"Over the past academic year, my students and I have been experimenting with the use of a number of web based applications (often known as Web 2.0 tools). My aim has been to enhance our schemes of work by providing our students with new and exciting learning opportunities. In my opinion, using technology effectively has clear benefits for both teaching and learning and can help to improve motivation by engaging pupils in activities which, perhaps, step out of their ordinary school experience and which show them that it is possible to teach and learn about a subject using tools similar to those they use daily outside school. In other words, we have tried to use the types of tools with which they are often already familiar. I have written about each of these individual tools in separate posts, but I thought it would be useful to list the ten most used internet applications on one post. as ever, I aim to provide, not only a list of the web applications we have used, but also examples of practice which you may wish to follow or, indeed, improve upon. Therefore, each of the entries below has links leading to lesson plans which have incorporated the tools as well as working examples of students' work where appropriate. Without further ado, and in alphabetical order, my ten tried and tested internet tools for teachers are:"

How Schools Can Use Facebook to Build an Online Community - 1 views
-
Facebook is an excellent opportunity for a school to connect with families and share information rapidly. If a school is consistent in keeping the information updated and accurate, students and families will likely come to rely on the Facebook Page as a resource to find information about what’s going on at the school.

Twitter Tips: for Teachers & Educators | Technology Enhanced Learning Blog - 1 views

Does anyone know anything more about applications for shortening URLs? any use for them other than for Twitter use?
-
I've used goo.gl which is Google's URL shortener. I like it because it also generates a QR code. The code can then be printed out and used for listening practice (the project that I used it with was a recorded dialogue uploaded to YouTube).

-
looking at their follower/updates list; if they are following 10,000 people, have 20 followers, and only 1 update then I’d safely say it’s an automated account and can be ignored!

Karen, I use a shortener when I have a very long URL - even to include in an email, or to advertise something I want people to go to (a survey I did) and some shorteners will let you pick your own ending so it can be something recognizable rather than random letters. I think Twitter does this automatically for you now.

Why Diigo Rocks for Educators! | TeachHUB - 7 views
-
Once the group is created, you can create student accounts. No email addresses needed. You create the username and password.
-
There are groups for all these where members can share their saves to not only their inventory but to the group as well. Diigo will email you once a week with all the new content. Pretty neat, huh?
-
There are loads of other features as well, like highlighting on a webpage, adding sticky notes to pages, saving pages to read later without actually adding them to your collection and so much more.
- ...5 more annotations...
-
When you save to Diigo your saves go anywhere because they are saved to the cloud. Sounds mystical doesn't it?
-
One of the most powerful features is the tagging. Basically, if I save Google.com and don't tag it, I will have to remember the name of the site or something in the address
-
So if students are working on a group project they can share their saves together, automatically. Or as a class, if you are working on something everyone can contribute information they find.
-
I love that you can use this with students! I had no clue. Thanks for sharing.
-
As I Am still trying to understAnd the full benefits of using Diigo, I found this Article of tremendous help. ThAnk you for shAring!
-
This seems really useful. I'm excited about Diigo for my own use, hadn't thought about using it with students yet.

He suggested firstly that "linguistic interaction is a collaborative activity," and then moved on to say that "linguistic communication involves the establishment of a triangular relationship between the sender, the receiver, and the context of situation."

It offers an authentic learning environment, in which language learners can orally and visually interact with another human being in the target language much in the same ways as in face-to-face interaction. However, research on oral-visual interaction in CMC has only occupied a marginal status in CMC research.
-
Cognitively and linguistically, it is generally maintained that paralinguistic cues such as head nods and facial expressions reduce ambiguity in speech and improve understanding
-
More importantly, there is a crucial pedagogical concern at the heart of this research, that is, for distance language professionals to be open to the use of whatever technology available to maximize the level and quality of oral-visual interaction, and in so doing, create a more effective and efficient learning environment for distance language learners. although the technology is changing rapidly, the larger pedagogical issue contained in this research is unlimited and beyond obsolescence.
-
It is not an exaggeration to say that Internet-based real time technology is changing distance education quantitatively as well as qualitatively, and this research represents only the beginning of the important effort to make distance language learning a more effective endeavor.

