Dirette, Rozich, and Viau (2009) state that because the code of ethics in occupational therapy says that therapists have to provide services on the basis of accurate and current information, occupational therapists must be concerned about the evidence-based research literature. This article talks about the importance of conducting good research and producing accurate results. This article also talks about the need to conduct more level 1 research with strong evidence and using multiple well-designed randomized trials. In conclusion the article found that the research published in AJOT from 1995 to 2005 did not increase according to the levels of evidence needed to support evidence-based practice.

This blog discusses the importance of appropriate OT interventions in children and adolescents with psychosocial and mental health needs. The blog itself is by an OT who has experience of over 20 years in the field. The main point is that currently the profession does not have correct measures or appropriate and encompassing treatments for these children with conditions that only compound as they mature throughout school. The author argues that if we as a profession do not become more adept at this we will continue to provide ineffective treatment addressing the psychosocial needs of such a population. Also, the author points out that if the profession is unable to distinguish itself, we may be left out of this area of practice in the future. I found the point very interesting and definitely worth consideration even if one does not plan on practicing in a pediatric setting.

Alberta College of Occupational Therapists. (2009). The role of occupational therapy in psychosocial interventions.1-6 This is a helpful resource created by the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists to help explain the role of occupational therapy in psychosocial interventions. The resource states that psychosocial interventions are within the scope of practice for occupational therapists and it essentially lays out an in-depth explanation of psychosocial needs, interventions and how they are applied within occupational therapy. The resource defines psychosocial and makes recommendations for occupational therapists in their application of these types of interventions. There is a background provided as well as different assessment and intervention approaches that can be used in regard to psychosocial intervention. This area really focuses on the psychosocial needs of clients and how therapists can assist individuals to develop and maintain function where they need to. Intervention plans consider the demands of activities (cognitive, physical, functional or relational) and individuals' physical and emotional abilities to participate. The plans also reflect the individuals' personal needs and preferences, spirituality, cultural context, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and capabilities (emotional, affective, cognitive and physical).
