"What makerspace materials and supplies should you buy or stock for your hands-on learning lab?  There are a lot of options out there to choose from and it can be confusing when you're first starting out as a maker educator.  Instead of just spending money randomly on items you think you will need, it's always a great idea to work backwards first.  You need to make a list of your goals for your makerspace and then define some of the projects you want to do in your makerspace.  Once you have defined the projects, you will have a better idea of the materials you need to buy.  Since money is always tight and you can't buy everything, try partnering with another maker educator and share/trade some of your items.  Lets say you're both working on a series of robotics lessons.  Each of you can buy one type of robotics kit and then when you have completed a few lessons you can trade with each other.  This is also a great way to try out new types of kits, equipment or materials before buying them. Now keep in mind makerspaces don't always need structured lessons and are great for open ended exploration.  Give your students some materials, maybe a little instruction and then let them loose to see what they do. "Hold up.  Before you ask me what kind of 3d printer to buy, I want to introduce you to something even better. Someone, actually. Seymour Papert.  Let me guess, if you're like me, you were NOT introduced to him in your college coursework on education.  Then one day, you discovered his work and started reading it.  Articles dated from around the year you started kindergarten, talking about empowering children to use their creativity and how technology's role plays into all of that in a beautiful way. Then you realize this Maker Movement unfolding around us?  It's so NOT about products. It's not about the flashy kits and lists of things to order.  In fact, that STUFF is an INSULT to what it really is.  You don't need tons of expensive stuff or a special room where creativity is allowed.  You need to make the environment, wherever it may be, the kind of place that brings the makerspace OUT of each child.  And to do THAT? You just need to know your kids. What are their needs? What do they like? What are their passions? Empowerment comes out of connecting with kids and then letting them steer the ship."

"A few weeks ago, I introduced some of our 2nd grade elementary students to some iPad apps that let you work in 3D! Sometimes it is difficult to do 3D art projects in the art room because you need so much room to store projects from week to week. Working on the iPad lets students have some interesting virtual art experiences without the need for storage, mess, and in some cases dangerous tools."

A Google Chrome extension that lets you enter a search phrase and then lets you click and click on results from 9 different searches (Google, Yahoo, Bing, Wikipedia, YouTube, Wolfram, Amazon, Ebay, Twitter). Nice way to make comparisons.

"Teachers are always afraid that their students will know more than them about the technology. In my opinion, students are more aptly called digital tourists than digital natives. They are exploring this unknown territory at the same time as we are. The only difference is that most students are usually not afraid to push every button. As adults we like directions and are often afraid to traverse unknown territory without a map. My advice? Let go and have fun - let the journey through technology integration be more about learning and less about control."

"Imagine if we taught pilots to fly without ever letting them in a cockpit. Or gave them the keys to a commercial airplane without the required hours-or years-of hands on training and practice. Sure, we'd show them plenty of PowerPoint presentations and make them sit through a few seminars on the theory and physics of flight, but then we'd slap on a graduation cap and let them take off into the big blue sky. Rather than test your patience here with repetition of those ideas, let me refer you to them if you have a special interest. In Out of Our Minds: Learning to Be Creative, I look in some detail at the nature of creativity and how it relates to the idea of intelligence in the arts, the sciences, and other areas of human achievement. In 1997, I was asked by the U.K. government to convene a national commission to advise on how creativity can be developed throughout the school system from ages five through eighteen. That group brought together scientists, artists, educators, and business leaders in a common mission to explain the nature and critical importance of creativity in education. Our report, All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education, set our detailed proposals for how to make this happen in practice and was addressed to people working at all levels of education, from schools to government."

How can your learning network help you? By helping you to sift through all the data to identify the information that will be most useful to you. By helping you to identify learning resources and opportunities. By coaching you and answering your questions as you try to apply your learning to your work. By sharing their wisdom with you through dialogue. Building a personal learning network is requires that you not only seek to learn from others, but also that you also help others in the network learn. Even when you are a novice in a field of learning, you can still make contributions. Did you read an article that might be of interest to others? Then distribute it to other in your network with a short note that you thought they might find it interesting. Did you hear of a conference on the subject? Let others know about the program and speakers and, if you attend, circulate your notes and papers you collect to other network members. A personal learning network can be your most powerful learning tool no matter what the subject.

BlackBerry Z10 is the touchscreen version which is very similar to the other smartphones available in the market. Display with 4.2inch screen gives a resolution of 1268 x 768 pixels i.e. 768 pixels per inch. The BlackBerry Z10 is easier to use than Android and more powerful, giving faster access to e-mails, tweets, facebook updates and messages. The Z10 has 16GB on inbuilt memory. Unlike the iPhone, the BlackBerry Z10 will allow user to extend the storage with microSD card slot. It sports a chip letting the phone act as a credit card at few payment terminals and share data wirelessly when tapped against some other phones. BlackBerry Z10 comes with handsome cameras with 8MP on back and 2MP on the front. The rear camera can record is a 1080p high definition camera while the front has 720p resolution. One more good thing about the BlackBerry Z10 is its battery life. The talk time is upto 10hrs on 3G. Upto 60 hours of audio playback and 11 hours of video playback. The BlackBerry messenger (BBM) in BlackBerry Z10 includes voice calling and video chatting and allows user to share its screen with another. "Editing documents in Microsoft's Sway app is about to get a bit more friendly. An update lets you edit you create and edit content with friends and team members. Now you can share an edit link with a potential collaborator. When someone clicks on it, your sway will show up on his o her own list of content (with an icon indicated it's a shared doc). Then both people can work on the document at any time, including simultaneously."

"Apple is launching a new Measure app in iOS 12 in the next few months that will let you size anything with just your iPhone. You no longer have to go searching for a tape measure while hanging pictures or when trying to determine if a couch will fit in your living room. I recently tried the new Measure app in Apple's iOS 12 developer beta. It uses the advanced cameras on newer iPhones like the iPhone X, and will presumably work on Apple's new batch of devices coming soon. Other augmented reality apps - the type that let you interact with the real world through your phone - have been available in the iTunes App Store and for Android phones. But this is the first time Apple has introduced its own version. Here's a preview."

"As an elementary school science teacher, I find this not easy to admit, but some of my students' most rewarding and meaningful classes over the years have happened when I have taken a back seat and let my students "tinker." Whether they want to dam up a stream during a water study, build nests with mud and sticks while investigating local bird populations, or, after completing a set of Lego models, independently design and build spinning Lego tops from which energetic battles ensue, students love having time to explore and investigate independently. This fall, for example, I let a third-grade class have a "free choice period." I gave them a list of things that they could do, such as making crystals, handling pet rocks or having a dance party. Instead, they came up with their own idea: they wanted to make boats. So, I gathered materials and allowed them to use handsaws and hot glue guns (which they'd already been taught how to use safely). Of course, many teachers allow and encourage students to engage in creative play: we know that young children need the chance to explore, daydream, imagine, play and build without an outcome or even a product in mind-a place free from failure, because failure is not even part of the equation. But this often takes place outside the classroom."

"Social media overload is real. Being a connected educator can be overwhelming, especially if you have been given a ton of information at once. Some apps, like Instagram, allow you to set up this feature in the app. Other times, using a different site and/or app is more ideal. I'm sharing a few of my favorite sites and apps to manage my connections, and I'll also share one that came up repeatedly when I asked my PLN for their favorite social media management apps."
