    This is another blog in the Dan Cohen series. In this one in particular, Cohen opens calling digital journalism and digital humanities "kindred spirits". He believes that these two areas of concentration would greatly benefit from working together. The areas in which would be the most profitable from partnership are listed and discussed. A few include use of common tools, platforms and infrastructures, and the idea that developers and technologists should be partners.

    This event is promoting digital teaching to show how looking at an object or text digitally can produce different aspects that would not have been found otherwise. Undergrads typically are able to do some work digitally but lack how to interpret it. Through the collaboration with students they are able to build digital artifacts instead of using technology for media purposes only. The content hosted on the website includes both historical materials related to the country as well as published works by Haitian authors throughout time.     Jouranlist Steve Kolowich reveals how digital humanities can help education, especially through undergraduate work. He explains that most undergraduate students are unaware of how to use digital tools in their research and the best way to confront this issue is to teach them to work with metadata and design databases. Teaching digital humanities is a fundamental shift as well, because grading items such as crowdsourcing projects is quite different to grading a multiple question exam. Like many other professors in the digital humanities field, Professor Laura McGrane believes if the job is done right, students will be able to conquer research in a more knowledgeable way.

Teaching and Making Digital Archives - 4 views

    A professor used her Women's Studies class as a way to test out the use of digital humanities in the undergraduate classroom. The assignment was to create an online archive of every issue of the feminist magazine "Conditions" as well as a presentation over the issue they chose. In doing so, they were required to scan in every page of the magazine and edit them on computer to fit together uniformly. At the end of the assignment period, she submitted the archive into the "Lesbian Poetry Archive" for public viewing and use. Through working on this archive, she became convinced that the PDF format will continue to be the main format for converting physical documents into the digital medium. This is due to the format being almost universal in digital humanities and the likelihood of it continuing to be a relevant file format for many years to come.

For Andrew Stauffer, expert in Digital Humanities : McGill Reporter - 1 views

    This is an interview with Andrew Stauffer, the director of the Networked Infrastructure for Nineteenth-Century Electronic Scholarship at the University of Virginia, which is one of the most important projects in the Digital Humanities field. Through this project, he is exploring how books where written in the past by looking at the human interaction taking place on the pages. That is, he examines messages recorded through annotations by both readers and authors. He is also currently working on examining the effect that Google Books is having on libraries and what information is being lost as we move from analog to digital. Despite the push towards the digital age, Stauffer believes that we will still be reading physical books for many more years.

Mark Anthony Neal: Left of Black Season 3, Episode 1 | Race and the Digital Humanities - 0 views

    Left of Black, a video program from Duke University, reveals a conversation between Professor Mark Anthony Neal, Howard Rambsy II, and Jessica Marie Johnson--all of whom are scholars. The three have an educational discussion over digital humanities and its relation to those who study different cultures and ethnicity, specifically Black Studies. Over this thirty minute conversation Rambsy and Johnson talk about what they have been doing in digital humanities and what can be done to incorporate more Black Studies work. For instance, Rambsy has been creating archival work in Black Studies by posting historical issues of "Negro Digest." Johnson explains how media effects the finance black studies digital humanities receives and that there are a variety of ways to produce black history in powerful ways online. Rambsy believes one great way to spread black studies digital humanities is to introduce and push students into projects in related fields.

    This article written by Rebecca Frost Davis discusses the use of crowdsourcing in order to create a stronger integration with digital humanities and undergraduate curriculum. Having students work on large scale collaborations allows for professors and scholars teach them knowledge in a more creative way. While crowdsource projects may not cause students to take on professional work in the digital humanities field, it will nonetheless cause them to be more aware of how to use digital humanities in their real lives. Frost confronts the problems of such projects, such as the issue of what kind of project best fits into each class and the time constraints encountered. Moreover, whether the students each have access to computers inside and outside of class. With matters such as these properly organized, Frost encourages crowdsourcing projects for undergraduate students.

    This brief article highlights a major change in the Digital Humanities that occurred in 2012, an MLA release containing standardized guidelines for evaluating work in the Digital Humanities. Those who stand the most to gain from this release are the DH professors themselves, as the guidelines lay some basic ground rules for evaluating this material for the purposes of promotion or gaining tenure. Although the guidelines are non-enforceable, being that they are from the MLA they are likely to be given some weight.

Concrete Steps Toward a Digital Public Library of America - 2 views

    This article is providing an update of the advances DPLA has made in creating a digital national public library. DPLA announced the launch of it Digital Hubs Pilot Project in 7 states at DPLA Midwest (a large conference in Chicago. The project was created to help local libraries and communities digitize their collection with technological resources and supportive staff. A prototype will be launched in April of 2013 with topics including civil rights, Native Americans, and immigration. It also announced Appfest (held Nov. 8 & 9) to present ideas, including working models, of possible platforms for the metadata.