Unlike in US, most European students learn a foreign language | Pew Research Center - 1 views

In a 2016 Pew Research Center report on the state of american jobs, only 36% of americans reported that knowing a foreign language was an extremely or very important trait for workers to be successful in today’s economy, ranking it last out of eight skills for workers’ success
-
This is not related to our synchronous activities of the week, but suggests a link we've yet to make so far: how to use tech in our classroom to help to change the perception, prevalent in the US, that foreign languages are not an essential professional skill. With all the wonderful apps we've seen this past few weeks, there's surely something to do be with them about this issue!

I've never tried E-Pals but it looks promising if you want to find a "sister" class to team up with your class to write/chat. anyone with experience with this site?
-
That's so funny that you just posted this...I posted a question a little bit ago about the same thing. I have heard of EPals, but have never actually used it. I wonder if it would be a lot of work for us as teachers?
-
I found this while sorting through my old bookmarks to add them to diigo. anyone ever used this or heard of it?
-
I want to say that they have been around in a number of forms over many years - maybe even started at St Olaf College as Classroom to Classroom Connections back in the 90's?? But they've grown into a huge corporation now! These kinds of projects are the ones I like the best - when you get kids talking to each other!

One “choice” assignment I regularly offer students is letting them engage in a texting conversation in Spanish and send me the screenshots. This assignment seems more like fun than like work. Plus, students are able to use the language in an authentic, realistic way.

Connect students with another class and set up a virtual pen pal program. (Bonus points if you can arrange this with a class in a country in which the target language is spoken.)

If you aim to use authentic resources in your classes and expose your students to infographics, advertisements, or news articles in the target language, actively Learn epitomizes convenience and efficiency. This website allows teachers to embed standards-based questions within an online text. as they read, students can respond in the target language about the main idea and purpose of the text, as well as the author’s tone and opinion. actively Learn also provides useful data for teachers, including the amount of time students spent reading. Rather than opening a series of tabs leading to different documents, students are able to read and respond all in one place.
-
Nice resources. I have not heard of actively Learning. But I have used screenomatic and Edpuzzle together. It worked well.
-
Lots of good ideas. I would like to look into actively Learning. Sounds like a great resource. Pear Deck is another one I would like to try. I agree that the virtual pen pals sounds like fun, as does having students text in Spanish and send you screenshots. They already have tons of personal experience with that already.

I find this sentence important because it drives home the point that authentic resources can serve a variety of purposes, from "hooking the students" or activating global knowledge to complex assignments resulting in student presentations, etc. It's a good reminder that, rather than searching for that one perfect piece while under pressure to plan a lesson, it's a good idea to start a digital collection of materials that strike me as interesting.

I really appreciated reading this as I just tried recording my first screencastify minilecture yesterday and found it really challenging! One tip that I got from this that I will try is to put the recording in EdPuzzle so that I can put in some comprehension checks!
-
I found this to be a very informative and helpful article with lots of practical suggestions and useful links. I wish I had read this before I tried to make videos with Screencast-o-Matic for my classes this past Spring. I could have used his suggestions! I will definitely be referring to it when I begin to make videos for my classes this fall. I too liked how he put his video into EdPuzzle to increase student interactivity. Thanks for sharing it!
-
Hey this is really useful. I have a feeling that I'm going to be using screencasts often as I convert all my teaching to online in the fall. It will be most useful for grammar explanation types of lessons. It looks like it is just what is needed to fill that need for personal explanations that the students want. I prefer interactive worksheets but I get the feeling students don't like them as much as I do.
-
Thank you for sharing! This will come in handy as I'm prepping for hybrid teaching this fall.
-
I used Screencast-o-matic for sharing my presentation while creating a video and it was a great program. Kaltura is also a great way to create presentations.
