D #7 HW #6 Copyright: examples and explanations - 0 views

  •
Includes a "Categories of Works" section discussion the types of works covered by copyright, such as literary works, musical and dramatic works, pantomimes and choreography, pictorial and graphic works, sculptures, films and other audiovisual works, sound recordings, and finally architectural works. Copyrighted works can fall into more than one category (a play is both a literary and dramatic work, for example) and the list is not exhaustive. A work that doesn't seem to fit into any of these categories could still be covered by copyright if it is "an original work of authorship." The chapter then covers each category in more detail. Literature, for example, is defined not just as novels and plays but also movie scripts, letters, email messages, blogs, computer programs, and even souvenir T-shirt messages. It also doesn't have to be tangible; a short story doesn't need to be published in physical format to be copyrighted.

D#4 HW#1-Website Recommendation - 0 views

  •
This website has all the information about creating a great website. It goes through each step with detail and an example. It states that first a designer should use an effective marketing model in order to get attention from the audience, then one should play with colors for their website. Once one plays with the colors and main idea, then one can focus on balance. It was very informative.

D#8 HW#3 Variability - 0 views

  •
I think this page does a good job of describing what Manovich meant by variability in new media. The last statement, "Consequently, new media position the audience as users; able to manipulate and customize the media's experience for themselves to a greater degree than any previous form." is an ideal way to describe this phenomenon. The user of new media plays a huge part in how the media being viewed plays out over time. Interactivity is the cornerstone of this variability principle and I can see it being extended in the future to accomadate our (the users) needs and wants in ever more changing ways.

D #4 HW #1 Asymmetrical balance in web design - 0 views

  •
This webpage explores asymmetry in web design. The author mentions that many websites use the technique of balancing a large image on one side with text on the other. He talks about how an image can be directly tied with the text, such as an example of a product, or it could be more decorative in that it plays off an idea presented by the site but doesn't necessarily reflect the product or service. This site also explores the use of backgrounds and how to perhaps make a common two-column design more unique.

D #8 HW #1 Groupthink - 0 views

  •
This website offers more information on the phenomenon of "Groupthink," how to spot it, and how to avoid it. This is mainly intended for the workplace, but a lot of it is relevant for school groups, too. The term "Groupthink" was coined by Irving Janis, who pointed out that Groupthink occurs when there is one strong, persuasive group leader, a high level of group cohesion, and intense pressure from an outside source to make a good decision. This site suggests that when a group is in the decision-making process, in order to avoid Groupthink, they should make a point to explore objectives and alternatives, as well as to encourage members to challenge each others' ideas. The "Team Writing" text mentioned using brainstorming as a tactic, in which ideas are allowed to flow freely without any form of evaluation from the group. This site mentions such a tactic, as well as spreading out contribution to include everyone and giving each member a different perspective so that someone will always be playing the "Devil's Advocate."

This is actually kind of a summary of the concepts of the Remediation book. This is helpful because you can get a quick grasp of what the book is talking about in a few short paragraphs summarizing the ideas.

This link is to an analysis of Bolter, Jay David, and Richard Grusin. Remediation: Understanding New Media. The MIT Press, 2000. By Time Barrow. It is interesting how the blogger touches on the principles of Transparent Immediacy and Hypermedia. He discusses how the online video conversation (OVC), acts like earlier media in that it makes its presence known to the user by hyper-mediation. Though this type of video does include a face to face view of a recorded person, it separates itself from video conferencing and Skype by allowing the user to pause and ponder responses, respond at request, and post re-recorded responses live. Technologies like this have a huge potential in distance learning with online classes. Imagine your instructors recording their lectures with every view having a front seat in the class. Combine this with the ability to pause the lecture to reflect on information and develop scenarios for different problems that are presented. All while having the ability to ask any question about info covered and re watching any portion of video until clearly understood.

This websites explains what each of the items means and what roles they play in new media. it also goes on to talk about where these items come into play in everyday things that we use like skype and so on.

D#11 HW# 3.1: A Review of _Remediation - 0 views

    • Alex Portela

In all honesty this course has introduced very unfamiliar terms. This site give a cited explanation of the definitions. A good example of hypermediacy was given through Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho how we see Norman's acts then Hitchcock puts us through Norman's eyes and its a question of how we react to that emotionally and mentally as viewers.
  • Remediation is the process whereby computer graphics, virtual reality, and the WWW define themselves by borrowing from and refashioning media such as painting, photography, television, and film. It is the anxiety of influence acted out in the poetics of technology
  • Immediacy is the perfection, or erasure, of the gap between signifier and signified, such that a representation is perceived to be the thing itself.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Hypermediacy is a "style of visual representation whose goal is to remind the viewer of the medium" (Bolter and Grusin 272). Hypermediacy plays upon the desire for immediacy and transparent immediacy, making us hyper-conscious of our act of seeing (or gazing).
  • Mediation is the representation of an object, a formative interface whereby the object of contemplation is structured and presented by some intervening medium (my definition). In this sense, it refers to the symbolic act itself and thus would include writing.

D#8HW#2:Guide for Working in Teams - 0 views

  • This may sound elementary, but many teams screw this up. One thing you will eventually learn is that team members have very different abilities, motivations and personalities. For example, there will be some team members that are totally involved, and others that just want to disappear. If you let people disappear, they become dead weight and a source of resentment and frustration. You must not let this happen!
  • One of the first things you should do as a group is make sure everybody knows everybody's name. Don't just introduce yourselves once because some people will immediately forget the names or never quite hear them the first time. So make sure that everyone has written down everybody's name. Then go on to talk about each other -- what major, where you live on campus, who you know, etc.
  • If the word "vision" makes you want to puke, think instead "what are we really trying to accomplish? Besides the explicit tasks, what are our real goals?". For example, for a class team, does the team want to do whatever it takes to get an A? Or is having a comfortable workload more important? Does the team want to really get involved with each other socially, or keep interactions to just what's required to do the work? Does the team want an atmosphere of military efficiency, or do they want to horse around and have a good time?
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • So you should designate someone to play that role. However, you don't need to make the leader omnipotent.
  • Meetings can be useless if not done right. One simple thing that helps a lot is having an agenda. Having a written agenda makes it easier for the facilitator to steer things back to the task.

I found this to be a very interesting read that contrasts transnational comunicaions.
  •
The reason I liked reading about this resource is that it is relateable to us and shows a direct connection to the concept about transnational communication. This study was about looking how Arab's of middle eastern descent have settled in a large area around Detroit now sit maintain and create connections with their families, heritage, and friends located half the world away. To me this shows a real world application of how this happens and the essay goes on to look at several parts of the communities and how age and technology play roles into this equation as well. While it does not really go into some of the definitions of the textbook I think it is more important with its actually occurrence and discovering what, how, why, and when it is happening in society.
  •
I like that this article discusses the grow populations of Arab groups, especially in the Detroit area, and how we need to get a better understanding between the two cultures.
