Google's investment is part of a broad movement toward "cloud computing," a literally hazy term for a concept that takes outsourcing, software as a service, and similar rent-don't-own trends to their logical conclusion. Think of it as a ubiquitous Wi-Fi hotspot that can satisfy all of a company's computing needs, from software applications to data to communications and collaboration. No more data centers; everything you need is "out there" in the cloud, accessible for a fee. Or fees.

Scholars, advertisers and political activists see massive online social networks as a representation of social interactions that can be used to study the propagation of ideas, social bond dynamics and viral marketing, among others. But the linked structures of social networks do not reveal actual interactions among people. Scarcity of attention and the daily rhythms of life and work makes people default to interacting with those few that matter and that reciprocate their attention. A study of social interactions within Twitter reveals that the driver of usage is a sparse and hidden network of connections underlying the "declared" set of friends and followers.

I constantly meet really smart non-technical people -- doctors, lawyers, teachers -- who have no clue how computers work. Citizen journalism refers to a wide range of activities in which everyday people contribute information or commentary about news events. With the birth of digital technologies, people now have unprecedented access to the tools of production and dissemination. Citizen journalism epitomizes the belief that the experiences of people personally involved with an issue present a different -- and often more complete -- picture of events than can be derived from the perspective of an outsider. Citizen journalism encompasses content ranging from user-submitted reviews on a Web site about movies to wiki-based news. It forces contributors to think objectively, asking probing questions and working to understand the context -- the kinds of activities that lead to deeper learning.

The rSmart Group, Inc. (rSmart) today announced they have been selected by Rhode Island Network for Educational Technology, Inc. (RINET) and its consortium membership made up of RI's K-12 schools and districts to implement and support the statewide initiative to make ePortfolios available to all K-12 students by 2008. RINET will support the rSmart OSP ePortfolio(TM) to improve RI districts' ability to monitor and measure student performance and progress while allowing individual students to demonstrate skills, knowledge and abilities.

As the phrase suggests, it is the telling of stories using Web 2.0 tools, technologies, and strategies. Since the name is fairly recent (and not yet widely used), it may not bear out as the best term for this trend. Another name may emerge, one better suited to describing this narrative domain. However, the term seems to have met with quiet acknowledgment to date, so it may serve as a useful one going forward.

Welcome to the workspace for the Horizon Project. This space is a place for the members of the Horizon Project Advisory Board to manage the process of selecting the topics for the 2009 Horizon Report, which will be co-published by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) and will be released publicly January, 2009.
