Assessment of upper limb in tetraplegia: Considerations in evaluation and outcomes rese... - 0 views

  •
This purpose of this study was to discuss the different measurement tools available for evaluating the upper limb of persons with tetrapelgia and if they are accurate. Findings show that the grasp and release test is recommended for clinical trials involving persons in the chronic stages of SCI. While muscle strength testing and electrodiagnostics can be useful measures in acute clinical trials and outcomes studies, standardized measures of hand function are difficulty because they require a sitting balance and endurance tat many people with acute tetraplegia simply do not have. Overall, the study found that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to determine the best assessment tool for upper limb function in SCI.

Matching Supervision to the Student - 1 views

  •
In the role of fieldwork educator, it is essential to match a student's desired learning and skill development expectations with the student's capabilities. A professional development model, Situational Leadership (SL), is often utilized to assist the student's supervision by effectively matching the learning task to the student's capabilities. The SL model believes that supervising a student requires the ability to balance the demands of the situation with the motivation and skills of the student in order to maximize learning and support the desired performance outcomes. In order to be a successful clinical instructor, one must not be consistent in their supervising style, but rather be versatile and responsive to the learning in all situations.

Ethical Dilemmas in OT Practice: What Would You Do? - 0 views

  •
This brief article discusses the topic of ethical dilemmas in occupational therapy practice. I truly feel that this topic is prevalent to us as we feel the added pressures of maintaining high productivity and balancing such demands with adequate and appropriate patient care.
  •
The anonymous OT website is a great place to learn various treatment ideas, how to make things, and read thoughts from other practicing clinicians. In addition, in 2013 the OT posted various ethical dilemmas that are encountered in various settings on a daily basis. The OT not only provided the various scenarios, but also reasons why these incidences occur although she knows each is unethical. There is a scenario that discusses fieldwork students as well. I know I have seen or heard of several of these occurring while on my level 1 and level 2 rotations. Have you?

The brief cognitive assessment tool (BCAT): cross-validation in a community dwelling ol... - 1 views

  •
Cognitive impairment is under-recognized and misdiagnosed among community-dwelling older adults. At present, there is no consensus about which cognitive screening tool represents the 'gold standard.' However, one tool that shows promise is the Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool (BCAT), which was originally validated in an assisted living sample and contains a multi-level memory component (e.g. word lists and story recall items) and complex executive functions features (e.g. judgment, set-shifting, and problem-solving). 75 community dwelling adults took the assessment and the MoCA with a cut off score of <26. A cut off score for the BCAT was 45 after utilizing the results of the study to balance sensitivity and specificity at .81 and .8 respectively. In addition scores can be separated to interpret BCAT memory and executive dysfunction component scores.
