    The article addresses the idea of "religious illiteracy" in the United States as of early 2007. The author relates the lack of general religious knowledge among his students at Boston University. He believes that religious illiteracy is more dangerous than cultural illiteracy because religion is the "most volatile" constituent of culture. He notes that some knowledge of the world's religions is essential in processing messages from politicians, the media, and education. He believes that, in the interest of civics, all U.S. undergraduate students should be required to take an academic religious studies course. He also acknowledges that religious literacy in the U.S. requires compromise between the secular left and the religious right. (Abstract from EBSCO.)

She had a consultant come in to try and help her students with reading. he believed that building a relationship was necessary and to do before and post background information was necessary also. They then go into talking about how the No Child Left behind Act is sometimes hard to meet the requirements and many students may not meet them.

They start off by saying how the No Child Le Behind Act was implemented to help students get a good education and a fair one. The author then goes into how it has failed to meet the requirements and is supporting inequality. the idea of this act is not to bring attention to the economic problems with students, but to help the students achieve a quality education.

    The Authors of this article have conducted a study on 710 college students who were taking Pre-Calculus class. They were split into a controlled group, and a test group. The control group took the course using basic technology, and text books. The test group used graphics calculators and textbooks geared towards learning with graphics calculators. At the end of the course the students were required to take a comprehensive exam. The results showed that the students who took the course with the graphics calculators scored much higher than those who took the course in the traditional fashion. This study was conducted over a period of three semesters, and will prove very useful in my argumentation.

One issue that sets this article apart from the other articles is its assessment of how students are required by most schools to purchase their own calculators. This article analyzes the effect this can have on how the class should be taught, and how calculators put students at advantages and disadvantages depending on how they are used, and how students with more computing power excelled or failed compared to those with the less powerful model of calculator.

One of the biggest problems that has arisen from the law is teacher retention. The NCLB requires highly qualified teachers, but all the highly qualified teachers are not staying. The authors focus on this huge problem of teacher retention.

Research suggests that personal finance courses have not improved student financial literacy. Lewis Mandell suggest that students should be taught about finance and savings at an earlier age than high school.

    It is shocking to see the statistic that almost 2/3 of individuals over the age of 50, still in the working environment, have not thought about their retirement. This failure to plan has lead Americans to financial illiteracy. Almost half of people in the workforce are unaware of pension and retirement funds that they as employees qualify for. The author suggests requiring proper planning aid information upon new employee orientation, educational programs as well as a personal incentive for individuals to think and plan for the future.

    In 2007, the Oklahoma Legistalure passed a law called "The Passport to Financial Literacy Act" that requires students, beginning in the 7th grade, to demonstarate "financial proficiency in 14 areas" to acheive a high school diploma. Other schools with the help of the National Endowment Fund for Financial Education have incorporated programs to increase the levels of financial literacy among students. Critics of this program state that these prgrams are not helping the overall financial literacy levels of high school students upon completion. It is not plausable to state that these financial programs are useless, because these programs need to work in correcpendence of parents teaching their children good financial habits within their own homes.

    There are ways for students to gain financial literacy and this article is mentions plans for student programs to help do this. The article talks about how some finance classes don't help a students understanding of finances, and mentions to have financial literacy it might have to begin in a person's childhood.
