The Internet of Things should be its own category on Kickstarter, since there's yet another project on the site that hopes to connect your physical and digital worlds. But its real promise may be in providing context to computers that will evolve into new user interfaces. Guess what! There's another Kickstarter project that pushes the Internet of Things forward in a fun way. For as little as $10 you could pledge money to SmartThings, which wants to develop sensors and an application environment that lets people who may not be comfortable programming an Arduino board tie the physical world to their virtual one.

Today, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Chief Digital Officer Rachel Haot unveiled the city's 2012 Digital Roadmap, which follows the success of last year's 2011 digital roadmap. This initiative was created to share NYC's past success in digital and tech initiatives, and to simultaneously "spur the development of" the city's tech scene. According to the release, 80 percent of the objectives that NY established last year are now complete. This includes everything from rapid expansion of WiFi-serviced parks and the city's Big Apps competition to the nearly 5.5M individuals reached by government social media channels. As you might expect, plenty of boasting was done, especially when it comes to NY's recent growth as a tech hub. Check out the related infographics here. What's next? As far as the city's next steps go, the graphic below shows the direction which NY hopes to head. Specific areas of improvement include expanded broadband connectivity, mobile payments in taxis, a new NYC.gov site, live broadcasted city council hearings and more.

Best of the Web honors governments whose websites demonstrate innovation, usability and maximum functionality for users. Best of the Web honorees have sites that also contribute to governmental efficiency by contributing to effective service delivery. Submissions from U.S. cities, counties and states were judged by executives from the Center for Digital Government, along with a panel of past Best of the Web winners."

The Civic Commons is a new way to bring communities together with conversation and emerging technology. We provide the place and tools for citizens to connect with and inform one another and to take action. It's a bit like a virtual pub or coffee house, where citizens and officials can gather to talk about community issues, brainstorm solutions, coordinate plans --  and maybe even have fun and meet new people along the way.    We take some of our inspiration from Clay Shirky's book, Cognitive Surplus, which explores how communities of people can pool small amounts of their spare time, say 10 minutes a week,  to accomplish great things.  With this in mind, we've constructed our website to enable our community members to leverage their efforts into collective greatness.  Wiki-greatness, if you like.

Hard to believe, but Steve Jobs resigned from Apple almost exactly a year ago and died just a little over a month later. Happily for the company he founded, Apple has continued to prosper. Warnings that Apple would collapse without his leadership have been off the mark - at least so far. Apple reached another milestone this week when its valuation reached $621.64 billion making it the most-valuable company ever, at least measured in 2012 dollars. While there's some dispute about whether Apple actually broke Microsoft's 1999 record (factoring in for inflation, Apple still appears to have some way to go), this infographic, from Statista, shows just how dominant Apple is today.

"Lors de son discours consacré aux perspectives économiques du 29 novembre 2011 (Autumn Statement), le Chancelier de l'Echiquier, George Osborne, a annoncé la création d'un Open Data Institute (ODI) dédié à la recherche et à l'innovation sur les données ouvertes. Le gouvernement participera au financement du projet à hauteur de 10 M£ sur cinq ans, à côté d'autres investisseurs venant de l'industrie et des universités."

Deloitte a publié une étude affirmant que l'open data apportera à l'économie du Royaume-Uni non seulement croissance, mais aussi innovation et ingéniosité. Selon ce rapport, l'écosystème open data a des implications fondamentales pour le futur des affaires et la nature des relations client. La tendance vers une plus grande offre et un plus grand usage de l'open data sera irrésistible, obligeant les entreprises à concevoir de nouveaux modèles commerciaux. Elles devront en tirer de meilleurs enseignements, mais aussi développer de nouvelles façons d'échanger avec les parties prenantes et ainsi permettre aux bénéfices économiques et sociaux de l'open data d'émerger.

David Sacks of Yammer wonders if Silicon Valley - meaning the venture-backed bastion of innovation and wealth creation in the Bay Area - has started to lose it's mojo. His argument - more of a handwave really - is that a/ the economics don't work in a system with such large incumbents (like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, etc.), b/ partly because todays agile, ramen-fueld startups don't have the cash to effectively compete against the incumbents, and c/ the number of ideas that can be juiced into existence given that context are few.

Every year, the Information Security Oversight Office reports to the President the estimated costs of securing the nation's classified information. Expenditures can include anything from salaries and security clearances for personnel accessing the sensitive documents to computer equipment and training programs for government employees. In 2011, that total cost was nearly $11.4 billion-more than double the budget from just ten years ago.
