If you peruse the 'education' category of the App Store you will see thousands of poorly organized apps that run the gamut from a $1,000 Bar Review app to a simple doodle app. Both are somewhat useful but only for a specific type of user. Fear not! We are here to help declutter the App Store for you. Below is a helpful list of apps that will save you hours of App Store-hunting and hopefully help you organize your day a bit better. Print runs for CDs with a jewel case and nice color insert generally start at 1,000 for close to $1,000, though you can get away with spending a few hundred bucks for a short run, if you're willing to pay quite a bit more per disc. This is all well and good, if you sell all of the CDs you print. If not, you're left with some expensive drink coasters.

Welcome to the latest version of the FirstClass Roadmap. Our next major release is FirstClass 10, and we want to use this opportunity to deliver far-reaching fundamental enhancements to FirstClass. Many of these new capabilities are very large in size and scope, and we needed to do a fair bit of research to understand what was feasible from both a content and a timeframe perspective.

I think iPhone applications will be the next frontier for e-learning. While I imagine inexpensive textbooks and access to course management systems, the market is driven by games. I suspect this will be a big year for phone games (and who knows, we may learn a little bit too!

"I really believe that true PD happens in small chunks. That's what social networks like Twitter and Plurk and Ning provide - small bits of real feedback, right there at the exact right time. Teachers have always talked and shared their ideas in the hallways of their school between classes. Well, now those hallways have gone online," says Lori Reed, a 20-year veteran third-grade teacher from Kress Independent School District in Kress, Texas. Social networking, she adds, connects her to people and resources that help her do her job better.

Blogs are naturally "publish at will" platforms. While blogs certainly CAN be configured to have new posts "moderated" by someone serving in the role of a gatekeeper, by default most blogs allow users to publish INSTANTLY. If you're interested in setting up a blog for moderated posting by students, I'd recommend using Class Blogmeister for this purpose. Wordpress blogs can be configured for contributor posts to be moderated as well, but this requires a bit of configuration. (This is the setup we're using here on ISTEconnects, btw.) On the Wordpress dashboard, under SETTINGS - GENERAL SETTINGS, we've checked the MEMBERSHIP box ANYONE CAN REGISTER and set the "New User Default Role" to be CONTRIBUTOR. With these configuration settings, new posts must be reviewed by a user designated as an "editor" or "administrator" before they become "live" on the site. To setup a free classroom or personal Wordpress blog you don't have to host yourself, I recommend using EduBlogs or Wordpress.com. Blogs setup with Blogger can similarly be setup as "team" blogs with moderated contributions from members which can include students and/or teachers. Clever use of social networking tech. The initial take on twitter was that it just broadcast mindless sort personal observations. This use turns that idea around. Interesting way to teach a bit of history. What if we started tweeting Basho & Issa, the great Japanese haiku poets? Hmmm sounds like a fun lit project doesn't it?
