Digitial Humanities implementation Grants - 3 views

    This program is designed to fund the implementation of innovative digital-humanities projects that have successfully completed a start-up phase and demonstrated their value to the field. These projects help us better understand the central problems in the humanities, and they also raise new questions in the humanities which help develop new digital applications and approaches for the use in the humanities. The digital humanities Implementation Grants programs seeks to identify projects that have successfully completed their startup phase and are well positioned to have a major impact. These grants involve, Implementation of computationally bases methods or techniques for humanities research; implantation of new digital tools for use in humanities research; implementation of new digital tools for use in humanities research, public programming, or educational settings; efforts to ensure the completion and long-term sustainability of existing digital resources; studies that examine the philosophical or practical implications of the use of emerging technologies in specific fields or disciplines of the humanties, or in interdisciplinary collaborations involving several fields or disciplines; or implementation of new digital modes of scholarly communication that facilitate peer review, collaboration, or the dissemination of humanities scholarship for various audiences.

    This article explains how, with the use of digital humanities and simulations, historians will be able to use animation archives to teach history to students. Like a lot of students, both young and old, we are visual learners. By the use of maps and charts and pictures, one can better understand what is being taught, in this instance it will be history.     In this 2011 article, Moya Z. Bailey analyzes the racial and gender makeup of the digital humanities, the navigation of marginalized groups within society, and their interactions with academia. Problems, such as the use of ableist language and the assumption that a few token minorities will eradicate marginalization, are addressed within the article. Bailey also highlights some of the ways in which Digital Humanities are being used to transform the humanities, such as Crunk Feminist Collective communicating with groups that the collective "felt accountable to outside academia."

She uses this term as a broader Digital Humanities method to create a network that uses interpretive knowledge and connected skills to reach a certain audience. By making this teaching more like a graduate seminar students are able to contribute more to the class because they will be more easily self-motivated. Students will understand that there is one instructor and that they contribute to their project while also remembering who the audience is.

    5100 college professors took a survey about their attitudes to the digital approach to technology. Some interesting facts and comments were about using e-books and about 1/3 of professors are giving students access to this. One statistic was about 47% regularly use videos or similations in their course, 36% use it occasionallyand the rest never use any videos when teaching. Professors who teach online and blended courses give their students two times the advantage of other students who are not taught online courses.

    This article reports on the ruling by Harold Baer, Jr. which held that the HathiTrust's mass digitization is fair use. The judge explained in his opinion that the HDL's project is not only fair use in and of itself, but that its potential for text mining and the facilitation of access for print-disabled persons are transformative in nature, and can serve an entirely different purpose than the original works.

    A professor used her Women's Studies class as a way to test out the use of digital humanities in the undergraduate classroom. The assignment was to create an online archive of every issue of the feminist magazine "Conditions" as well as a presentation over the issue they chose. In doing so, they were required to scan in every page of the magazine and edit them on computer to fit together uniformly. At the end of the assignment period, she submitted the archive into the "Lesbian Poetry Archive" for public viewing and use. Through working on this archive, she became convinced that the PDF format will continue to be the main format for converting physical documents into the digital medium. This is due to the format being almost universal in digital humanities and the likelihood of it continuing to be a relevant file format for many years to come.

    Peter Gatkouth an immigration specialist working with the work relief in high point North Carolina helps legal immigrants stay connected with their families. This particular project was sponsored by the Wake Forest University and funded in part by the Humanities council. The Humanities council uses digital material to encourage a new approach to understanding of immigration, with a renewed focus on the lives and experiences of those who are already here. The site includes an interactive world map, which gives a geographic lens to the issue of immigration. It also incorporates a crowd sourcing component where users can upload their own content, their own stories of movement and migration.

The old tactics of constructing a new car would be through physical examples such as clay models. With the use of virtual processing, designers could compare nine to eleven designs and examine specific problems. They invented a high computing ecosystem in order to generate over ten terabytes a day and store all their data. All these decisions was a huge change for their company and as a result they were able to create more options for better results in their products.

Digital Metaphors in Chatonsky's The Subnetwork - 0 views

    I linked this page from ADHO. It is a descriptive article of Gregory Chatonsky's project (?), The Subnetwork. A majority of the article focuses on the abstract relationships that Chatonsky uses to connect many aspects of his work, including participants' interaction (passive and active), animation, and general presentation of the work. It also notes that Chatonsky use of 'metaphor' goes beyond the accepted academic definition of the term, and uses it as an active 'member' or 'tool' to connect the text/concept to the presentation.
