Making Maths Meaningful with Scratch - 4 views

"We know that students learn best when content is meaningful and has a direct connection and application to their lives. However, while some maths concepts, such as telling the time or using money, can have immediate relevance, others seem to have very little application to children's daily lives. How often will 11 year old children really need to measure the size of angles, or work with cartesian graphs? I've found that teaching children to code may be part of the answer. This year, I've been teaching students in Years 2-6 to create simple arcade games using Scratch. In order for my students to be successful, they've been required to apply some core mathematical ideas that I've struggled to find a relevant use for in the past."

Math Shake for Word Problems on iPads | Class Tech Tips - 1 views

  •
"Math Shake is an engaging, playful app that helps students learn to solve word problems.  It contains thousands of questions which students turn into an equation by looking for keywords and clues in the problem. Once students have discovered the equation, they can use a variety of built-in learning tools such as number lines, tens frames, fraction pieces and counters to work our their answer. Teachers and parents can also use these tools to teach effective strategies."

Why Math Might Be The Secret To School Success | MindShift - 0 views

"Little children are big news this week, as the White House holds a summit on early childhood education December 10. The President wants every four year old to go to preschool, but the new Congress is unlikely to foot that bill. Since last year, more than 30 states have expanded access to preschool. But there's still a lack of evidence about exactly what kinds of interventions are most effective in those crucial early years. In New York City, an ambitious, $25 million dollar study is collecting evidence on the best way to raise outcomes for kids in poverty. Their hunch is that it may begin with math."

How To Teach Math With LEGOs | Edudemic - 2 views

  •
"Using Legos in the classroom is not a new concept at all. There are so many different classroom applications for the popular brightly colored bricks, and despite the myriad of uses, the go-to task for Legos is most often math. The handy little nubs sitting atop the bricks offer a chance to teach things like area and perimeter, the different colors lend themselves well to fractions. "

Could You Learn To Love Math? « Annie Murphy Paul - 1 views

"Over the three years Jordan Ellenberg was writing his book, he repeatedly encountered the same reaction to its subject. "I'd be at a party, and I'd tell someone what my book was about, and then I'd be like-'Hey, where'd you go?'" What topic was so awful and off-putting as to make people flee at its mere mention? Math." Book Review: "How Not to be Wrong" by Jordan Ellenberg
