Not learning algebra means you have shut the door on many careers. Sure you can lead a good life without it, but you have limited yourself. Math phobics are always looking for a reason to justify/validate their choice to avoid math. Trying to make math seem irrelevant to life is a common approach. Imagine saying learning English is overrated - many get by just fine without writing or reading much of anything in their daily lives. In fact, why do we need any education?

It's an interesting article. The writer followed it up in his blog extending similar treatment to ALL subjects. It's more a treatise in how curriculum design and the current state of the system has failed society, rather than an attack on disciplines specifically. He actually has a STEM background, mind you.

Here is a list of all of the skills students learn in Algebra! The skills are organized into categories, and you can move your mouse over any skill name to see a sample question. To start practicing, just click on any link. IXL will track your score, and the questions will even increase in difficulty as you improve!

Practice quizzes! They have all sorts of topics and you can finish any time and it gives you the length of time you were in and how many you got right. When you get a question wrong, it tells you what the correct answer(s) are. Multiple choice practice! Can be used with the whole class to review or in teams when they finish an activity early (great for that since they can end any time).

Modules to take students through many concepts in Algebra. It includes introductory "hook" questions as well as videos to explain concepts. Some of the videos would be great to show in class to motivate the students! Also a great resource for students who need additional assistance.

One of the best websites I have seen for math tutorials at all levels - k through Algebra 2. Also, a great site for games puzzles, or questions of the day.

This is a series of videos about doodling in math class. They relate, although sometimes loosely, to topics from geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus. Very fun to show students as a side-note to regular lessons.

WebMath is designed to help you solve your math problems. Composed of forms to fill-in and then returns analysis of a problem and, when possible, provides a step-by-step solution. Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics.

Desmos is an online graphing calculator that allows the user to plot points, graph lines and parabolas. A variety of common algebraic functions are included with sliders, allowing the user to manipulate the data in real time and see the results of those changes. Students can also use it to create math art on coordinate grids.
