  • being available and around are what I believe you define as "teaching presence." But the kind of presence I mean, or mindfulness, comes from being present (in Buddist terms), being aware of every step, listening, paying attention to details, and stepping outside of oneself to assess the learner environment and relationships within it - without bias or judgement.

      Hi Ian, I want to respond to this post (about informative posts); however I am waiting for a book to arrive so I can first learn what I want to say "backed" by research. Look for it next Monday (somehow I will fit it into something :) )

      I so agree Kimberly. I do wonder will you plan on helping your students to know how to find. My process was developed over my years working on my dissertation. My students only know Wiki. I think one of my first assignments is sending them to our college librarian for guidance, but then she will be doing the telling, and we all know how much you learn when you are told :)

  • It seems that a very informative post that does not bring in outside research to teach the class something will never receive a perfect score. That seems to be the essence of a perfect post. Search the web, search books, search resources, and bring these ideas back to the class to teach the class something.

      Hi Donna What I was implying is the students' view. After a whole semester of self-evaluation, peer evaluation, with me only grading one test worth 10% of their grade, a student thanked me for giving her an "A" I smiled and said "Did I give you an A or did you earn a A? She said "Ok I get it, I earned an A, but thanks anyway." To shift students' paradigm/perception of "the teacher" takes work!

      Hi Nicole, Thanks for the resource. I too have been thinking about my F2F these weeks also. I have a intro course up to 45 students...getting everyone to participate every class, even in small groups has been challenging. What I would like to do (but can't) is split the class in two,,,one day in class (while the other half is working online in discussion forums) and the other online (while the other group comes to class for a f2f.

  • In my f2f General Psychology class I plan on having students submit a draft of their paper, everyone exchange in class, and then together we go through the rubric. My self-regulation professor, Dr. Heidi Andrade suggested going through the rubric with student in class and having them use different colored pencils to underline sections in the paper that meet or do not meet specific rubric requirements.

  • In this course we are experiencing our teachers presence in our discussions and that is a large part of her presence in the course. She is guiding our learning by questioning our thoughts, and asking for data to back up our opinions. And we are taking part in each students learning process, by reading their posts and reading Professor Picketts response.

All educators were passion about being open in the classroom, being mindful, being compassionate, educating out of respect and not out of love for students, and delivering education that is affective.   • In doing a little research, I came across a book by Terry Anderson called, "Theory and Practice in Online Learning." He has some suggestions for giving students an outline, or what he calls an information map, at the beginning of a lesson or module. He talks about the importance of how content is presented initially, and how that affects memory.
