Rules of Engagement; or, How to Build Better Online Discussion - 0 views

    Digital Media is always asking for comments on the topics discussed and this article teaches the difference in people who express their opinion and those that are trying to engage in discussion. In a classroom setting he suggests to have students participate in online discussions that make them responsible for showing what they have learned and how to summarize and analyze is properly. Online discussion also allow students to read all the information before saying a comment so that they have listened and taken in everything that has been said. In a classroom she suggest to divide the class into three groups that consist of "first responders," "arguers," and "consensus builders." Also she wants to teach social citation that requires students to cite posts from other students which they support. Online learning also allows students who are afraid to speak up in class to discuss without feeling embarrassed.

The Power of We: Collaboration in the Classroom.Or, How I Live-Tweeted My Class With My... - 0 views

    In a 21st Century Media class an instructor conducted an experiment that allowed the students and professor to live tweet their class session, which she deemed a success. The students had an assigned reading that they were to find a method and be able to prepare it to the class. She informed them what a meaningful tweet would be that would be able to add to the online discussion. The purpose of this assignment was to show how twitter can be used academically. Students in the class were able to multitask by discussing online with each other and also in the classroom setting.

In the beginning of his teaching career him and a coworker created a paperless class that forced students to turn in assignments online; eventually turning it into a fully online course. Educational technology classrooms are created worldwide to use new modern ways to teach. Through online learning, students can use smaller parts to create a bigger picture which are then small parts for the collaboration of all the students work that is brought together. He leaves the readers with many questions about how to make the information accessible and accurate across the internet.

    Professor Katherine Rowe teaches a Shakespeare class online and discusses with us the benefits of being able to digitize this course. She says that she has previously taught this exact same course in a lecture hall as well as a theater but believes that it was less effective. Students participate in assignments that allow them to recreate popular Shakespearean scenes digitally for deeper understanding. This article also highlights other projects assigned by various other professors. This includes a digital visualization of the University of Virginia's first library collection and editing of the transcribed online versions of Household Words and All the Year Round.

    Left of Black, a video program from Duke University, reveals a conversation between Professor Mark Anthony Neal, Howard Rambsy II, and Jessica Marie Johnson--all of whom are scholars. The three have an educational discussion over digital humanities and its relation to those who study different cultures and ethnicity, specifically Black Studies. Over this thirty minute conversation Rambsy and Johnson talk about what they have been doing in digital humanities and what can be done to incorporate more Black Studies work. For instance, Rambsy has been creating archival work in Black Studies by posting historical issues of "Negro Digest." Johnson explains how media effects the finance black studies digital humanities receives and that there are a variety of ways to produce black history in powerful ways online. Rambsy believes one great way to spread black studies digital humanities is to introduce and push students into projects in related fields.

    This video talks to students who have been invited to participate in the only Digital Humanities conference for and by undergraduate researchers. Short segments follow students who discuss the meaning of digital humanities, why there are passionate about the field, and different projects they are involved in. For example, a student expresses the difference in publishing for an audience who will be online and the responsibility of the researcher to approach the project in the best way to present it to a larger audience. Collaboration among researchers in the field is noted to be one of the most important aspects in Digital Humanities.
