Great use of multiple apps to get students thinking in creative ways about meiosis. Has potential to be applied in a number of different settings - I'm thinking about drama to show dramatic power of movement, or in interesting digital story-telling applications. High School level.

Attention versus distraction? What that big NY Times story leaves out » Niema... - 51 views

The web is a space whose very abundance of information - and whose very informational infrastructure - trains our attention to follow our interests. And vice versa. In that, it's empowering information as a function of interest. It's telling Vishal that it's better to spend time with video than with Vonnegut - simply because he's more interested in editing than in reading. Vishal needs needs no other justification for his choice; interest itself is its own acquittal. And we're seeing the same thing in news. While formal learning has been, in the pre-digital world, a matter of rote obligation in the service of intellectual catholicism - and news consumption has been a matter of the bundle rather than the atom - the web-powered world is creating a knowledge economy that spins on the axis of interest. Individual interest. The web inculcates a follow your bliss approach to learning that seeps, slowly, into the broader realm of information; under its influence, our notion of knowledge is slowly shedding its normative layers.

The 22 rules of storytelling, according to Pixar - 4 views

  • You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.
  • You gotta keep in mind what's interesting to you as an audience, not what's fun to do as a writer. They can be v. different.
  • Putting it on paper lets you start fixing it. If it stays in your head, a perfect idea, you'll never share it with anyone.

  • Simplify. Focus. Combine
  • Why must you tell THIS story? What's the belief burning within you that your story feeds off of? That's the heart of it.
  • No work is ever wasted. If it's not working, let go and move on - it'll come back around to be useful later.

Three Reasons Students Should Own Your Classroom's Twitter and Instagram Accounts - EdS... - 51 views

  • Three Reasons Students Should Own Your Classroom’s Twitter and Instagram Accounts
  • We must think more critically about how we communicate via social media.
  • 1. Genuine Digital Citizenship Opportunities
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • 2. Publishing for the World (and the Classroom Across the Hall) is Powerful
  • 3. Establishing Your Classroom Brand
  • According to educators Joe Sanfelippo and Tony Sinanis, branding can be defined as “the marking practice of creating a name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from other products.” Within the past few years, this idea of branding our schools/classrooms has become extremely valuable, as it promotes transparency by painting an accurate, live picture of what is taking place. Yet, in reality, the majority of the time the educators are the ones telling these stories. While this certainly has its place, ultimately what matters most is how students feel about their experiences. Social media has allowed my students to share our classroom happenings through their eyes. It has allowed my students the opportunity to both establish and share the culture of our classroom and our school, and ultimately create our “brand”.
