Systematic Review of the Effects of Exercise on Activities of Daily Living in People Wi... - 0 views

  •
This is a systematic review that looks at the evidence for the effects of exercise on ADL functioning of people with AD. This review also looked at the effects of exercise on cognition and mood and on physical performance. The initial search for articles for the systematic review began with over 2000 articles, and the reviewers narrowed it down to 6 articles. Overall, they found that exercise can, in fact improve ADL function in people with AD. Exercise can also improve physical performance, and may slow the decline in cognition and boost mood in those with AD.

This article used 6 other articles to review effects of exercise on ADL performance of those with Alzheimer's Disease. Occupational therapy intervention that includes aerobic and strengthening exercises may help improve independence in ADLs and improve physical performance in people with Alzheimer's. More research needs to done to identify specific components of intervention and optimal dosage to develop clinical guidelines. At my SNF placement, I have worked with many residents with Alzheimer's. We do use strength training with most patients is they are able to do it, and we also work to increase endurance as well. It is good to see evidence to back up treatment

Play Deprivation in Children With Physical Disabilities: The Role of the Occupational T... - 0 views

  •
Self-initiation, exploration, and free play are vital parts of growing up and learning for children. Children with physical disabilities may be deprived of normal play opportunities and hindered during this vital part of growing up. This can lead to disturbances in psychosocial health in children, also known as a second disability that decreases potential for independent behavior and performance. This interesting article describes the important role that occupational therapists have to increase independence and opportunities for children with physical disabilities. OT practitioners should consider a variety of factors when addressing needs of these children to influence play activities. These include considering the uniqueness of each child, understanding their capabilities, positively influencing parent-child and peer relationships, considering role of other caregivers, adapting toys and materials, and modifying the environment or the setting to promote success and play situations.

Alberta College of Occupational Therapists. (2009). The role of occupational therapy in psychosocial interventions.1-6 This is a helpful resource created by the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists to help explain the role of occupational therapy in psychosocial interventions. The resource states that psychosocial interventions are within the scope of practice for occupational therapists and it essentially lays out an in-depth explanation of psychosocial needs, interventions and how they are applied within occupational therapy. The resource defines psychosocial and makes recommendations for occupational therapists in their application of these types of interventions. There is a background provided as well as different assessment and intervention approaches that can be used in regard to psychosocial intervention. This area really focuses on the psychosocial needs of clients and how therapists can assist individuals to develop and maintain function where they need to. Intervention plans consider the demands of activities (cognitive, physical, functional or relational) and individuals' physical and emotional abilities to participate. The plans also reflect the individuals' personal needs and preferences, spirituality, cultural context, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and capabilities (emotional, affective, cognitive and physical).
