The impact of teachers' efforts to switch over technology is a revolution in the making. The education system has transformed overnight, and it will have unprecedented implications on education. The classes will be powered by technology now. The value will be added to the process of learning and less time will be spent on mundane tasks. The experience over the last year should inspire all of us who are involved in education to reflect on our efforts and consider the real impact.

Technology may not be an essential part of education, but it is definitely essential for scaling up learning, and also because education is directly related to a global reduction in poverty, child labor, EdTech is essential if we need to reach out to the remotest part of the world to impart education. Because of technology, the role of teachers has shifted to being facilitators and guides. The traditional role of the teacher is evolving, and lecture-based teaching is considered an obsolete approach now. With technology as a part of education, teaching is becoming more personalized. Traditional classrooms will have to change to meet the requirements of high school and college education and prepare students with 21st-century skills.

There has been a lot of recent debate on the benefits of social networking tools and software in education. While there are good points on either side of the debate, there remains the essential difference in theoretical positioning. Most conventional educational environments are "Objectivist" in nature and highly structured in terms of students progress and choice. Social networking essentially requires a less controlled, user-generated environment, which challenges conventional views of the effective "management" of teaching and learning. Therefore, can social networking both as an instructional concept and user skill be integrated into the conventional approaches to teaching and learning? Do the skills developed within a social networking environment have value in the more conventional environments of learning?

I think it might be more accurate to say that "Web 2.0 will be a significant part of the future of learning," and that in the best case scenario it will become an important part of our formal educational institutions.

"I really believe that true PD happens in small chunks. That's what social networks like Twitter and Plurk and Ning provide - small bits of real feedback, right there at the exact right time. Teachers have always talked and shared their ideas in the hallways of their school between classes. Well, now those hallways have gone online," says Lori Reed, a 20-year veteran third-grade teacher from Kress Independent School District in Kress, Texas. Social networking, she adds, connects her to people and resources that help her do her job better.
