Murnane focuses on the children living in poverty and the low performance of the students. His goal is to make the No Child Left Behind Act more realistic. The goal should be to concentrate on the children's growth as a student, not to reach an obtainable test score. The government needs to improve conditions of schools of children living in poverty. The author suggests that the poverty stricken schools need to strengthen their staff in order to change anything. The main goal of children living in poverty is to get them to graduate from high school. The rate of kids graduating from high school in low income schools is down a great deal of percent than suburban schools. Murnane gives his opinion of setting obtainable goals not only for middle class students, but students that come from a poverty stricken area.

Kraus proposes a reform program that will reform low-income Minneapolis schools. Then he observes how urban schools attract low-income students and creates a problem of low achievement in these types of schools. This reform wanted no school to have more than 70% of any racial or minority group. He noticed that students in urban schools have lower test scores, so in order to change this they are implementing transfer programs into suburban schools. Most students showed improvement and to test their improvement the students were assessed. This program may improve academic achievement in some schools, but it does not exactly improve urban schools.

The authors Cartledge and Lo explain the discipline problems teacher's deal with in Urban Schools. Many factors influence children in urban school districts to act up in the classroom. They conducted a research program where they selected school H, which consisted of low-income students that were not reaching academic standards. The program recorded the number of disciplinary actions teachers took towards the students. The results showed that more than 50% of students received discipline in one year of teaching, which takes away from their education time. The authors make some significant points, but more can be determined from this study. By looking at the study, people can infer that because of the high disciplinary problems in urban schools that it affects their academics. This can be because of their lives at home and what students go through with their families.

The research found by the author focuses on college students and how they choose the foods they eat at the food courts on college campuses. It only includes sixteen students at one college but the author finds very important information concerning food selection. They focus upon college students because it is the time of transition from childhood to adulthood.

The author of this article talks about the No Child Left Behind law and how it can help urban city students. This law wants to help students raise their reading and math scores. He has also done a research study that brought in Supplemental Educational Serives and it was desgined to raise achievement levels of students throught tutoring programs. They found that one-on-one tutoring was very productive to the students.

In this article it brings up a very good point on how if a teacher is absent, then it will effect the students in their classroom. Some teachers are better than others and that could also effect the students. This study shows that 5-6% are absent days while school is in session. When teachers do take off of work, its hard for the schools to find good substitutes and it then leads to a day of no learning for the students.

This article talks about marijuana and other drugs use and rise among college students. There is a sample of 119 schools that consist of different demographics. There is different samples that take into account social usage of the drug and other illicit uses of the drug among college students. This was sample taken to monitor the use of marijuana and other drugs among college students. Rates are higher in public institutions compared to private institutions. This is good insight on the uses of marijuana and how it relates to different college and demographics in collegiate atmospheres. These surveys will help support my statistical information needed to present better understanding of this information. With this in mind there are other things that I will be using in my research to back up the information in my paper. With a well rounded institution like Harvard I understand how the insight will perform in my paper.

This article is about how when parents increase their involvment in their child's school, this creates a better relationship between the student and teacher. With this new relationship also bring better literacy and math skills for the student. The students change their attitude about school and actually want to go. This is why it important for low income families to get involved in the schools.

This article discusses the internet habits of college students during the early twenty first century. It discusses how often college student use the internet and internet search engines such as Google on an almost daily basis. It also suggests that different backgrounds and racial groups have different access to the internet. Of the individuals that use the internet it describes what websites they use the most including Yahoo and Google, Library websites, news websites, and online encyclopedias. This article gives an accurate description of how many college students use the internet and what they use it for; however, it does not describe how reliable these websites are.

This article describes a curriculum designed to assist 64 post baccalaureate minority students in developing and practicing a stress-management technique. Students participated in deep breathing meditation exercises in two classes and they completed surveys before and after as well as follow-up surveys each academic year. This article concluded that this technique provided the students with a promising solution for academic and professional situations.

The author discuses how students researches have begun to diverge from the library for quite some time now and Google Scholar is just more evidence of this. He describes how the lack of student tendency to use the library has struck fear into both university faculty and librarians. He then discusses a number of different approaches that colleges and universities are taking. Some have a strict no Google Scholar, others do not dismiss or endorse it, posting agendas that point users towards the library, and some accept Google Scholar as good enough for student use. This article describes what researchers desire and the ability of Google Scholar to provide this information.

Specifically they address credit cards and student loans. They also speak of how certified public accountants are great educators for this problem. A valuable article to relate Accounting classes for students and their financial literacy.

The students in urban schools were put through programs to help thier knowledge and to challenge them. The students of the school were to take classes on technology to help further technology because of how much we use it today. This will help students further thier knowledge and help them grow as an individual.

The authors share the difference of how the education gap between minority and low-income students compares to the fortunate white students. These low-income students are usually seen in urban schools that are at a disadvantage because of their label as a "failing school". The authors conduct a chart that shows the number of free or reduced lunches, percent of minority students, the student teacher ratio and the percent of poverty rate of failing schools, choice schools and the mean difference in schools in North Carolina. The rates in failing schools were substantially higher than the ones in choice schools. This process was only conducted in North Carolina, but it would be very similar for all states.

The authors research the effects of public school choice in the state of South Carolina under the No Child Left Behind Act. It has been found that public schools are labeled "in need of improvement" if there is a large minority of students and a large amount of poverty independent of rural, suburban, or urban location. The article touches on all the spatial aspects of the academic achievement gap between public schools and how rural failing schools are the most disadvantaged. The research in the article is useful but it is limited to the state of South Carolina.

This article and author brings up many good points that the American people do not usually see. They start off by saying how the No Child Le Behind Act was implemented to help students get a good education and a fair one. The author then goes into how it has failed to meet the requirements and is supporting inequality. the idea of this act is not to bring attention to the economic problems with students, but to help the students achieve a quality education.

The Authors of this article have conducted a study on 710 college students who were taking Pre-Calculus class. They were split into a controlled group, and a test group. The control group took the course using basic technology, and text books. The test group used graphics calculators and textbooks geared towards learning with graphics calculators. At the end of the course the students were required to take a comprehensive exam. The results showed that the students who took the course with the graphics calculators scored much higher than those who took the course in the traditional fashion. This study was conducted over a period of three semesters, and will prove very useful in my argumentation.

Forster discusses how teaching with a graphics calculator can help a student understand the concepts of certain graphs, and how graphs are formed. One graph specifically mentioned is the scatter plot graph, and how it is applied to functions. She also discusses how after learning these concepts on a graphics calculator, students were able to graph by hand easier without the help of the instructor. A study was conducted and explained within the classroom setting. This article while limited in the size of study shows how the use of graphics calculators can help students in the understanding of certain math concepts.

This artical is about how students perceive other students when it comes to academics. In short is shows how much they use peer reviews to help further their education. I thought this is cool because it also shows how in communites one can go to another for help and benefit from it, it also shows the importance of friends and other peers when it comes to academics.

This study can be beneficial to my research. One of the purposes of this study was to examine the preferences of college students when given crackers with 2 different kinds of cream cheese, being high-fat and low-fat, spread on it. The results were not shocking, as students favored the taste of the high-fat cream cheese over the low-fat cream cheese. I could use these findings to support my research in that taste plays an important factor in food selection.
