Twitter gets you fired in 140 characters or less - Technotica- msnbc.com - 0 views

  • Clay Shirky speaks of a day in the not-too-distant future when human resources departments will have the wisdom to look beyond social networking faux pas — at least in some small part because by then, everyone will have made at least one.
  • Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., tweeted this as-it-happens update regarding his group’s location and destination:"Moved into green zone by helicopter Iraqi flag now over palace. Headed to new US embassy Appears calmer less chaotic than previous here."
  • This social networking comedy of errors spread like dancing hamsters across Twitter. In the retelling, "theconnor" earned the nick, "Cisco Fatty." Before the work day ended, Web sleuths revealed "theconnor's" true identity. "Theconnor" was lampooned in a popular YouTube meme. And thanks to Google Cache, the deleted content of "theconnor’s" homepage resurfaced on CiscoFatty.com, a Web site erected to commemorate this cautionary tale.

Students need to understand that NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING Is private. Great case study about how 140 characters got someone fired before they were even hired.

olympics - Twitter Search - 0 views

  •
If you want to follow what is happening on twitter about the olympics -- summize has been bought by twitter so it is now officially "twitter search." You can pull the rss feed from this and add it to your Olympics page if you wish.
  •
Another great way to help teachers understand rss - use summize (now twitter search) and let them it.

information fluency @ Bing vs. Google - 0 views

Here's a side by side comparison of Bing Vs Google results on the term: Information Fluency 21cif.com ( formerly 21cif.imsa.edu ) has been online for 10+ years and dominates the Google Search results. Nothing in the top ten for Bing? Google ranks our old url #1 and our new url #4. Give this a try for your self with the same terms? I'll bet you get radically different results from Google than I do. Since I've worked on the 21cif project for nearly 8 years, I know the materials well. Also Google has adapted to my search habits and provides me with more links relevant to my interest. On the Google page I'm given a link to my search-wiki results: http://tinyurl.com/21cif-search-wiki

The more sources of information you tap, the better your chances of getting a less filtered view of what's available on the world wide web

Twittering Dante : New Models for Student Writing in the Digital Age - 0 views

  •
Cracking Dante's Inferno is a tough row to hoe for any high school student-but what if the reading assignment was conducted via Twitter? The exercise "Twitter in Hell" was handed to some lucky seniors at University Laboratory High School at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, after reading the classic tome. Their mission? To write 140-character tweets describing each level in hell as if they were Dante writing to his beloved Beatrice.

This is the talk given at TED by Richard Baraniuk on Connexions, an open-source system for free educational content and his belief that this type of innovation will replace textbooks (YAY!). It's the first link on the list; I didn't save the link itself because it opens on a media player and that's really annoying. Click and enjoy! (PS If you've been living as a hostage on the moon for the last couple of years and haven't heard of TED give it a look/listen - it rocks).
