by a single action? yes. only moving can decide for that. if they all admit their faults.they can be safe or staying in hell for ever.being torturing for ever.

yes. this is true in the "no exit", because Cradeau, Inez, and Estelle all have different flaws. We can see their flaw from "no exit" and cause their some argument happen. For example, Estelle is a avaricious person, which cause she to the hell. She married with her father 's friend for money and she got pneumonia finally. Inez's flaw is always try to control others. She try to control Estelle and Cradeau, because she love Estelle. However, Cradeau is a coward, but Estelle want him. Therefore, they are responsible for each other's doom.

In a closed room, only three of people. Inez, Estelle, and Cradeau. Closed along long make them began to become distorted. For example Inez desire to control others, and see the suffering of others. She began to seduce Estelle, Estelle's libido just only needs Cradeau. Cradeau is a coward, he just wanted to escape from this room. They have utilized of each other for their own purposes, forming a complex triangular relationship. However, no one succeeded. So they are the doom of each other. Only abandon their's selfishness can be successful.

No one can grantee there is a real hell exit, just like Stare named his play No Exit which implied that the hell in book is not exit. He used hell to describe the dark and evil deep inside people. He thinks that people's mind and unpredictable and brutal which is exactly same as the hell. In the play No Exit, three characters are both dead because other people's action. In the end, No one got out of the hell, because they did not listen or care each other. This is why Sartre kept repeat that those three need to work together to get out the hell, because the hell likes a place where people lost the hope, the future and themselves. The light will lead them out of hell If they all change themselves and learn things from each others. They all lost themselves who they really are by other people's action and they all suffer in the hell because they did not find each others like a mirror to change and free themselves. Some people make you lost yourselves, but you can find yourselves from other people. This is why Sartre saying that hell is other people.

this is true because there is no torture devices in the room or anything like that. there is only the three of them and they all have personalities that get on the others nerve and it just makes them more and more crazy but there is nothing they can do about it because its just them and thre is no exit
  • Zilin Wang

Of course in "No Exit" that hell is other people. In this story characters like a triangle, they all bound by another person; Cradeau wants Inez to point out what's his mistake, Estelle wants having sex with Cradeau and Inez fall in love with Estelle. That's the reason why they are had too many argument, this room makes dispute getting biger and biger,so Cradeau saids "Hell is other people". The has no mirror, the only one way to see waht's themselves looks like was hear description from others. However, they escape to tell truths to other people so the hell could also be themselves.

The reason I believe them to find the torture of their damnation in one another is that there entire reality will be consumed by something they have no control over, but will constantly have every emotion they feel expressed toward them. Their torture will be intensified because all of the characters in "No Exit" are incredibly self centered, leading to without a doubt an afterlife of what they will soon find as constant annoyance and aggravation which will only multiply as what the characters perceive as time persists.

in "No Exit" it is apperent that the people around you, are what make everything "hell" there is no control of what the people do, and it is there actions or personalities that set you off. the only torture in the play seems to be the surroundings, which are not chains and nooses but something smaller with a longer affect such as no eyelids, backs to seats or mirrors/ windows. the thought of having to live like that personaly sounds worse than being traditionally tortured.
  • Aidan Sperry

I think what Sartre means when he says "hell is other people" is the tragic flaws we inherently adopt are brought out by others and their own flaws which clash with ours. At the beginning of "No Exit" Cradeau and Inez or the Boy I dont know, but their talking about how their particular situation the room there in, the statue, the people there with, etc is completely planned. There all together because this is there perfect hell, combined with these three people in this room is all there worst hell. Whether there is an escape from this hell or if they are doomed for eternity I think depends on whether they can look into themselves and identify why they are there. When they describe their past lives nothing they did is what you would think would land you in "hell" but the core sadistic nature of their being makes it impossible for them to find salvation without being able to identify what that trait is. Who knows maybe were all just in fucking hell and this is a dream

"Hell is other people" that is definitely true as same as in the " No Exit". For Inez, Cradeau and Estelle are dead and they did some wrong things. In the no exit room, they told each other what happened in their life. So they are very knowing each other. But their relationship are very complex because Inez loves Estelle and Estelle wants to staying with Cradeau. Since they know each other, they try to using each other's weakness to control each other for what they want. They lost their heart for obtain what they want. So Sartre believes that "Hell is other people".

Hell is other people is really true, cause when people in a room without windows or doors, you will feel really uncomfortable. Specially is when u stay in the room with another two person. In the "No Exit" people are in the "Hell", because they all did something wrong before, and the only way you can get out from the hell is to correct what you did before. The fact comes out from the play is Inez already know what Cradeau did wrong, but she never told him, Estelle like Cradeau cases he is a only person do not like him, and Inez like Estelle but Estelle do not like her. People always want some thing they do not have, we will find a way to get that things, is does not matter how cruel the way is, people always want to get it. When u want something other people have you will get jealousy, and you want that things badly. So " hell is other people" is true, because people like to competition, people use to be jealously and people have cravings.

Sartre believes hell is other people for a few different reasons. One is the fact that other people can tend to influence the decisions we make and how we feel. Another big reason is that people tend to pick at others flaws. This is evident in the play No Exit because all of the characters have to work together to reach their salvation. It was not easy as the others would criticize each other more than they would look at themselves.

Satre believes that hell is other people because you can see in the book how they all pick out each others flaws and tend to bring out the worse in them and their worse memories.
  • Austin Makris

Hell is other people in No Exit because of the fact they are put in very mild for what hell is to be considered, until they start interacting with one another and the true torment of the room begins. They may 'get along' at times with a person in the room at a point in time, and perhaps even give themselves a sense of temporary enjoyment (though I doubt true happiness) but it would be at someone else in the room's expense. They are responsible for eachothers salvation or doom because they have the power to come together and get over their differences to work for a way out, or let their differences and petty instigation rip into them and cause turmoil, trapping themselves forever in each others torment.
