Get smart: Top 10 research tools - Internet - 1 views

  • By CNET staff (October 20, 2006) It's easy to suffer from information overload when the world's data is at your fingertips. What you need are tools that help you home in on the most relevant facts and organize them. We've rounded up (in random order) some great services that help you go straight to expert sources and keep track of your research. These digital tools can keep you on track--whether you're working on a middle-school science fair, wrapping up a graduate degree, or pursuing a hobby.
  • 4. Diigo beta How helpful is it to bookmark a Web site if you need only one sentence from that 3,000-word article? Diigo is a free bookmarking service that lets you do what we wish Yahoo's Del.icio.us would: highlight text and comment on Web pages. Diigo caches each site so that you can search within text, not just the topic tags. And you won't have to leave the Del.icio.us community, since Diigo lets you save bookmarks simultaneously in both places.
  • 2. Wikipedia You might shun this online, open-source encyclopedia if you've ever been burned by prank entries or fudged facts. But because anyone can edit Wikipedia, it's a richer resource than Britannica for subjects off the beaten path, such as the > 1960s underground press > or > rivethead subculture > . Though it's not the only source you should reference in term papers, at least Wikipedia gets you started. >

Bib 2.0: Before Blogs and Wikis: Three Tools to Enhance Collaboration - 0 views

  • Diigo: Once they start their web-related search, Diigo, an add-on extension for Firefox and Internet Explorer, allows students to highlight text and post sticky-notes directly onto webpages, then share their comments within the group. Others can add their own comments to the note. Selected text is archived to a "my bookmarks" page, along with the comments and a copy of the website. Students can collaborate within the bookmarks site or on the individual websites. Diigo supports RSS feeds, allowing teachers to follow student progress. The more I use this tool, the more I'm convinced it ought to be integral to every research project. It allows students to actively connect with the information they're reading--to question, annotate and infer. All in collaboration with their group. How amazing is that???

My Domestic Church: Works for me Wednesday - saving bookmarks with Diigo - 0 views

  • But Diigo had a few other features that I also enjoyed. First of all it allows me to expert and import sites with my del.icio.us account which was convenient. It also allows me to make a blog post of my finds right away. I can add tags just like with deli.cio.us and that helps me to keep organized. I can also search the finds of others using Diigo. Diigo was originally designed to be helpful to researchers so I find it to be very user friendly. But the part I REALLY enjoy, is the opportunity to HIGHLIGHT the parts of article I am reading that I find to be interesting or important. If you ever saw a book after I am done with it, you'd see highlighting all over it! I am so happy to be able to extend this habit to my web surfing! I can also add "sticky notes" with my comments on them which is akin to writing in the margins. I love doing that too!

iJump.co.nz » Change » Diigo (social bookmarking 2.0 style) - my new best friend - 0 views

  • Diigo (pronounced Dee’go) is a great social bookmarking site if you like to bookmark, highlight, put sticky notes (comments) on certain information you’re interested in when searching the web. Diigo is great for research. If you collect a lot of information like me, this is a great place to store everything. I know when I start to research a topic offline it usually means a tonne of books on the desk, bits and pieces of loose paper everywhere, writing pads, folders, paper, pens, highlighters. I think you get the image.  Diigo does all of the above and so much more online. And if that isn’t enough you can even blog from there too.  The tutorials are very clear and easy to understand.  I know I seriously sound like an infomercial right now but I think I’ve found a site I didn’t know I was looking for it.  Over the Easter break I’m locking myself away with a mission to learn how to drive it!

My Languages: Social Bookmarking: My favourite Diigo features - 1 views

  • With Diigo, you can Highlight the web and Add sticky notes too. You can also access and search your findings from any computers as well as create groups to pool resources for specific projects.Enticed by all the positive comments from my twitter network and despite being a fan of del.icio.us, I recently decided to give Diigo a try. Last year, I was already looking at Diigo as an alternative to del.icio.us but I am now convinced that del.icio.us and Diigo can really be the perfect partners. After downloading the Diigo toolbar, I transferred all my del.icio.us bookmarks to Diigo but decided to keep both to still be able to consult the bookmark recommendations from my del.icio.us network.I have now set up Diigo to save all bookmarks to del.icio.us too, which was very straight-forward. I discovered that the automatic saves were not possible from del.icio.us to Diigo but saving my bookmarks from Diigo to del.icio.us meant that I did not have alter the tags published on My Languages blog.
  • I like the fact the each Diigo user has a profile, which makes networking a lot easier and personal. There is also a facility to join groups with similar interests in order to share bookmarks and directly send messages to “friends”. Yours and your friends’ recent bookmarks are listed as well as a list of recent visitors to your profile. The bookmarks can be public, private, tagged and untagged and there is a facility to share them as well as comments about them with friends and different groups.Diigo groups are god to share resources and good practice. They are made up of people who choose to join others who have common interests
  • The tags can be sorted by my usage and by community usage and are also a way to connect with people with similar interests. Likewise, the reader community for your favourite sites can be checked out easily and this can also be a way to enlarge your circle of “friends”. You can also Subscribe to the most recent bookmarks by tags, sites, or users, which is a great way to keep track of the latest information on topics you are interested in.

  • Last but not least, I have noticed how well Diigo works with twitter and some people who request to be friends on Diigo first can end up being part of your twitter network as well.

Web Trends - Diigo: Another Del.icio.us? - 0 views

  • Diigo: Another Del.icio.us? by Jason Hahn Diigo (pronounced “deego”) is a brand new social annotation site.  Social annotation is “a superset of social bookmarking,” the site (www.diigo.com) says.  It is similar to del.icio.us in that it is a social bookmarking tool, and even uses the del.icio.us API to give users the ability to simultaneously tag sites on both their Diigo and del.icio.us accounts. The key differentiation between Diigo and del.icio.us is in the specialized annotation features of Diigo.  Users can highlight specific paragraphs or images on a page and post either public or private sticky notes that can be shared with other users who can choose to respond to your sticky notes.  These annotations can be saved for later review and can also be forwarded through e-mail. This further capability and functionality of specialized annotation features is primarily achieved through the Diigo toolbar.  The toolbar allows the user to search through numerous resources and also allows the user to bookmark sites of interest.  The Inbox on the toolbar lets users keep up-to-date with their tags. Though this may put Diigo in contention with del.icio.us, these two sites can also be seen as complements to one another.  Regardless, it seems that social bookmarking is quickly becoming a battleground that leaves the door open to new competitors with fresh ideas, and that annotation may become a key to success in the arena.

  • Diigo is what surfing should have always been like. Diigo is a combination of many things together, social bookmarking, storing clippings, annotations, tagging, search, sticky notes and sharing of this information with others. It’s a great to store private web snippets.
