iPad Perks: Top 5 Ways the Device can Help you Excel in Online Learning - 53 views

  •
The holidays are fast approaching and if you're unsure of what you would like to ask Santa to bring you this year, you might consider putting the iPad or even better-the iPad2 on the top of your wish list. It's a pricey gift (starts at $499) but it's an investment well spent, especially if you are an online student. That's because not only can it help simplify your everyday activities, but it can also be a vital instrument that can help you achieve success while enrolled in an online program (and can be used long after graduation). To learn the top 5 reasons for using an iPad as an online student, continue reading below.

Literacy Journal: Only 1 iPad in the Classroom? - 41 views

  •
Is only one iPad in a classroom worth it? This question keeps reappearing on the EC Ning and in other blog spaces. The answer is easy: YES, especially if the teacher has access to a Mac desktop or (preferably) laptop and a wifi network in the classroom. It is an even larger YES if the Mac device has the most current operating system. Having a computer to which the iPad can sync is not absolutely necessary, but it is a Best Idea. If you are not feeling confident, get your IT person or another teacher to help you out with setup. I am focused here on apps to install for MS and HS - and then what to do with them.

Elif Bilgin - Extraordinary People Changing the Game - 0 views

Plastic destroys our ecosystem yet we keep reproducing them. It's as if we are only after making life more convenient for the present and not at the very least concerned about the fate of our children, who will basically inherit this planet. It's easy to just ignore this for now especially if we delude ourselves with false hope that someone else will figure out a way to solve a major problem such as pollution. Elif Bilgin, a gifted teen from Istanbul, isn't too selfish to just think of the now. She made bio-plastics out of banana peels. To read more about Elif Bilgin visit www.thextraordinary.org

  • Good pedagogy is the product of instructors who respect, understand, and creatively engage their students.
  • I am asking instructors to see the two questions that the new epistemology emblazons across the front of every classroom — "So what?" and "Who cares?" — and then to adjust their teaching accordingly.

  • Welcome to www.Classsroom20.com, the social networking site devoted to those interested in the practical application of computer technology (especially Web 2.0) in the classroom and in their own professional development. Especially we hope that those who feel they are "beginners" will find this a comfortable place to start being a part of the community dialog and to learn more.

Classroom20 social network over 1000 members and growing, forums, blogs - very active community - definitely worth joining. Not sure however that Ning is the best platform. Am thinking that something like ectolearning.com might be more suitable even though it isn't as "jazzy" as Ning.

This blog post on Ewan McIntosh's edu.blogs.com points out a new peer-reviewed study that links Web 2.0 to academic improvement. The report found that Web 2.0 tools encourage participation and engagement, especially for those students who are timid; help students continue classroom discussions outside of the classroom; let students who are so inclined continue researching anytime, anywhere; and instill a sense of ownership and pride in students for the work they publish online, which can lead to more attention to detail and a better quality of work. The report also found that one of the biggest obstacles to using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom was the time it takes teachers to incorporate those new tools into lesson plans. Although many teachers were familiar with the tools and used them in their personal lives, they were apprehensive about how to monitor Internet use in the classroom and the time needed to figure out how those tools should be used to teach.

HIV and AIDS in Russia - 0 views

With a dwindling population and an out of control HIV infection rate in Russia, the future looks bleak. Estimates place Russia on the forefront of the battle against HIV and in a worse position than Africa. Largely ignored by the media and the government, HIV has become the rapidly spreading epidemic in Russia, especially among the youth who are supposed to be future of the country.

Teachers of Dante's Comedy will find a range of materials intended to facilitate the teaching of the poem. They include a video demonstration, which introduces users to the chief components to the site and how to access them; a list of suggested activities; additional readings on the poem and on the artists whose work is included; links to other sites; and a survey. The activities work particularly well if teachers show students how to access the various materials, especially the information available on the combined text pages and search page.
