D #2 HW #2 Four Principles of Effective Logo Design - 1 views

  •
This site is really simple but offers some good points about designing effective logos. The textbook offers an example of logo design, so I wanted to explore some more information. According to this site, there are four main principles: the logo should be simple, versatile, memorable, and relevant. One good point the author made was that most of the top corporate companies use only one or two colors in their logo. A logo must also be expected to appear in many different formats, ranging from a billboard designed to be seen from a distance to a logo etched onto a pencil.

TWC 301 Definitions of Rhetoric D#2 (5) - 0 views

  • persuasive
  • EthosEthos is appeal based on the character of the speaker. An ethos-driven document relies on the reputation of the author. Go to an example of an ethos-based site, and our explanation of what it is.
  • LogosLogos is appeal based on logic or reason. Documents distributed by companies or corporations are logos-driven. Scholarly documents are also often logos-driven. Go to an example of an logos-based site, and our explanation.

  • PathosPathos is appeal based on emotion. Advertisements tend to be pathos-driven. Go to an example of an pathos-based site, and our explanation.

Wow cool, you found the same one as me. I thought I was unique. I have taken so many classes with rhetoric I didn't want a dictionary definition.

John, I like this link and there is another link that is similar as stating the three audiences appeals: logos, pathos, and ethos as well as the five canons of rhetoric: the invention or discovery, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Check it out.....http:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetoric Carlos L.

Here are my four definitions I have found for Rhetoric: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rhetoric -this provides a very basic & general definition of Rhetoric http://www.stanford.edu/dept/english/courses/sites/lunsford/pages/defs.htm -i found this web page interesting being that it shows the great minds of our people & how they used Rhetoric http://www.rpi.edu/dept/llc/webclass/web/project1/group4/index.html -this web page explains Aristotle view on Rhetoric but the interesting part is how Ethos, Pathos & Logos is used within the definition.

Thanks John for the clearing up, Im still in the learning process of things in this course :) Georgina: great minds think alike! thats great that we are on the same page!

My List: A Collection on "Definitions of Rhetoric or Rhetorical" (TWC,301,RHETORIC) | D... - 1 views

All three websites both describe rhetoric as a persuasive and effective form of speech. The use of rhetoric is when you want a favorable outcome in your favor. Through logos, pathos, and ethos rhetorical persuasion is possible. One website goes into more depth than the other two about what logos, pathos, and ethos is. Logos is the use of induction, pathos is creating an emotional link, and ethos is being viewed as trustworthy. This website explains how it is better to be open minded and create shared opinions, because then both sides can have something to agree on if they both have different views on the main topic. The Webster definition describes how this style of communication is ancient and dates back to the 14th century. Rhetoric can be performed with both speaking and writing persuasively. Free dictionary explains how rhetoric is more about the end result and not so much the process getting there.

Creative Brainstorming: 50 Examples of The Logo Design Process - Noupe Design Blog - 1 views

This was my favorite article that I found relating and supporting Chapter 1 because it was very visual. In each picture the design process for the individual logos were clearly demonstrated and it was interesting to see the possibilities that were not choosen. Chapter 1 explains the amount of prep work and thought that happens all before a simple design can become realized.

I love the simplicity of this site. It has the skeleton of a normal site around the edges, but then smack dab in the center there is what looks like it could be a page straight out of a comic book. It definitely makes it look like you're in the right place. The makers of this site put emphasis on the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer logo. The logo leads you to the left side of the page where the Editor has his comments and then the eye can wander around the rest of the page for the information they came for.

This section here reminds me of ch. 2 where it talks about good writing enhances a writer's reputation. A writer uses these appeals to their audiences so they can be persuasive and trusted.
  •
Ethos (Credibility), or ethical appeal, means convincing by the character of the author. Pathos (Emotional) means persuading by appealing to the reader's emotions. Logos (Logical) means persuading by the use of reasoning

This website uses many example of contrast. The font used in a few locations on the site gives you the southwest, frontier look. While other fonts are less stated they serve the purpose of peripheral information. I love the fire on the top left of the website, that brings attention to the logo of the restaurant. Many times in websites the company logo is in t he top left as this one, but they get lost because they are small.

I think this is an important concept that the text misses. I feel that it important to celebrate and share your secesses with family and close friends. It helps build your self esteem and makes it easier to want to do it again.

I thought this site gave really good examples for web designs. It is particularly useful for me and the group because we are starting project one. Its gives good ideas on objects like logos, headers and how web sites/ pages should use correct contrast.

This website demonstrates repetition because it repeats the logo twice, right next to each other - just in different sizes.

Moviefone is another example of balance, the logo "Moviefone" is large and tilted - making it what your eye is drawn to. But, the menu is to the left (the site has an asymmetrical balance). But somehow the asymmetrical idea of this website totally works and is visually pleasing.

I think this site shows balance because of its asymmetrical elements. The logo and title is to the right and the menu is to the left, but not equal. The display of the product is symmetrical right through the center. It's an example of the "focus achieving a harmonious balance."

The irony here is so thick I can't believe it. I am currently renovating a hotel in Hollywood and one of the improvements is the parking area. It's a 1930's building that is getting a face lift, hardscape and landscape. In the hard scape the Architect specified that we embed movie quotes using aluminum letters in 8 locations. The irony is that deadline 4 covers this exact situation, the quotes are protected by copyrights!

Contrast: White background, main story in the center of the page. Summary of story underneath with related links smaller, different colored text to bottom right. Repetition: All links are colored blue and all bullet points and listing numbers are purple. Yahoo sites in the menu are all black with thumbnail pictures. Titles for each grouping box are in black capital letters with subtitles in grey. Alignment: Everything aligned to the left throughout entire webpage. Proximity: Alike items are grouped into boxes with a title in black capital letters.

Follows CRAP principles. The Yahoo title and logo are both in purple. C= The whole background is white. The top news stories are posted in the top middle page. All titles are the same color. R= Yahoo it repeated throughout the site. All title colors are the same. It is uniform throughout. A= everything on the site is left align, making it look more organized. P= Groups are all linked together
  •
The website does in fact follow the CRAP principles to a T. A very good reason for this is that there is a huge team of web designers working for yahoo, thus leading to an excellent website.
  •
i love yahoo's webpage and i think that it follows CRAP very well. this page is one that im on often and its so simple not to clutered and easy to find what i need:) i think this is a great pick.
  •
yes, Yahoo does following the principles quite well. i tend to favor a more simplistic design and so for news/browser sites, I would actually prefer www.msn.com It seems to be the same type of content but set up in a way that is a little bit easier for the eye to read. Maybe because it is right-aligned and not left like so many other sites?

Although small, the bright yellow of the logo makes it stand out, giving it a high visual hierarchy

the more muted yellow shows that while it is not as important as the name of the company, it is still high on the visual hierarcy

The bold white borders draw your attention down giving you the 3rd place of viusal hierarchy.
