Screencasting Tools: Camtasia vs. Screencast-O-Matic - Instructional Technology Blog | ... - 2 views

Whenever I ask my students to use a new web app I go record myself signing in and doing an example.
  • Recording your computer screens into a digital video (screencasting) for class tutorials can come in handy when flipping the classroom.  You can record yourself using an online tool, reciting a presentation, or guide students through a website.  You can even record streaming video online – though you will still have to follow copyright rules when recording online video.  This post will compare two popular screencasting tools: Camtasia (which cost money) and Screencast-O-Matic (free).

This sentence describes why we need to use screencasts. I like this article because we can get more information about different ways how to use screencasting.
  • Screencasting is one of the most dynamic tools educators can use to transform their classroom in a dramatic fashion without investing a tremendous amount of time learning a new software piece or app.

I really appreciated reading this as I just tried recording my first screencastify minilecture yesterday and found it really challenging! One tip that I got from this that I will try is to put the recording in EdPuzzle so that I can put in some comprehension checks!

I found this to be a very informative and helpful article with lots of practical suggestions and useful links. I wish I had read this before I tried to make videos with Screencast-o-Matic for my classes this past Spring. I could have used his suggestions! I will definitely be referring to it when I begin to make videos for my classes this fall. I too liked how he put his video into EdPuzzle to increase student interactivity. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey this is really useful. I have a feeling that I'm going to be using screencasts often as I convert all my teaching to online in the fall. It will be most useful for grammar explanation types of lessons. It looks like it is just what is needed to fill that need for personal explanations that the students want. I prefer interactive worksheets but I get the feeling students don't like them as much as I do.

Thank you for sharing! This will come in handy as I'm prepping for hybrid teaching this fall.

I used Screencast-o-matic for sharing my presentation while creating a video and it was a great program. Kaltura is also a great way to create presentations.

Screencast-O-Matic - 1 views

Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing. You can group into channels for a class or topic. You can upload to their site, YouTube, or download a movie you can put anywhere. Nice and really easy to use. You can record a video of yourself that you can put into a corner of the screencast.

A new screencast tool - the "buzz" on their page says it's incredibly easy to use.  Mac or PC, it's online, nothing to install - you just need a webcam and go!  Plays on the web or mobile devices.   I don't know about editing tools

Make screencasts interactive with eduCanon | Douchy's Blog - 2 views

  • Because eduCanon uses HTML5, rather than Flash, playback works great on an iPad, too.

This could be an advantage for Apple devices. Flash has occasional issues with Apple products.

That's good to know. My students have a mixed bag of devices, and several have Ipads.
  • The first time students watch a video, they are unable to skip through the video; they have to watch the whole thing from start to finish and attempt every question.

Love this feature. Like with reading, middle schoolers pick through material to find the answers. We can't glue them to their seats, but they never know where those questions will pop up and they can't look ahead to see what answers they need to find. Love that!
  • You paste in the URL of the video, then watch it play

According to another blog I was reading regarding licensing and sharing, if the "embed" function is operable the owner has endorsed (consciously or thru oversight?) sharing.

  • The answers people choose in a public video are not collected by eduCanon.

Good to know to allay students' fears. Will they even think that their answers would be made public-probably not most MS students.
  • You can assign a video to the class, and then eduCanon collects data for you on your class’ completion of the task and their responses to your questions.
  • all of those features are 100% free
