Clinical Reasoning: Early mobilization improves functional outcomes in critically ill ... - 5 views

  •
This article focuses on the importance of initiating therapy services, both OT and PT, early, to help increase independence at discharge. The study took place at 2 hospitals; subjects were patients who had been on a ventilator for less than 72 hours and were functionally independent prior to hospitalization. This study mentioned how important it is for early mobility to be provided to patients in the ICU. The authors concluded that therapeutic interventions provided during interruption of sedation, even PROM, helped the patients have shorter periods of delirium, less days on a ventilator during the follow-up period, and return to independent functional status after discharge.

Evidence for the Effectiveness of Different Service Delivery Models in Early Interventi... - 0 views

shared by cwaits23 on 17 Nov 14 - No Cached
  •
The authors of this systematic review sought to gather the available evidence base in order to determine best practice in terms of service delivery models and methods used in early intervention. The results of the initial search were categorized into one of 3 categories of service delivery: family centeredness, service setting, and type of parent participation. Through analysis of 18 articles, the authors determined that: parents' perceptions of efficacy and satisfaction increased when interventions were embedded in family routines and settings; these studies support the use of combined approaches across environments, though they did not specifically compare differences in outcomes in varying environments; and parenting classes were found to decrease stress, improve parents' relationships, as well as lead to improved cognitive scores in children when added to early intervention services. The implications of this review on OT practice support the continued use of family-centered approaches, individually tailored interventions, post-intervention assessments to determine effectiveness of interventions, and therapist feedback to increase outcomes.

Research Opportunities in the Area of Early Childhood: Birth Through 5 Years - 0 views

  •
This is another research opportunity for those of us who are interested in working with children: early childhood through 5 years. AOTA Evidence Based Project has developed a table outlining specific interventions and indicates either that the evidence is sufficient to support the intervention or that moderate, mixed, or few studies support the intervention and therefore it is a priority research area. This is a great resource for anyone interested in EBP in this area.

Profiles of cognitive subtest impairment in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in... - 1 views

  •
Performance on MoCA subtests was compared at these MMSE cutoffs to determine profiles of early cognitive difficulties. The MoCA detected cognitive impairment not detected by the MMSE in a high proportion of participants, and this impairment was evident across various subtests. The MoCA appears to be a sensitive screening test for detection of early cognitive impairment.

Evidence-Based Practice - AOTA - 0 views

OT should be science driven and therapists should be able to apply the most up to date evidence to their practice and treatment plans. This resource provided by AOTA helps to breakdown evidence supported interventions that have been shown to improve client outcomes in a variety of different settings/populations. Evidence supported ideas are provided for pediatrics, specifically early childhood, mental health, sensory integration and sensory processing. It is also provided for gerontology, rehabilitation and disability, adults with serious mental illness, and work. This is a good resource if you need a starting point for a treatment plan to give general ideas of EBP.
