Bill Streeter addresses the situation of a lack in financial literacy among young people in the United States. He offers information that shows how serious of a problem financial literacy is and that education of financial literacy is the solution to the problem. He puts in his own ideas and believes that banks, organizations, and associations need to help the issue at hand.

Article from Kansas City Gazette. Describes a bill proposal to increase financial knowledge in the US. The problem specifically lies with young adults and college students. It provides statistics as well as some startling facts to the problems with credit card debt and financial literacy.

The authors Cartledge and Lo explain the discipline problems teacher's deal with in Urban Schools. Many factors influence children in urban school districts to act up in the classroom. They conducted a research program where they selected school H, which consisted of low-income students that were not reaching academic standards. The program recorded the number of disciplinary actions teachers took towards the students. The results showed that more than 50% of students received discipline in one year of teaching, which takes away from their education time. The authors make some significant points, but more can be determined from this study. By looking at the study, people can infer that because of the high disciplinary problems in urban schools that it affects their academics. This can be because of their lives at home and what students go through with their families.

Due to the economic problems of today's society, governements are looking for possible solutions to help solve this problem. This article discusses steps that governements in the United Kingdom have already started. The most important of these steps is financial literacy education programs that are being implemented.

Hill and Barth discuss the Federal Government's attempt to raise student achievement, especially in standardized testing, with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The NCLB's intent was to limit academic achievement gaps in students who are minorities, disabled, financially disadvantaged, or limited English proficiency. One of the biggest problems that has arisen from the law is teacher retention. The NCLB requires highly qualified teachers, but all the highly qualified teachers are not staying. The authors focus on this huge problem of teacher retention.

The article discusses financial-literacy programs at universities and colleges in the United States. Programs like Texas Tech University's help its students master the basics of budgeting, saving, and not buying what they can't afford. These programs are especially important as colleges grapple with rising costs and an economic downturn in the country. The author states that financial literacy affects student retention, productivity, and mental health, and may also generate good will in a time when colleges are being criticized for repeatedly raising tuition, fees, and housing costs. The article focuses on the problem of college debt and knowledge about financial terms. It also goes into discussion of what some universities are doing to help this problem by offering classes/seminars. Valuable article.

This article, available in PDF format through EBSCO, discusses the problem of "financial aliteracy." Most Americans have limited knowledge of strategies for saving and investing. This is a timely topic, given the current problems on Wall Street.

Health literacy is basic reading and numerical skills that allow a person to function in the health care environment. Even though most adults read at an eighth-grade level, and 20 percent of the population reads at or below a fifth-grade level, most health care materials are written at a 10th-grade level. Older patients are particularly affected because their reading and comprehension abilities are influenced by their cognition and their vision and hearing status. Inadequate health literacy can result in difficulty accessing health care, following instructions from a physician, and taking medication properly. Patients with inadequate health literacy are more likely to be hospitalized than patients with adequate skills. Patients understand medical information better when spoken to slowly, simple words are used, and a restricted amount of information is presented. For optimal comprehension and compliance, patient education material should be written at a sixth-grade or lower reading level, preferably including pictures and illustrations. All patients prefer reading medical information written in clear and concise language. Physicians should be alert to this problem because most patients are unwilling to admit that they have literacy problems. (Am Fam Physician 2005;72:463-8. The author in this article explains that there needs to be a solution to find how to close the achievement gap. They thought that more programs for the children would decrease the problem, but it is still a problem today. The author came up with that if parents get more involved in their childrens school work, then theie achievement will increase.

This article gives insight on the association of marijuana and tobacco use. This is a major connection between these two because of the social similarities. They talk about the risks associated with smoking tobacco and marijuana and how with alcohol use these risks increase. With marijuana use on the rise many health related problems associated with cigarettes and alcohol are increasing. With statistical data taken this alcohol and tobacco problems are increasing yearly. This article give me some important insight on the relation of tobacco and marijuana use. There are many relations with alcohol consumption and tobacco use but marijuana and tobacco use are also very closely related. Tobacco use among Whites in regards to race is much higher than it is with Blacks and Hispanics. This is some important statistical information closely related to my topic. Tobacco and marijuana use are closely related.

This article takes into account 292 college students and discusses social norms and other negative effects of marijuana. They take into account social-environmental and biopsy logical factors of use. Also they talk about risk factor associated with different uses of the drug. There is also some statistical information that accesses they amount and number of college students that use or have used marijuana. This is a very supportive article because it give me some insight on the risk of marijuana and marijuana related problems. There is some good statistical information relating to the 292 college students. The stats state that 46% of college students have claimed to have smoked marijuana. With this article it can help support some of my statistical information from my survey I have put out.

This entry is about how bullying affects children at a young age. Since i am doing my study on discourse communities it is interesting to look this over and keep in mind some of the things it brings up. This is especially true since in my example of my own roomates, bullying doies happen quite a bit. The only problem is that this talks about your students 4-5th grade, but i still find info pertaining to college level kids as well.

A major problem with the ever growing population of the elderly is their children's financial literacy. It is important that the children of aging parents are proactive and get involved with their parents financial matters. Children need to be aware of the government funded programs as well as the financial strategies that their parents can qualify for based upon their age. There are often outside factors that contribute to complications of sorting out financial documents and dollar figures and children of the aging need to be aware of these issues as well as the help that is available to them.

Marijuana is heavily repressed in the United States. There is repeated documentation that there are lower risks associated with marijuana use compared to alcohol consumption. Also our government spends billions of dollars yearly to fight the war on drug/marijuana. Socially the United States needs to reform laws to accommodate social and economic disputes. This article effectively attacks the problem in the United States with marijuana laws. This article entails the health risks and economic issues that can be resolved with legalization or decriminalization of marijuana. Medical documentation gives evidence of lower health risks with marijuana compared to alcohol.

The Author suggests that many of Americans Financial difficulties are brought about as a result of a lack of self-regulation. A lack of financial literacy can hit lower-income families the hardest because of their ability to be exploited. Consumers with lack of financial knowledge find themselves caught up in short term benefits rather than long term benefits. Proper knowledge of strategies would enable many individuals to avoid problems and better prepare themselves for the future by protecting themselves in the present.

Radford discusses in his article algebraic thinking and how students use signs with meanings in algebraic generalization of problems and also students' developing algebraic thinking. The author also examines different signs and their meanings then further discusses how these meanings affect students and their developing algebraic thinking. He also goes over different classroom discussions that took place regarding algebraic thinking. This article has many important points about the development of mathematical thinking but would not be excessively useful to analyze subject based thinking.

In this article the authors go over several studies that they conducted dealing with giving young children different materials to play with and having them observe different activities. The authors examined the results that they found and concluded how the children would react or how they were more inclined to act based on how they thought. This is interesting based on the different way the children acted and if this has anything to do with what subjects they would be better at.

This is a panel discussion in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges that aims to address the issues associated with the advent of readily available multi-core and clustered computing systems. Moore's law has driven microprocessor architects to design platforms that exploit the performance gain of multi-core processors. The problem resides in the fact that many computer science curricula do not touch upon parallel computing because while the fundamentals may be relatively basic, other aspects of the technology is extremely difficult for students to understand and implement. However, this is the direction computer systems are headed and something must be done to utilize this technology to its fullest extent.

The authors of this article tried to generate search technology to view library resources; however, they found a number of problems. Because of these struggles, they conducted an experiment comparing Organ State University Libraries design to Google Scholar. They use volunteers to conduct research in an efficient and effective way to discover the reliability of each student. They used both qualitative and quantitative data to determine how Google compares to other search engines. This article also presents charts and tables that make understanding the experimental result with more ease.
