Blogger or BlogSpot - 2 views

  •
Site for sharing ideas, photos, stories. Anyone can access the blogsite, like any other website. Comments can be made on the blogs by the viewers. This tool allows the creator to personalize the page with themes and gadgets. This site could be used by teachers within the classroom for older students to do writing projects. Blogger could also be used as a parent/teacher collaboration tool in early childhood settings.

Fun and easy to use and customize. Good tool for education/classroom blogging.

This site was really easy to set up, but I've had a hard time using it to search for and follow other applicable blogs. Any suggestions?

Dabbleboard: The Whiteboard Reinvented - 3 views

  •
Dabbleboard is an online whiteboard that allows users to visualize, explore, communicate, create, and share their work. Users can chose from two ways of drawing: freehand or computer-recognized shapes. Either way, users can create a multitude of pieces. Dabbleboard can be especially helpful for students. They can create flow charts, organizational charts, or mind maps to process school topics. As well, they can create comic strips, mark on uploaded pictures, or freehand drawings to accompany an original story. There is also a collaborative feature, that allows users to voice and video chate, share with or browse the public library, or send the link of their creation via the web. There are endless possibilities for students to express their creativity using Dabbleboard.

This can be a great graphic organizer to help students study for tests and communicate while doing projects.

Learning, Digital Media and Creative Play in Early Childhood | Spotlight on Digital Med... - 6 views

  • Parents need help figuring out how to set limits with new media and making sure it doesn’t replace one-on-one time talking with their children, which experts agree is still the most valuable learning tool of all.
  • in addition to identifying quality in children’s media, is getting parents to understand the importance of setting limits and guiding their children’s media play.
  • before using technology with young children, teachers and parents should ask themselves: “What’s the value added at this particular developmental level?” and, “What can technology offer that other things can’t offer?”
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • “What are really useful are the interactive and empowering tools.”
  • “I get nervous when people just close the door on technology in preschool,” she said. “There’s an opening of windows onto new worlds that can occur when you have a computer there – a YouTube video or a Skype chat with other preschools in Sweden or Singapore. These are especially magical moments that can happen with young kids -  especially when they just don’t get that otherwise.”

iOSteacher: Storytelling - 3 views

  •
I have found SonicPics to be a great and easy tool for capturing stories. The app makes it easy to create a podcast which is easy to share. I have also used it as a reflective tool wi my classroom assistants, where we created a podcast of what we saw children in our small groups talking about and observing during an investigation on Australian animals.

The Newspaper Clipping Image Generator - Create your own fun newspaper - fodey.com - 1 views

This is a very simple website, probably better for older kids because site does not provide detailed instructions. Also relies a lot on author/kids own creativity and story formation. Good tool for creating different types of creative writing assignments. Have to be careful because also includes links to make you own cigarette boxes, which led me to believe the site is not highly monitored and kids may be able to access other inappropriate websites.

Totlol: Daddy, Mommy, More Video! - 2 views

  •
Totlol is a site that caters movies to a younger audience that sites like Youtube tend to neglect. Users can upload videos and moderate each other's videos. The downside to this is that you must pay in order to have a membership, which is necessary to view the videos. Examples of the videos include videos of children's songs and stories.

Can Digital Technologies Help Low-Income Preschoolers Catch Up to Their Peers? | Spotli... - 3 views

  • Pasnik says she sees a lot of learning potential in these newer technologies. Tablet computers for example, offer repetition, portability and the possibility of learning with gestural movements, all of which hold promise for preschool students. She cautions that many of the apps being developed today place too much emphasis on academic skills and not enough emphasis on making things, discovering, sharing and turn taking. “We do a disservice to young children in attending to a very rigid and narrow sense of math and literacy and not really paying attention to the developmental needs of this age group,” said Pasnik. “The uptake of adoption here is far in advance of the research. But that’s not to say that we can’t be really thoughtful about what we do know about children’s development.”

I think a lot of the applications out there are focusing too much on academics. I have one app called "toddler shapes" where a toddler--apparently is supposed to enjoy this application and learn their shapes. I have found this application to be much more developmentally appropriate for my preschoolers. My point is, that Pasnik is right, there needs to be more applications that help children explore..applications that facilitate inquiry.
  •
I spent some time searching for apps for my granddaughter. I was disappointed to see that there was so many apps focused on letter recognition, number recognition, and shapes, yet not enough open-ended apps that encourage creative and divergent thinking. The iPad has so much potential, but if the software isn't appropriate, it will be of little value.

All Auburn kindergarten students getting iPads this fall | Sun Journal - 3 views

I think it is great that some districts are getting this new technology out into classrooms, and particularly early childhood classrooms...but I am finding that there is often a piece missing--the professional development or training that shows teachers "what to do with this thing".
