This article takes into account 1123 high school students and access their use and abuse of alcohol and marijuana. They take into account the accessibility of drugs among students. Race does play a role showing higher accessibility and use among Hispanic students compared to white students. Many drugs are used and obtained on campus' and many students are unaware of this issue. This article gives me more insight on alcohol and drug use. This helps me obtain more broad information of policies and usage of drugs among high school and college students. This article with present information of the attitudes and frequency of drug and alcohol use among students. With this information I have much better insight on the ways and uses of college students during school.

Pearce conducted research throughout the country of New Zealand. The purpose was to study the relationships between how easily accessible fast-food restaurants are to the consumer and the effects of having a proper recommended nutritional diet. Surprisingly, this study suggested that neighborhood access to fast-food restaurants is not a likely factor in unhealthy diets. I may not use this study in my research paper, as I feel that it does not provide conclusive "either or" results.

It discusses how often college student use the internet and internet search engines such as Google on an almost daily basis. It also suggests that different backgrounds and racial groups have different access to the internet. Of the individuals that use the internet it describes what websites they use the most including Yahoo and Google, Library websites, news websites, and online encyclopedias. This article gives an accurate description of how many college students use the internet and what they use it for; however, it does not describe how reliable these websites are.

This article is about how mindfulness meditation is increasingly recognized as a health promotion practice. It also discusses how it is being integrated into colleges in order to enhance learning. The author also believes that these trends provide the opportunity to develop an experimental curriculum to teach this that would emphasize accessibility across economic, religious, and ethnic groups.

Despite the refutation of intelligent design as legitimate science by the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, eighteen states have suggested the introduction of antievolution legislation (as of 2005). In the wake of this movement, librarians, the ultimate guardians of knowledge, may face challenges of censorship by religious conservatives. Suppressing access to information is in direct conflict with democratic ideals. This article contains specific advice for librarians regarding the protection of diverse resources. Although the O'Sullivans write to a specific audience, their message is indicative of the relationship between censorship and literacy.

The teaching of such a controversial social issue as evolution in the classroom presents difficulties to instructors, both on personal and professional levels. Griffith and Brem examined fifteen Arizona biology teachers, pulling their experiences from focus groups, interviews, and surveys. The study contains a great deal of anecdotal information dealing with both internal and external influences on instructors' teaching methods. This research investigates a whole new realm of the issue as it pertains to literacy by looking directly at those who control the flow of information and those who influence it. However, the researchers make little conclusive headway, suggesting simply that instructors should be made more comfortable with the topic by having access to better information and resources. Ultimately, the personal experiences are telling of the political climate and social stressors.

College students today face a difficult time with easy access to a credit card and a lack of financial literacy. The authors' study concluded that the average college student is currently accumulating debt at an increasing rate. They believe the allure and purchasing power of a credit card causes some young adults to forgo their own inhibitions and just spend. This study provides an excellent source of quantitative information in the form of survey responses and charts. The authors break down their survey group into many categories, such as age and sex, to examine debt. The plethora of data allows correlations to be made and therefore a better understanding of college student credit card debt. However, the sample size was only 448 students on five college campuses, and in the future, a larger sample size could provide a more detailed and accurate analysis.

Many teenagers today have access to credit and debit cards and until recently, there was little parents could do to monitor and restrict their children's spending. Hernandez has identified a new prepaid card by Discover that aims to give parents more control over their children's spending habits. The prepaid card allows parents to restrict and actively monitor their teenager's credit card use. For a small monthly fee, parents can effectively control all aspects of their child's card and even restrict purchases of inappropriate material. Discover's prepaid card offers parents and teenagers an opportunity to enjoy the conveniences of a credit/debit card with relative safety.

Beverly shares the importance of improving and focusing on the expansion of financial education practices in regards to our countries youth. Students may underestimate the need for financial education. The recommendation for social workers is to encourage the incorporation of financial education in the elementary and middle school curriculums as well as high school. Beverly believes that to ensure universal access, financial education should be a mandate for high schools. The integration of financial education into school curriculums has been recommended by the U.S. Office of Financial Education.

Health literacy is basic reading and numerical skills that allow a person to function in the health care environment. Even though most adults read at an eighth-grade level, and 20 percent of the population reads at or below a fifth-grade level, most health care materials are written at a 10th-grade level. Older patients are particularly affected because their reading and comprehension abilities are influenced by their cognition and their vision and hearing status. Inadequate health literacy can result in difficulty accessing health care, following instructions from a physician, and taking medication properly. Patients with inadequate health literacy are more likely to be hospitalized than patients with adequate skills. Patients understand medical information better when spoken to slowly, simple words are used, and a restricted amount of information is presented. For optimal comprehension and compliance, patient education material should be written at a sixth-grade or lower reading level, preferably including pictures and illustrations. All patients prefer reading medical information written in clear and concise language. Physicians should be alert to this problem because most patients are unwilling to admit that they have literacy problems. (Am Fam Physician 2005;72:463-8. This is a great article for me because I can use this statistical information against alcohol use and it more negative effects rather than marijuana negative effects. There is a lot more interesting statistical data I can use to show evidence of marijuana usage compared to alcohol use. Alcohol use compared to marijuana are a lot different alcohol in the long run is a lot worse for humans. Marijuana is a lot more laid back drug with no dependence.

This is a very supportive article because it give me some insight on the risk of marijuana and marijuana related problems. There is some good statistical information relating to the 292 college students. The stats state that 46% of college students have claimed to have smoked marijuana. With this article it can help support some of my statistical information from my survey I have put out.
