Why is e-learning just plain wrong? - 3 views

  • Now think about your e-learning program. Does it let your learners naturally explore new information? Does it allow them to practice applying that information, until they’re confident they can get the right results in the real world? Or is your program more e-reading than e-learning? Maybe you’re getting sucked into that vortex of page-by-page, PowerPoint-like courses! If you are, that really does suck...and it's wrong, because your learners aren't getting all they need to perform at top levels.

York News-Times > Archives > News > YES students use iPod touches to improve reading sk... - 2 views

  • Students use the iPod touches to record themselves reading what Nienhueser calls a fresh read passage, as it is the first time they have read it. They then listen to the recording and score themselves based on a rubric given to them by their teacher. The rubric scores students based on their level of fluency, expression, pacing and smoothness. Next, each student meets with a partner so they can evaluate someone else’s recording. Nienhueser said students have to be able to explain why they chose the scores they selected. The partners also take time to see if they agree with each other’s scores.

Becoming Excellent - 9 views

  • My point is that students are not asked to focus on their passion and strive to strengthen that as best as they could like often cited professionals like Ma and Lincecum. They are not provided with considerable time to hone their craft like professionals or those striving to be professionals. We, instead, seem to be pushing for improving everything which perhaps leads to average in a lot of things.
  • Imagine what school would be like if we asked students to focus the bulk of their energies on one area, their passion and strength. I firmly believe that if we helped bring their passions to light, provided them support, and allotted ample time to focus their efforts on that craft, they would show levels of commitment, engagement, and efforts that rival professionals.

  • How do you identify and avoid spreading misinformation, myths, and urban legends on the internet?
  • employ a healthy level of skepticism for what you're reading, watching, or otherwise consuming—on the internet or elsewhere
  • Snopes is "the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation"—and for the most part, it actually does live up to that goal.

Teacher Professional Development Sourcebook: Comedy for Teachers - 0 views

  • An alternative-certification program that recruits math teachers believes educators could learn a thing or two about classroom management from stand-up comics.
  • To help its teachers develop that knack, Math for America is offering its New York City fellows after-school improv comedy classes taught by Rachel Hamilton, an alum of Second City, the Chicago-based troupe that launched the careers of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Amy Poehler, among others.
  • "The drive behind all of our PD, whether it's the driest high-level math presentation or improv comedy, is to emphasize how this is going to be applied in the classroom so that your students are successful in the classroom and in the workforce,' Umphrey said.
