Polytrauma is defined by the Department of Veterans Affairs as "two or more injuries to physical regions or organ systems, one of which may be life threatening, resulting in physical, cognitive, psychological, or psychosocial impairments and functional disability" (Poorman et al., 2009, p. 42). One of the patients on my caseload is a multiple trauma dx caused by falling over 12ft through a roof while at a job site. Polytrauma has the potential to cause psychosocial disturbances in patients due to their inability to participate in ADLs/IADLs that they were used to participating in, and also limitations in performance due to pain. Creating interventions that are related to the pt's plan of care will help to improve performance, but also setting up interventions that increase confidence and decrease stress will help psychosocially to prepare them for discharge.
