Small Insults and Doing Gender - 1 views

Thinking of gender as an achievement
-
We usually think of gender as a set of traits (as in femininity and masculinity), a role (as in scripts for behavior), or a social variable (as in salary differences). The doing of gender discuss in this article is different than all of these. Doing gender shifts our attention away from the inner person and to the interaction, where we can see gender as an achievement. I will use this in my introductory module preceding a observation activity of watching a conversation between men and women in a social setting. The final culminating activity will be an blog reflection.

ocial psychologist Albert Mehrabian has been credited with defining the concept of immediacy in terms of his "principle of immediacy," which states "people are drawn toward persons and things they like, evaluate highly, and prefer; and they avoid or move away from things they dislike, evaluate negatively, or do not prefer" (Mehrabian, 1971).

Making Assessment Personally Relevant | blog of proximal development - 0 views

I want my students to realize that learning is not about making your work conform to some standard imposed by the teacher. Learning is about creating your own standards and adjusting them based on your goals. Learning is about setting your own goals and monitoring your own progress. It is about having conversations with yourself and others.

needed to help them visualize their progress, their level of engagement, and their sense of ownership and not simply ask them to rate their own work using the traditional percentage or letter scale. Most importantly, I wanted them to see that an entry that contains lots of facts and links to many valuable resources is not necessarily as valuable as one that shows personal engagement with ideas, one where the readers can hear a unique, personal voice.

And that's why we set objectives high, and we never set objectives in the way that they would prevent teachers [from using] their own capacity to broaden education. We only talk about the objectives, not the methods of education. Because teachers, if they have high-level education, should be given leeway enough to use their own innovation capacity.

Well, my art of midwifery is in most respects like theirs; but differs, in that I attend men and not women; and look after their souls when they are in labour, and not after their bodies: and the triumph of my art is in thoroughly examining whether the thought which the mind of the young man brings forth is a false idol or a noble and true birth

I ask questions of others and have not the wit to answer them myself

therefore I am not myself at all wise, nor have I anything to show which is the invention or birth of my own soul, but those who converse with me profit

He continues that we can face the future with confidence if we know how to teach ourselves, read between the subjective lines of media, process the vast amount of information that will be available, work collaboratively, and reaching for resources that will expand our capacities – for example a resource like this course!!

I believe that anyone can conquer fear by doing the things he fears to do, provided he keeps doing them until he gets a record of successful experience behind him.

However, to be part of the social network and be actively involve citizens, each must become life-long learners.

... and like it or not life is now technology mediated. No matter who you end up being "when you grow up" if you are not comfortable with technology, can't assess/evaluate information, can't find information when you need it, you will be at a disadvantage.
-
I agree. I am concern for the students who are not exposed to this technology. In our district, the computer teacher was laid off, yet we kept all the coaches/sports. Adults, who are not on board with the technological needs of their students, are the ones making these decisions.

The Myth Of Multitasking : NPR - 0 views
-
today's nonstop multitasking actually wastes more time than it saves
-
Today, there is so many stimuli competing for our constant attention that we are unable to resist multitasking. For example, I typically have my phone beside me and will glance at it when it vibrates or lights up, which takes me away from whatever I am doing, be it a conversation with a friend or working on graduate school work. According to https://www.apa.org/research/action/multitask.aspx I am losing time with every switch.
